The Introduction Of Virtual Reality To Education: Should The Marketing Discipline Engage?, Enda Mcgovern
The Introduction Of Virtual Reality To Education: Should The Marketing Discipline Engage?, Enda Mcgovern
WCBT Faculty Publications
This position paper explores whether faculty should embrace the use of virtual reality as a medium of academic engagement with the future intake of digital native students. In recent years there has been a tremendous surge in the use of digital device platforms to extend the reach of education to the wider student populations. As a result, the positive engagement by students of multimedia objects, including video, sound clips and data in a more integrated, multi-sensory digital medium has gained significant traction in the learning environment. Students are moving faster into this digital space and it is not long before …
Use Of Academic Resources Among Different Socioeconomic Classes, Kristin Zimmerman
Use Of Academic Resources Among Different Socioeconomic Classes, Kristin Zimmerman
Sacred Heart University Scholar
Access to academic resources is influenced by socioeconomic status. Based on Bourdieu’s concept of economic and cultural capital and Lareau’s theory of social inequality, it is hypothesized that students from high socioeconomic status would access academic resources at a significantly higher rate. This hypothesis was evaluated in a survey of 120 college students. Basic hypothesis testing showed no significant differences. Advanced hypothesis testing, however, found a significant difference for males and undergraduate seniors. The results suggest a trend that students from lower socioeconomic families access academic resources at a higher rate than students from higher socioeconomic families. A more diverse …

Sacred Heart University (SHU) has launched a university-wide Open Educational Resources(OER) initiative with three goals in mind – reduce the cost of textbooks for students, increase access to course materials, and strengthen pedagogical effectiveness. SHU has made appreciable headway in the short span of one and a half years by formulating a vision, defining the goals, developing a plan of action, and implementing a pilot study to integrate open textbooks in two math courses. Although it is a nascent initiative, this presentation summarizing the lessons-learned will make a useful contribution to the OER academic discussion . The presentation will describe …

Visuality And The Difficult Differences In Networked Knowledge Communities, Anita August
Visuality And The Difficult Differences In Networked Knowledge Communities, Anita August
English Faculty Publications
This chapter argues that as Networked Knowledge Communities (NKCs) become increasingly the way knowledge is constructed, represented, and circulated, visuality in information-based societies is also being shaped, and shaped by, the interactive and collective ideologies of digital technology environments. Like the written text, which constructs and imposes hegemonic ideals of identity through discursive practices, visual representations of identities also serve as powerful discursive reservoirs of subordinating representations. By focusing on NKCs as an epistemic space that reflects, recirculates, and reacts to bodies of knowledge produced by the institutions of power in the larger social culture, this chapter examines the vulnerability …

Teaching The Catholic Intellectual Tradition Through An Experiential Learning Program, Susan T. Dinnocenti, Maria Lizano-Dimare, Khawaja Mamun, Rupendra Paliwal
WCBT Working Papers
A Catholic University has a specific mission of preserving, transmitting and developing the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. This paper proposes an experiential learning program to support this mission of the catholic universities. This program aims to provide integrated and practical learning of fundamental moral values of catholic intellectual tradition and issues related to social justice while developing the critical and analytical thinking through exposure to real world problems, their possible solutions and a personal reflection. In this paper, we use a microfinance program in an underdeveloped country as the premise for the experiential learning program specifically for business students. Moreover, the …
Getting Our Priorities Straight In Higher Education, John J. Petillo
Getting Our Priorities Straight In Higher Education, John J. Petillo
SHU Faculty Publications
Higher education is not just about the schools. It is about the individuals and what society needs to flourish, prosper and grow.
We’ve entered a new and perilous era when the schools that try to inspire students to a higher calling will be penalized by federal aid distribution. The government’s formula discounts the personal development of the individual and the need for social consciousness.

Moocs And Modern Democracies, Richard L. Pate
WCBT Faculty Publications
A discussion of the imposition of the interests of the few on the collective through a subtle but effective manner: the eventual, complete development of Massive Open Online Courses. It is this article’s premise that this development together with current marketing efficacy and the present economic goals of modern democracies, is probable to result in a shrinkage of the market place of ideas and, paradoxically, likely to result in a diminution of democracy in the world.
