Development Of A Broader Conceptualization And Measurement Scale Of Ethical Leadership (Bels), Fahad Shakeel, Peter Mathieu Kruyen, Sandra Van Thiel Dec 2019

Development Of A Broader Conceptualization And Measurement Scale Of Ethical Leadership (Bels), Fahad Shakeel, Peter Mathieu Kruyen, Sandra Van Thiel

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This study presents a broader construct of ethical leadership as an alternative to existing understanding of the term. The study divides the existing literature into classical and contemporary thoughts. The study brings forth limitations of the existing classical conceptualization based on several shortcomings. Synthesis and development of existing studies lead to a broader narrative that essentially addresses the limitations posed in this study. This broader viewpoint is based on the categorization of ethical theories by Van Wart (2014). A new definition of ethical leadership is presented and a survey scale of ethical leadership based on this conceptualization is developed. This …

Ethical Leadership And Prohibitive Voice – The Role Of Leadership And Organisational Identification, Mari Svendsen, Ingvild Seljeseth, Kjell Ove Ernes

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This article extends previous research on ethical leadership and voice behavior, by investigating the relationship between ethical leadership and prohibitive voice. Prohibitive voice is defined as speaking up with concerns or worries regarding factors that may harm organisational functioning. The article reports on a cross- sectional study of Norwegian employees, investigating the relationship between ethical leadership, leadership identification, organisational identification and prohibitive voice. In the article leadership identification is understood as a process where the employee incorporates the leader’s values and goals into his or her self- concept. Organisational identification on the other hand is when the employee starts seeing …

What Do We Really Mean By Good Leadership?, Tom Karp Dec 2019

What Do We Really Mean By Good Leadership?, Tom Karp

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

The article discusses the concept of good leadership. According to classical philosophy, good leadership requires voluntary followership towards good goals. It is argued that leaders in any case are rarely able to independently practice good leadership because of all the barriers and restrictions, such as environmental, organizational and personal obstacles. People are fallible; so are leaders. Also, many people and leaders themselves have too high expectations of what leadership can achieve. The answer to the question of what constitutes good leadership is that leadership should be “good enough”, without leaders lowering the requirements of how they treat other people or …

Latinx Millennials Won’T Surrender To Tech-Industry Bias, Josefina F. Bruni Dec 2019

Latinx Millennials Won’T Surrender To Tech-Industry Bias, Josefina F. Bruni

Capstones

Organizations like Techqueria, which seek to improve the odds of Latinx in the tech labor market, have been popping up since 2014 among minorities and other marginalized social groups, with names like LGTBQ in Tech, Blacks in Technology, Latinas in Tech and Lesbians Who Tech. They’re free, fluid and informal, with members constantly exchanging information and support. While they offer many opportunities for face-to-face gatherings, they are powered by social media.

Some of these collective efforts are no more than Slack workspaces. Others cross multiple platforms or even have web pages. Some have even incorporated. But all …

What Is Social Justice To Me?, Michal Felan Dec 2019

What Is Social Justice To Me?, Michal Felan

Social Justice Class Papers

What is social justice? Okay, wow what a loaded question. I think that social justice can be a little different for everyone. It all depends on how you were raised and the people you are surrounded with. We as humans get a lot of our ideas from others, and we then form our own ideas based off those ideas. Social justice has many different meanings for me alone, much less the entire world. I think that there is an endless number of definitions. It is hard to know where to begin. I believe that social justice includes a wide variety …

Social Justice Explained, Hope White Dec 2019

Social Justice Explained, Hope White

Social Justice Class Papers

When one looks around and sees people sleeping on park benches, a family of five packed into a small run-down two-bedroom trailer, eviction notices on doors, and a smart young man sent to jail for selling drugs, he asks “where is justice?”. He might think this world is hopeless. While social injustice is prevalent, there are people working towards social justice by changing the broken systems within society. Social justice isn’t just an ideology like some people believe. It is a methodology. Social justice is changing the systems within society that lead us to devalue human beings.

Leading From The Field: Funded International Nongovernmental Organizations And The Participatory Development Of Long-Term Impact Assessments, Geary A. Cox Ii

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Leaders of international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) must contend with multiple accountability regimes while balancing responsibilities to stakeholders. While many accountability mechanisms are donor-led, this study sought to understand the capacity that NGOs have as agents of change to influence measurement and evaluations activities. The study focused on NGO applications submitted to a donor-government during competitive award announcements for conventional weapons destruction activities.

