Speleology is an intrinsically multidisciplinary field of study that draws upon a substantial grey literature (for exapmle, agency research reports) that is poorly indexed, difficult to access, and generated in many different languages. The creation and implementation of the Karst Information Portal (KIP) beginning in 2005 addresses these and other information access and management problems by focusing on providing a global portal that will provide a gateway to the Web for karst information and services. Digital versions of many karst resources will be available through KIP. Databases, datasets, bibliographies, images, grey literature, and the like. that have been created by …

Data access, management, and evaluation challenge the progress of speleology. Crucial information is both scattered throughout specialty mainstream journals and buried in the gray literature. The karst-information problem is exacerbated in paleontological speleology due to overlaps into other disciplines, such as geology, biology, paleoclimatology, and hydrology. Important patterns and relationships can easily be overlooked, especially when no geographic or cultural connections are known between archeological sites. The Karst Information Portal (KIP) is a solution to these paleontological research problems. Conceived in 2005 and launched in June 2007, KIP developed as a partnership between the International Union of Speleology, National Cave …

The difficulty of sharing geologic and geographic karst information is well documented. While there is a significant body of internationally accessible literature, important works are largely unknown or inaccessible. Some of the more difficult documents to access include maps, databases, technical reports, graduate theses or dissertations, images, video, and government publications. Also, karst related documents published in lessaccessible languages are hard to access or find—especially those published prior to the information age. In order to address this issue, the Karst Information Portal (KIP) was formed in 2005 and launched in 2007.
KIP is an evolving international community of scientists, information …

From the mid-1970s through the mid-1990s, the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library maintained a vertical file of reports and market surveys conducted by the St. Petersburg Times. Located in the Business Reference area, these materials offered a portrait of life along the Suncoast that combined data available from other sources (such as the United States Census) with surveys, in-house research, and other statistical information gathered by the newspaper. The various reports and profiles residing in this collection offer an excellent account of commercial, demographic, media-related, and transportation trends in the Tampa Bay region. Some data sets examined individual municipalities or counties, …

The library received a donation of nearly a dozen scrapbooks from the Pasco-Hernando Community College library in New Port Richey. These materials document the life of Glen Dill, a popular radio personality, local historian, and newspaper columnist. Dill (1910-1993) was the first voice many radio listeners heard in the morning when they tuned into WTSP-AM, a St. Petersburg radio station, from 1942 until 1957. Dill later worked as a disc-jockey and general manager at other local radio stations, including WILZ and WGUL. He also wrote more than one thousand newspaper columns for the Suncoast News and other papers, most with …

This collection consists of letters and documents related to the Snell/Barnard land transaction in 1913. Snell became a prominent developer of North Shore, the Old Northeast, and Snell Isle. Snell acquired tracts of land between 26th Avenue North and 30th Avenue North, east of First Street North to Coffee Pot Bayou from the Erastus A. Barnard family of Chicago. Although documents in this collection have inclusive dates from 1898 through 1951, most of the materials relate to the 1913 land sale. These materials were acquired by purchase through the Society for Advancement of Poynter Library.

Wanita M. Scroggs, an attorney admitted to the Florida Bar and librarian at Stetson University College of Law, donated this book of writs of capias (book of arrest warrants) to the Poynter Library. Many of the warrants were issued for courts in Jacksonville and Ocala in the early 1890s. Among the witnesses and issuers of warrants was E[verett] E. Johns, who later perished in the line of duty on December 6, 1905 from a gunshot wound near Fernandina while serving as a chief deputy in Nassau County. Johns had previously served as sheriff of Bradford County. His sons—Everett Markley and …

In October 2003, Paula Thomas Baker donated an original 17 January 1884 edition of the St. John Globe. This broadside newspaper--with a Mark Twain passage on the front page--offers an excellent example of nineteenth century newspaper design in Canada. The donor’s spouse, M. E. “Buddy” Baker, formerly worked in the Media Relations office at USF St. Petersburg.

A former resident of the Fountain Inn—a retirement facility once adjacent to the Poynter Library that was demolished in February 2004—Betty Morris acquired a small scrapbook of clippings from a World’s Fair in the 1890s and various materials describing transportation issues in central Florida in the mid-twentieth century. The scrapbook contains clippings and hand-copied poetry, prayers, and letters collected by Ms. Morris's mother, Gussie Palmer Morris (nee Colcock), who was the granddaughter of Benjamin Morgan Palmer, a well-known Louisiana preacher from the Civil War and Reconstruction years.

A native of Lawrence, Kansas, Jones (1909-1990) moved to Kansas City, Missouri, as a young child, where he attended Lincoln High School and Lincoln Junior College. After living in nearly forty different U.S. cities, he moved to Tampa in 1950. He later settled in St. Petersburg in 1955, where he lived until his death. A photographer, publicist, and journalist, Mr. Jones worked as Florida editor for the Pittsburgh Courier and edited the African American pages of the St. Petersburg Times and St. Petersburg Evening Independent. For almost twenty years, beginning in 1956, he contributed a column entitled “Let's Talk Politics” …

Joane Miller, a resident of Redington Beach and widow of Parker E. Miller, donated the materials in this collection in two separate accessions. In early 1999, the library received a single bound notebook with individual documents signed by the first thirty-two Presidents of the United States (George Washington through Harry S. Truman). A subsequent accession in August 2000 included a collection of commemorative coins from the Franklin Mint that celebrates notable events in American history. Parker Everard Miller’s family maintained homes in Ohio and Florida. During the 1920s, members of the family often spent their winter months in St. Petersburg. …

The Impact Of Grey Literature In Advancing Global Karst Research: An Information Needs Assessment For A Globally Distributed Interdisciplinary Community, Todd A. Chavez, Anna H. Perrault, Pete Reehling, Courtney Crummett
Anna H. Perrault
A survey of the global karst community was conducted in 2006. The survey was distributed via the World Wide Web to known karst researchers. The instrument was designed to generate an initial inventory of core grey information types, to assess levels of usage of grey information by the respondents, and to gauge the karst community’s willingness to participate in building and expanding both this collection and the associated controlled vocabularies.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effective behaviors of reference librarians during the chat reference interview, with particular emphasis given to whether the service users would feel more satisfied when librarians adopt the behaviors recommended in the revised “RUSA Guidelines for Behavioral Performance of Reference and Information Services Providers.” The data analyzed for this study consisted of 422 chat reference transaction transcripts and corresponding user surveys obtained from a public library system that participated in a nationwide chat reference consortium. In six of the ten behavioral types observed, the users perceived the service as more satisfying when …
