Ithaka S+R’s Research Support Services Program investigates how the research support needs of scholars vary by discipline and includes reports on history, chemistry, art history, religious studies, agriculture, and public health. In 2017-2018, Ithaka S+R examined the changing research methods and practices of Asian studies scholars conducting research through U.S. institutions. This project was undertaken collaboratively with research teams at 11 academic libraries with the goal of identifying services to better support Asian studies scholars. This report aims to provide actionable findings for the organizations, institutions, and professionals who support the research process of Asian studies scholars. One hundred and …

University of the Pacific’s Stockton Campus Library is currently in the process of a multi-phase renovation that will offer 21st century design and functionality. Our team conducted several assessment methods to understand more fully how our students use –or choose not to use—study spaces and various pieces of furniture in the Stockton library. The results of this project will help answer the questions: “What do our students want or need in library learning spaces – both academic and social?” and “How might we create learning spaces in the library that will enable a variety of student use preferences?” We have …

The University of the Pacific started an institutional repository, Scholarly Commons, at the end of 2016. Prior to this, theses/dissertations (T/Ds) had been submitted to ProQuest starting in 1960 and prior to that the University collected print copies in the Library starting in 1912. The print collection of T/Ds at Pacific was 3,188 in December 2016.
The goals starting in 2017 were as follows
- Duplicate all current ProQuest ETDs in to the IR with restricted access
- Set up the ProQuest submission form moving forwards to gain permission from students to upload to the IR
- Digitize all print copies in …

Open Education (OE) Week offers a chance to get faculty and students engaged in what OE might mean for them in the classroom. In 2018 at University of the Pacific, we offered several types of programming during the week of March 5-9 geared towards both faculty and students. We'll share what succeeded and what fell flat along with recommendations for future OE Week events.

In today’s academic publishing environment, open access journals have become an increasingly common and used venue for publication by STEM faculty and researchers. Subject librarians at one of the largest public research institutions in the United States are tailoring workshops geared towards faculty to create awareness of predatory publishing. Our research question involved identifying STEM faculty at our institution who have published in questionable journals and bringing this to their attention through a series of faculty workshops.

"The seven-level Researcher Skill Development framework extends the RSD's original 5 levels of student autonomy to include the degree of autonomy required for a successful research career. It therefore addresses not only students, but also early, middle and late career researchers. This involves the extension of the same facets of inquiry that appear in the original RSD framework to include two higher levels: 6 and 7." -- https://www.adelaide.edu.au/rsd/framework/rsd7/

"Research Skill Development (RSD) is about making explicit and coherent in regular university coursework the incremental attainment of research skills in a specific discipline. In the RSD, there are six facets of the research process, identified from the literature and modified according to Bloom’s taxonomy and our experiences of using the framework in the disciplines. The meaning of ‘research’ in this context is: students actively finding information new to themselves. Underlying this notion is the ‘degree of knowness’ of knowledge: whether research involves …

Modern ILS's produce a wealth of data, that properly blended and analyzed, would add value to the Library mission. The challenge is that while Librarians have the data and understand the mission we lack the analytics tools and skillset necessary to extract actionable intelligence. It simply isn't one of our core competencies . Fortunately college campuses do have offices that have the tools and skillsets necessary to analyze our data; Institutional Research. This presentation will explore how the University at Buffalo Libraries partnered with its campus' Institutional Research office on an analytics initiative using their visualization platform: Tableau.

Libraries from multiple library sectors in Western New York have worked together to develop a regional collaborative “last copy” print repository – the Empire Shared Collection Repository (ESCR) – that provides continuing access to a shared collection of seldom-used serial-type materials. In this session, learn how the University at Buffalo, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, SUNY Buffalo State, and The College at Brockport have collaborated to develop the tools, standards, services, costs and policies that are needed to create and sustain a collaborative print repository.

Purpose – The purpose of this case study is to demonstrate a current model, as well as explore future models, for integrating institutional repositories (IRs) in higher education goals at the University of Toledo.
Design/methodology/approach – This is a case study that uses literature review as an exploratory framework for new approaches while reflecting on existing literature to present the current practical framework for using IRs.
Findings – The digital environment has pushed academic institutions toward new strategies for curating their record on scholarship and preserving their heritage collections, using their IRs. Innovative approaches are also vital to curating the …
