Serving Graduate Students At A Community College Library, Daniel K. Blewett
Serving Graduate Students At A Community College Library, Daniel K. Blewett
Journal of Graduate Librarianship
Even though a community college library rarely attempts to offer the same depth of support found at a university, it can still serve the needs of local graduate students in two ways: through the library’s core collection of print and electronic resources, and through its on-site services, spaces, and librarian expertise. Graduate students need to know that these resources are available to them. The knowledge and ability of the librarian is key to supporting this patron group. This article is informed by the author’s experiences at the College of DuPage, a large comprehensive community college in northeastern Illinois.

Works of the FIU Libraries
These guidelines are intended for library workers in reference and information services, in all types of libraries, who answer informational questions or conduct reference interviews. The goal of these guidelines is to support excellent, user-centered service. Some guidelines might not prove applicable in all contexts. Where that is the case, the goal should be to adapt these guidelines as appropriate to your environment.
A Body Without A Soul: Why Print Still Matters In Legal Research, Mari Cheney, Heather Simmons
A Body Without A Soul: Why Print Still Matters In Legal Research, Mari Cheney, Heather Simmons
Articles, Chapters and Online Publications
This article argues that print still has a place in legal research pedagogy and that some materials should still be collected in print in addition to online should the budget allow for it due to five primary reasons: (1) stability of legal information; (2) context; (3) information literacy; (4) algorithm bias; and (5) the discovery of information. Since many law library budgets are shrinking, there are creative ways for online legal publishers to make online material more print-like should libraries be unable to purchase both print and online material.
Engaging Antiracist Conversations: Foregrounding Twitter Feeds In Library Guides As A Way To Critically Promote Discussions Of Racial Justice, Anders Tobiason
Engaging Antiracist Conversations: Foregrounding Twitter Feeds In Library Guides As A Way To Critically Promote Discussions Of Racial Justice, Anders Tobiason
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
Academic librarians have often been hesitant to foreground real-time engagement with social justice in our public facing library guides. The guides, more often than not, serve merely to provide access points to “academic” materials and traditional news sources. Perhaps there is a different path. This chapter suggests that engagement with Twitter can point patrons toward the real conversations happening outside (and sometimes inside) academia that are missed when we rely on traditional sources. The critical engagement with social justice issues such as race and technology, or migrant justice, is happening right in front of our eyes on Twitter. This chapter …

Influence Of Reading Habit On Perception And Use Of Reference Sources By Postgraduate Students In The Faculty Of Education Of Ibadan, Nigeria, Sunday A. Oluwaniyi, Lawrence Akingbade
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
Libraries play a critical role in promoting reading habits. If postgraduate students cultivate the habits of reading, their perception and use of reference sources will be enhanced. The main objective is to determine the influence of reading habits on the perception and use of reference sources by postgraduates in the Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study and the study population consisted of 2503 postgraduate students of the Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, Stratified random sampling technique was used to select the sample size of 337 and tie questionnaire …
Composers' Collected Works: A Case Study In Remote Work Compatible Catalog Maintenance, David Floyd
Composers' Collected Works: A Case Study In Remote Work Compatible Catalog Maintenance, David Floyd
Library Scholarship
Approximately 15% of Binghamton University Libraries' 28,000 musical scores are collections of scores comprising a composer's complete works. Ideally, these large, multipart, non-circulating collections are cataloged consistently with either comprehensive records for each set, or individual records for each score within the set. Our catalog is inconsistent in this approach and requires remediation. The resulting workflow maximizes flexibility in who participates, where, and when, by siloing the portion of the work requiring data processing and advanced music cataloging skills. This poster will show both the workflow for standardizing composers' collected works sets, and how the project is designed for remote …

