Libraries' and Librarians' Publications
This book review was originally published in the Guild of Book Workers' Newsletter, Vol 181, December, 2008. "The Changing Book: Transitions in Design Production, and Preservation publishes the proceedings of the conference of the same name organized by and held at the University of Iowa July 22-25,2005. This conference tied together many threads, from an exhibition honoring the life's work of William (Bill) Anthony, the first conservator at the University of Iowa and teacher to some of today's best, to a "tent show" which gave the public the opportunity to learn about the book arts hands-on, to 19 formal presentations …

Electronic Journals And Changes In Scholarly Article Seeking And Reading Patterns, Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
A recent article by James Evans in Science (Evans 2008) is being widely discussed in the science and publishing communities. Evans' in-depth research on citations in over 34 million articles and how online availability affects citing patterns, found that the more issues of a journal that are available online, the fewer numbers of articles in that journal are cited. If the journal is available for free online, it is cited even less. Evans attributes this phenomenon to more searching and less browsing (which he feels eliminates marginally relevant articles that may have been found by browsing) and the ability …

Objective
A continual problem confronting the implementation of standardized vocabularies such as SNOMED CT is that their expressive flexibility and power provide more than one way to represent a given concept. The goal of this study was to investigate how the CliniClue™ Expression Transformer tool could be used to help in discerning similarities and differences among three separate sets of clinical research concepts coded in SNOMED CT by three different paid expert coding companies.
Methods
Initial editing of the companies’ coded datasets was required to enable accurate input into CliniClue Version: 2006.2.0030 Expression Transformer tool. The normal forms of the …

Publications and Research
Access to published information is of interest to many users. Library and information science (LIS) professionals are especially interested in gaining access and guiding users to all available information. Though they are often dependent on traditional subscription-based library resources, moving away from the costly ones and replacing them with usage of available open access sources, presents practitioners with a significant budget consideration in today's shrinking economy. This paper examines the availability of current LIS open access e-journals; their presence in well- and less-well known abstracting and indexing sources, their inclusion in standard library bibliographic tools as well as coverage by …

Music Librarian As Development Officer: Raising Funds For Special Collections, Ashlie K. Conway
Faculty and Staff Publications
Over the past ten years, advances in technology have led to increased productivity and efficiency in nearly every area of librarianship. As a result, many music libraries across the United States are either beginning a special collections program or are turning to these collections for digitization; as special collections often consist of older materials no longer under copyright, they become priorities for digitization, which also affords a critical preservation benefit. As these collections grow, so does the need for funding, which is essential to their proper archival storage and long-term preservation. A review of the literature finds that little research …

Community, Collaboration, And The Cowboy Cha-Cha: An Interview With Ala President-Elect Camila Alire, Julie Miller
Scholarship and Professional Work
ALA President-elect Camila Alire was the keynote speaker at the WALE 2008 annual conference in Olympia, WA. I first met Camila several years ago when she was Dean of Libraries at the University of New Mexico. When I heard she was coming to the WALE conference, I e-mailed to ask if she was willing to be interviewed for Alki. She graciously agreed.

Bibliolinking: An Adaptation Of Bibliotherapy For University Students In Transition, K. M. Becker, D. Pehrsson, P. S. Mcmillen
Library Faculty Publications
A team composed of one student and two faculty members worked in concert to develop and evaluate a training model for personnel who work with university students in transition. This model utilizes “Bibliolinking” (a newly coined word developed during this research) which is an adaptation of bibliotherapy. The primary purpose for using Bibliolinking is to establish and nourish relationships among Resident Assistants (RAs) and student residents (SRs) via a shared experience with a text such as a novel, short story, article or self-help book. Although, RAs play an important, often counselor-like role, they receive no or little formal preparation for …

Online access to historic maps, enhanced by JPEG2000 format and, in some cases, Google Maps, has proved popular with scholars, students, community members, and librarians. This article will discuss the planning, scanning, metadata creation, and Google mapping of the University of Louisville's Kentucky Maps Collection (http://digital.library.louisville.edu/cdm/landingpage/collection/maps/).

Faculty Opinion As Collection Evaluation Method: A Case Study Of Redeemer's University Library, Osagie Oseghale
Faculty Opinion As Collection Evaluation Method: A Case Study Of Redeemer's University Library, Osagie Oseghale
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Library users judge the quality of a collection by the extent to which it can meet their teaching, learning, and research requirements. University faculty must have a library collection that meets their curricular and accreditation needs. A questionnaire was used to collect data from 70 academic staff who participated in the study. Findings revealed that most respondents find useful material in the library occasionally, but that the collection needs to be strengthened in particular subject areas and in print serials. Faculty judgments about the library might become even more critical in an environment where they do not have any means …

Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Dissertation Citations In Organismal Biology At Southern Illinois University At Carbondale: Implications For Collection Development, Jonathan Nabe, Andrea Imre
Articles
We report on a citation analysis of PhD dissertations in Plant Biology and Zoology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, undertaken to test the common assumption that scientists favor current research to such an extent that journal backfiles can be de-emphasized in academic library collections. Results demonstrate otherwise. The study is reproducible for any institution, and can help to evaluate 1) the value of electronic journal backfiles and 2) the need to maintain print backfiles.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Conference Presentations and Speeches
During its 3 years of operations, the institutional repository at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln has gathered and posted over 19,000 documents, which, together with its hosted ETD collection, make it the country’s 3rd largest IR. Usage records also indicate it is one of the busiest, as well, furnishing almost 120,000 downloads during the most recent month (October 2008).
The IR has also become the cornerstone for a bundle of electronic publishing services developed and provided by the UNL Libraries. Indeed, these services may be seen as the enablers or preconditions of the IR’s successful track record.
