The Anchor: 2017

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

This paper reports information literacy needs, search and evaluation competencies at Mother Teresa Women’s University and its affiliated colleges. In this study it is try to evaluate the information literacy needs, information needs assessment competency and competency of information literacy evaluation. Questionnaire was a data collection tool. A total of 290 questionnaires were distributed among users and 254 duly filled in questionnaires were received, thus resulting into a response rate of 87.59 per cent. Out of 12 institutions, 5 are government, 5 are self-financing and 2 are aided educational institutions. This study showed that 163 (64.2%) respondents are assistant professors …

Background: Nurses engaged in evidence-based practice (EBP) have two important sets of tools: Critical appraisal tools and reporting guidelines. Critical appraisal tools facilitate the appraisal process and guide a consumer of evidence through an objective, analytical, evaluation process. Reporting guidelines, checklists of items that should be included in a publication or report, ensure that the project or guidelines are reported on with clarity, completeness, and transparency. The vast majority of the literature on citation management software focuses on making comparisons and providing recommendations. Even articles that go beyond Consumer Reports-style product reviews lack any critical analysis of the relationships between libraries and the vendors who design and sell citation management tools. Librarians communicate with these vendors in order to get technical assistance, report bugs, provide feedback on the product, and make feature requests. In this context, the relationship between librarian and vendor is that of customer and merchant. Computer-based scaffolding provides temporary support that enables students to participate in and become more proficient at complex skills like problem solving, argumentation, and evaluation. While meta-analyses have addressed between-subject differences on cognitive outcomes resulting from scaffolding, none has addressed within-subject gains. This leaves much quantitative scaffolding literature not covered by existing meta-analyses. To address this gap, this study used Bayesian network meta-analysis to synthesize within-subjects (pre–post) differences resulting from scaffolding in 56 studies. We generated the posterior distribution using 20,000 Markov Chain Monte Carlo samples. Among the most anticipated data releases of the Philippine statistical system is the quarterly real gross domestic product. This all-important variable provides the basis for deriving the economic growth performance of the country on a year-on-year basis. Official publication of this statistics, however, comes at a significant delay of up to two months, upsetting the planning function of various economic stakeholders. Under this backdrop, data scientists coined the term “nowcasting,” which refers to the prediction of the present, the very near future, and the very recent past, based on information provided by available data that are sampled at higher frequencies …

Use of research synthesis methods has contributed to changes in research practices. In disciplinary literatures, authors indicate motivations to use the methods include needs to (a) translate research-based knowledge to inform practice and policy decisions, and (b) integrate relatively large and diverse knowledge bases to increase the generality of results and yield novel insights or explanations. This review presents two histories of the diffusion of research synthesis methods: a narrative history based primarily in the health and social sciences; and a bibliometric overview across science broadly. Objective – This article describes a mixed methods usability study of research guides created using the LibGuides 2.0 platform conducted in 2016 at an urban, public university library. The goal of the study was to translate user design and learning modality preferences into executable design principles, and ultimately to improve the design and usage of LibGuides at the New York City College of Technology Library.

When a position for Interlibrary Loan Librarian came open at Georgia Southern University in the latter part of 2015, I was intrigued. Although ensconced happily in a public library position and a 10-year veteran of public systems, the lure of an academic position-along with logistical considerations-prompted me to apply for the position. I believe my observations about the hiring, though anecdotal, begin to unravel a conversation comparing and contrasting academic libraries with public libraries, possibly to the benefit of both institutions.

The rising cost of higher education is about more than tuition—expensive textbooks and course materials remain a looming barrier to college affordability and access. Open educational resources (OER) are a solution to high-cost materials and state legislators are starting to take notice. Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials that can be freely used, downloaded and shared to better serve all students. OER include all kinds of content such as textbooks, lesson plans, assignments, games, and more, and can include printed materials, not just digital materials. This report, which updates and expands on a report prepared by Law Library staff in March 2015, contains data on 131 countries, indicating whether or not published books are subject to a mandatory deposit requirement at the national level and, if so, how many copies are required, where they must be deposited, and whether the deposit is part of the copyright system. Citations to the controlling legislation for mandatory deposits are provided. In all but thirteen of the jurisdictions surveyed, deposits are required. For some of these thirteen jurisdictions, deposits are voluntary, while in others, no information regarding deposit …

Background: Simulations can be an active and engaging way for students to learn about natural selection, and many have been developed, including both physical and virtual simulations. In this study we assessed the student experience of, and learning from, two natural selection simulations, one physical and one virtual, in a large enrollment introductory biology lab course. We assigned students to treatments (the physical or virtual simulation activity) by section and assessed their understanding of natural selection using a multiple-choice pre-/post-test and short-answer responses on a post-lab assignment.