Using a parallel convergent mixed methods approach, this study examined the ways in which NGO leaders develop their organizations’ capacity to implement long-term impact assessments. A direct entry logistic regression of applications showed evidence of organizational characteristics influencing …

Personal Manifesto: A Need For Change, Emily Low Dec 2019

Personal Manifesto: A Need For Change, Emily Low

Social Justice Class Papers

The simple definition for social justice is “a concept of fair and just relations between the individual and society”. However, most people lack depth and true understanding about the social world and its ups and downs. Every society has a lower class as well as an upper class. No matter how well a society thrives, there is always going someone who isn’t caught up. It’s those who help the poor, the sick, and the ones who suffer injustice that shall be considered superheroes without capes. Personally, I strive to be in the criminal justice field for those who can’t defend …

What Is Social Justice?, Jeremy Boone Dec 2019

What Is Social Justice?, Jeremy Boone

Social Justice Class Papers

What is social justice is a very broad question to ask anybody, even a student in a social justice class. In my opinion, social justice has been the latest discussion in today’s society due to the crime rate, inequality in race and gender, and the hatred in the streets. Some people may consider that this is the main root of the definition of social justice. In my opinion, the definition of social justice is the foundation for a stable and safe community. It should reflect the characteristics of each person showing that a human has values that should be respected, …

Personal Credo: What Is Social Justice?, De'ja Smiley Dec 2019

Personal Credo: What Is Social Justice?, De'ja Smiley

Social Justice Class Papers

When I first thought of the definition of social justice, my initial thought was that there was no clear definition, but then I thought about the many things that the Bible says about justice. Deuteronomy 16:20 says, “Follow justice and justice alone, so that you may live and possess the land the Lord your God is giving you.” It also says in Psalms that the Lord is righteous and that he loves righteousness and justice (Psalms 11:7, 33:5. The verse that resonates with me most is Micah 6:8. It says, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And …

The Fight, Chloe Morse Dec 2019

The Fight, Chloe Morse

Social Justice Class Papers

For many, the word ‘justice’ brings up an image of a courtroom. A guilty man stands before a judge, ready to pay the price for his crimes and justice will occur when he receives his sentence. The term ‘social justice’, however, is more complicated. It goes beyond crime and punishment. Social justice is when the system works under the knowledge that all humans are created equally and should be treated thus. This involves allowing equal access to basic needs, opportunities, and resources to live and thrive. It condemns discrimination, prejudice, corruption, and extortion. Achieving social justice requires taking action.

Social Justice, Nathan Gray Dec 2019

Social Justice, Nathan Gray

Social Justice Class Papers

In today’s society, poverty, corruption, sex trafficking, and drug abuse are just a few of the social and political issues that ravage our world today. It is hard to tell if people really care about one another and if anyone believes the biblical commandment, “Love your neighbor as your self.” As discussed in Evicted, there are serious housing issues in America due to high poverty rates. In Far From the Tree, we learned about different social hurdles that children and their families have to overcome to survive; such as autism or dealing with a child prodigy. In Just …

Theatre As An Intervention For Empathy Development Among Undergraduate Students, Jonathan Stewart Dec 2019

Theatre As An Intervention For Empathy Development Among Undergraduate Students, Jonathan Stewart

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Empathy is the ability feel into, or put oneself in the place of another. It is the ability to walk in someone else’s shoes. Studies have shown that this ability is decreasing among today’s college students and on the rise as a desired trait for today’s leaders. This dilemma provides an interesting opportunity to explore how institutions of higher education can help develop the leaders of tomorrow by increasing empathy among students. Specifically, this research explores theatre as an intervention for empathy development among college students.

Theatre, as a program of study, is unique within the college experience in that …

Leadership Theories And United States Demographic Shifts: Responsiveness In The Workplace, Sherry H. Latten, Jonathan Perez Dec 2019

Leadership Theories And United States Demographic Shifts: Responsiveness In The Workplace, Sherry H. Latten, Jonathan Perez

Journal of Research Initiatives

As the United States becomes increasingly more diverse, it is imperative that organizations consider the implications of their leadership pipeline. Given the differences that can exist by social identity groups in experiences, values, interests, and communications, it raises a question about the responsiveness of current leadership theories to the changing demographics. This article explores the responsiveness of transformational leadership, authentic leadership, and leader-member exchange (LMX) theory to the demographic changes as a means of helping organizations consider how existing leadership norms and theories need to be expanded to encompass the future population of leaders across race, sex, and age.

Understanding Employee Engagement: A Mixed-Methods Study, Joren M. Scharn

Theses & Dissertations

For over 4 decades businesses around the world have been conducting employee satisfaction surveys at regular intervals and this surfaced a strong positive relationship between employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction, and overall company performance. In recent years however, academics and researchers have reopened the debate on whether employee or job satisfaction metrics are in fact reliable indicators of productivity, suggesting that employee engagement has a far stronger correlation to productivity. This study addresses two interrelated problems that are associated with a practice that is common in working environments all over the world. According to literature, it is generally accepted that (a) …

Social Justice Credo, Erica Wilmath Dec 2019

Social Justice Credo, Erica Wilmath

Social Justice Class Papers

There is this infamous question that has dangled over our heads for hundreds of years, starting back to B.C. The question is simple but complex at the same time, what is social justice, and how does it have anything to do with me? I myself have thought this question long before taking this course. I had no clue the impact injustice had on me nor the calling I had to make a difference.

Throughout our day to day lives, especially when we are younger, social justice or even justice alone isn't a part of our vocab or daily thoughts. It …
