Library Reports and Communication
Racism and white supremacy culture have a profound impact on nonwhite faculty in higher education and throughout the tenure and promotion process. This document is intended to acknowledge the impact of racism on the tenure and promotion process in general as well as in our specific context of Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Libraries. It is not intended to be comprehensive of everyone’s lived experiences or of the effects of racism on all.

Thriving Through Human Centered Approaches To Change, Annie Bélanger, Megan Musolff
Presentations
Can you think of a time when you have thrived through change? What made that possible? How did the change effort center on organizational values and engage those impacted? Most traditional change management practices focus on process and implementation over listening, compassion, and healing. By using human-centered change leadership approaches, we will explore ways to align change efforts with organizational values. We will identify factors that can lead to a change that harness the strengths of the team, while also make space for voices to be heard. Together, participants will consider how the Bridges’ Transition Model enables effective and compassionate …

Through An Inequitable Collective Trauma Lens: Elevating Narratives On Mental Health And Covid-19, Juliana Espinosa, Sheila García Mazari, Samantha Minnis
Presentations
This panel session sought to elevate the voices of library professionals who had been impacted both personally and professionally by COVID-19. Speaking from their perspectives at different career points, the panelists shared their experiences, as well as how the pandemic has compounded for some, several pre-existing collective traumas. Panelists addressed the crisis narrative inherent in librarianship, and discussed how the profession can reframe its approach to inequitable trauma, unsustainable workloads, and other structural inequities. The handout provided lists the questions that panelists addressed, a resources list for further reading, and an accountability agreement for participants to engage with the space.

Making The Most Of An Adjunct Placement, Leah Morin, Austin Phillips, Jon Jeffryes
Presentations
This poster discusses approaches to ensure that adjunct placements leverage the temporary placement to the benefit of both adjunct librarians and institutions. Librarians can leverage short-term employment to develop skills and gain experience in new library environments. Libraries maintain services while seeking longterm solutions and progress on key projects leveraging skill areas supporting adjunct librarians’ professional development. Clear career goals, intentional supervision, and guidance on translating experience to future job applications can ground an adjunct appointment in mutually-beneficial principles.

Library Reports and Communication
This documents details the purpose, accountabilities, and timeline for IDEA 2.0, a group of university library staff who focus on active interrogation of existing policies and practices. The group works to ensure that the library’s policies and practices do not reinforce existing inequitable power structures with an early focus on white supremacy culture, but not to the exclusion of other inequities such as patriarchy, ableism, and others. IDEA 2.0 acts as a guiding body to establish best practices and mechanisms of accountability.

University Libraries Faculty Assembly Covid-19 Impact Statement, Emily Frigo, Leigh Rupinski, Sheila García Mazari, Jeffrey D. Daniels, Annie Bélanger
Library Reports and Communication
This University Libraries Faculty Assembly Covid-19 Impact Statement serves as documentation of changes that occurred across University Libraries and caused disparate, inequitable, impact to faculty throughout the pandemic, beginning in March 2020 and spanning into 2021. The document is necessarily limited in scope to assist faculty candidates in the tenure-track process and mitigate potential traumas as a result of the pandemic’s impact on that process. The structure of the tenure-track process is imperfect in nature, and this statement takes a trauma-informed, person-first, approach to investigating how to best support candidates in making their case for contract renewal, tenure, and/or promotion.
