Selective Tooth Clipping In The Management Of Low-Birth-Weight Piglets, S. Robert, B. K. Thompson, David Fraser

Farm Animal Husbandry Collection

A study was designed to test the potential benefits of selective tooth clipping (the practice of leaving the eye teeth intact in the smallest piglets of a litter to make them more competitive) under commercial conditions. A total of 346 litters were assigned to either the control treatment where all piglets had their teeth clipped, or the experimental treatment where one or more piglets of low birth weight had their teeth left intact. Piglets were weighed within 24 h of birth and at 7, 21 and 56 d. In litters of 12-14 animals, but not in smaller litters, the lower-birth-weight …

It was just a few weeks ago that we went through the spectacle of Mickey Mantle's liver transplant which gave us a preview of the sort of emotional outpouring that would come at his death. At the time the surgery seemed to be a success and there was hope that Mickey would survive. We now know that this was not to be, as the cancer spread quickly throughout Mickey's body. His doctors tell us that they have never seen such a virulent form of cancer as it moved with incredible speed. But then with Mickey nothing was ordinary.

The main aim of the paper is to critically review past commodity marketing systems in Nigeria, highlight some of the weaknesses which constrained their efficiency, as well as assess the performance of the present system and determine the advisability of retaining or modifying the present marketing arrangement. First and foremost is the turmoil surrounding the NBA where a very ugly scenario has developed involving an attempt by agents to decertify the Players Association and take total control of the economics of the game. Late Tuesday night came word that a new agreement has been reached by the League and the Players Association, but it remains to be seen if Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing and their puppet masters will accept it.

As is well known, a monetary union with a common currency confers on its members the advantage of fixed exchange rate and consequent relative price stability. While these advantages held sway up to the mid-1980s in the case of the seven member countries of the CEA franc zone in West Africa, the vulnerability of the zone to external shocks became manifest from the second half of the 1980s. The trophy hunting of exotic animals by American big game hunters is increasing at an alarming rate. Over 45,000 foreign animals were killed and imported to the U.S. by American trophy hunters in 1993, a 71% increase in only a four-year period. Among the imported trophies are thousands of threatened and endangered species, as well as species listed under CITES. The number of endangered and threatened species killed and imported by American trophy hunters increased by 83% in the same period. In the first voting for entrance into the Hall of Fame Ty Cobb outpolled all his rivals. Ernest Hemmingway thought him one of the greatest, but also a despicable human being. For an NBA expansion team to go to the NBA finals in its sixth season is a remarkable feat. For that team to be swept in the finals by a clearly superior team is not surprising. The Magic were outmanned, outgunned, outhustled, outcoached and outclassed by one of the great NBA teams of the last several decades. Clearly Hakeem Olajuwon is one of the best centers in the history of the game, and his supporting cast was nearly flawless.
