An Evaluation Of An Upper-Division, General Education Information Literacy Program, Elizabeth S. Hopkins, Suzanne Julian
An Evaluation Of An Upper-Division, General Education Information Literacy Program, Elizabeth S. Hopkins, Suzanne Julian
Faculty Publications
The Advanced Writing library instruction program at Brigham Young University's Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL) is intended to teach junior-level students advanced information literacy and research skills. The university general education curriculum requires students to participate in the program as part of their Advanced Writing course. When anecdotal feedback from librarians and students identified problems with the program, the authors conducted a qualitative evaluation of the program in order to identify problems and possible solutions. The evaluation included a student survey and focus groups with students, librarians, and English faculty. This paper describes the HBLL Advanced Writing instruction program, identifies …

This paper provides a case study of the rural library programs sponsored by the Evergreen Education Foundation (EEF) and identifies the vital role of school libraries in improving local residents’ access to information and enriching their cultural life. It analyzes the data collected from user surveys of one high school library and one book station from two library clusters in underdeveloped rural Tianzhu and Tongwei counties in Gansu Province of western China to assess the impact and effectiveness of a schoollibrary- centered community information resource sharing model developed and implemented by China Evergreen Rural Library Service Stations (CERLS). A total …

Digital Citizenship: The Internet, Society, And Participation, Allegra Swift
Library Staff Publications and Research
Building on their prior research on public policy and the Internet, the authors of Digital Citizenship examine the impact of the Internet on economic opportunity, civic engagement, and political participation. Karen Mossberger, Caroline J. Tolbert, and Ramona S. McNeal define “digital citizens” as those who use the Internet daily and with skill. Analyzing data from Current Population Survey (CPS) and Pew Internet and American Life Project surveys, the authors find that Internet use is lowest in the section of society that would benefit most. The surveys analyzed are compiled of questions about location, education level, work, earnings, computers use, marital …

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)
Abstract
For the past decade the University Libraries at The University of Akron has been modifying and enhancing its services in response to changing technologies and user needs, as well as evolving campus strategies. Library efforts centered on service excellence and student success have played a leading role in the inclusion of a planned learning commons as one of the key strategic initiatives of the University. At this time the learning commons concept has been fully developed, while the proposed building renovation plan is underway. The Library, however, is utilizing key opportunities in the present to integrate learning commons functionality …
The Effectiveness Of Information Literacy Instruction At St. Cloud State University: A Lesson In Situated Cognition, Jennifer C. Hill
The Effectiveness Of Information Literacy Instruction At St. Cloud State University: A Lesson In Situated Cognition, Jennifer C. Hill
Culminating Projects in Information Media
In 2006 The Chronicle of Higher Education published an article describing a study completed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). ETS estimated that only 13% of incoming freshman students were information literate. Studies by Mittermeyer (2005), Wassman (2000), and the Intersegmenatl Committee of the Academic Senates of the California Community Colleges (2002) confirm this diagnosis. Information literacy speaks to the skills of finding, evaluating, and presenting information. Indeed, these skills are crucial in the information age. This paper sought to discover if the for-credit undergraduate information literacy courses (Information Media [IM] 104 and 204) at St. Cloud State University (SCSU) …

Sources On Lesbian Subjectivities For The Production Of Lesbian Of Color Identity Formation Through Literature, Art, Film, Or Documentation: An Annotatated Bibliography, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz
Publications and Research
Historically, coming out as a lesbian and then forming an identity of a "lesbian of color" includes seeking out like voices and stories. Librarians who hold an understanding of the lesbian of color coming out process as well as the fluidity of language in Queer Studies will be better equipped to service lesbian of color patrons. This paper holds three tools for reference librarians: A literature review outlining the history of lesbian of color identity formation, secondly, a bibliography with interdisciplinary humanities reference annotations that source lesbians of color in literature, film, performance art, and identity, and thirdly, a model …

Research Students In The Electronic Age: Impacts Of Changing Information Behavior On Information Literacy Needs, Kirsty Williamson, Vivienne Bernath, Steven Wright, Jen Sullivan
Communications in Information Literacy
Because of the rapid uptake of information and communication technology (ICT), understanding the ways in which information seeking has changed over the past decade is crucial to gaining a picture of how information literacy needs may also be changing in the electronic age. This qualitative research took an interpretivist/ constructivist approach in examining the ways in which access to electronic information-seeking affects the information literacy needs of 15 research students in an Australian university setting. An ethnographic technique, the interview, was used for the data collection. Three particular areas, related to information seeking and use, were selected: (1) information source …