Ready For It? Training Library School Graduate Students To Provide Reference Services, Sandy Hervieux
Ready For It? Training Library School Graduate Students To Provide Reference Services, Sandy Hervieux
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
While Master of Library and Information Science programs provide students with a space to explore many theoretical subjects, few opportunities for practical experience are offered. At a large research university in Canada, the Library has created a program to hire graduate students in Library and Information Science and train them to provide reference services. Students receive training on the reference interview, subject-specific tools, the virtual reference platform, and are expected to complete several hours of shadowing with experienced librarians. The program presents a unique occasion for students to not only receive formal training but to also benefit from informal mentorship …
Review Of Deconstructing Service In Libraries: Intersections Of Identities And Expectations, Emily Komornik
Review Of Deconstructing Service In Libraries: Intersections Of Identities And Expectations, Emily Komornik
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
In Deconstructing Service in Libraries: Intersections of Identities and Expectations, Veronica Arellano Douglas and Joanna Gadsby bring together nineteen essays from the perspectives of library workers of differing race, ethnicity, gender identity, and job title to discuss service and what it means in their respective roles. Arellano Douglas and Gadsby’s edited volume offers essays that highlight the frustration of librarians who feel underappreciated, undervalued, and, perhaps most importantly, underestimated in their professional spaces. Within Deconstructing Service in Libraries, Arellano Douglas and Gadsby collect insightful, real-world examples of library professionals tackling these issues, offering solidarity alongside valuable professional advice. This book …
Soaring Into The Future Of Chat Reference: Assessing For Quality In Cooperative Chat Reference, Elise Ferer
Soaring Into The Future Of Chat Reference: Assessing For Quality In Cooperative Chat Reference, Elise Ferer
Library Scholarship
Online reference allows for libraries to join cooperatives to provide chat reference when local librarians are not available, far extending the hours assistance is available to patrons. As the future brings more cross institutional collaboration, how do we know that cooperative chat is effective for our patrons? Librarians at one institution worked to develop a rubric to assess chat transcripts for the quality of services provided. Over one academic term, these librarians assessed chat transcripts answered by academic librarians from other libraries. This poster will share the rubric used to assess transcripts, research methods, and initial findings from collected data.

Material Format Preference Of Music Faculty At Kennesaw State University, A. Carey Huddlestun
Material Format Preference Of Music Faculty At Kennesaw State University, A. Carey Huddlestun
Faculty and Research Publications
Historically, collection development has focused on what material to purchase. However, with the maturation of web-based music audio databases, web-based video databases, online music scores, electronic books and reference material, and commercial audio/visual streaming services, the format of material is also now an important collection consideration. Faced with difficult collection development decisions due to the Performing Arts Library’s (PAL) limited space being filled beyond capacity with physical material, PAL librarians at Kennesaw State University (KSU) sought to discover the material and format preference of music faculty. This was done to see if faculty would use digital material, requiring no physical …

The Librat Program At Cal Poly: Full Partners In Peer Learning, Brett B. Bodemer, Kaila Bussert
The Librat Program At Cal Poly: Full Partners In Peer Learning, Brett B. Bodemer, Kaila Bussert
Library Scholarship
The LibRAT Program at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo was first piloted in 2010. Although the program has expanded in scope and depth, the key to its continued success has been a commitment to core principles discovered during its initial launch. To this day, the LibRATs (Library Reference Assistance Technicians) form a small cadre of intensively trained students who are treated with respect as adults and as undergraduates. Communication, learning, and responsibility are multidirectional, and the LibRATs are full partners in the success of the program.
The original design of the program was to post students in …
Documentary Ghosts, Tim Gorichanaz
Documentary Ghosts, Tim Gorichanaz
Proceedings from the Document Academy
This paper explores how they documents provide evidence, particularly in anomalous cases, where the evidence is specious. I suggest that it is fruitful to consider such cases with the metaphor of ghosts, as ghosts suggest a breakdown in our everyday understandings of the link between life and death. I describe three types of ghosts and consequently three types of documentary ghosts. Documentary Ghost 1 is a document whose object no longer exists; Documentary Ghost 2 is a document that seems to evince one object, but upon scrutiny it evinces something else; and Documentary Ghost 3 is a document that seems …
