Unemployment Insurance, Duration Of Unemployment, And Subsequent Wage Gain, Ronald Ehrenberg, Ronald Oaxaca
Unemployment Insurance, Duration Of Unemployment, And Subsequent Wage Gain, Ronald Ehrenberg, Ronald Oaxaca
Ronald G. Ehrenberg
[Excerpt] In order to evaluate what the "optimal" level of UI benefits is, one must therefore first estimate the magnitude of the relationships between UI benefits levels and unemployed workers' durations of unemployment and post-unemployment wages. There have been several previous studies of the impact of UI benefits on duration of spells of unemployment, however none have been completely satisfactory methodologically. To our knowledge, there have been no previous studies of the system's impact on subsequent wage rates. We attempt to fill these gaps, utilizing data from the National Longitudinal Survey (NLS) to estimate both relationships. The plan of our …
Workers, Racism And History: A Response, Nick Salvatore
Workers, Racism And History: A Response, Nick Salvatore
Nick Salvatore
[Excerpt] This intimate dependence of white egalitarianism upon black exclusion forms the central theme of Herbert Hill's essay. Arguing that this condition is neither episodic nor solely of historical interest, Hill asserts that these racist attitudes (and the action that flowed from them) were systemic across two centuries of working class development and actually provide the central continuous rational for understanding institutional trade union activity from the early nineteenth century into the present. America's labor unions. Hill writes, are "the institutional expression of white working class racism, and of policies and practices that resulted in unequal access, dependent on race, …
The Impact Of Husband’S Job Loss On Partners’ Mental Health, Silvia Mendolia
The Impact Of Husband’S Job Loss On Partners’ Mental Health, Silvia Mendolia
Silvia Mendolia
The objective of this paper is to examine the impact of job loss on family mental well-being. The negative income shock can affect the mental health status of the individual who directly experiences such displacement, as well as the psychological well-being of his partner; also, job loss may have a significantly detrimental effect on life satisfaction, self-esteem and on the individual’s perceived role in society. This analysis is based on a sample of married and cohabitating couples from the first 14 waves of the British Household Panel Survey. In order to correct for the possible endogeneity of job loss, data …

The Ilo And The Australian Contribution To The International Labour Standards Debate, Chris Nyland, Robert Castle
Robert G. Castle
Summarizes the debate between those who are urging the World Trade Organization to adopt a social clause that links the right to engage in international trade with basic labour rights, and those who believe that this would harm the ability of developing countries to compete with the advanced economies because it would prevent them paying lower wages to their workers. Sets out the background to this debate, before examining how it has been carried forward in Australia, looking at the submissions made to the Duffy Report, published in 1996, and the subsequent debate. Analyses the positions taken by the Australian …

Seasonal Work And Aboriginal Employment In Two Nsw Rural Areas, Robert Castle, James Hagan
Robert G. Castle
This paper has several areas of focus. It chronicles the history of Aboriginal employment in Australia in two contrasting areas; it identifies the characteristics of that employment and traces the nature of its change over time; it outlines the attitude of Aborigines towards their work, and the impact of that work on Aboriginal society; it also considers the attitudes of white Australians towards Aborigines and their employment. Finally, it draws some conclusions concerning the responses of the Aborigines to pressures put on them by the economy and society of the white man.

Share Farming And The Development Of The Dairy Industry In New South Wales 1890‐1940, Robert Castle, James Hagan
Robert G. Castle
This article assesses the role of share fanning in the NSW dairy industry until the second world war. It examines the origins of the industry and the effects of the 'Dairy Revolution' on the production of milk, cream and butter in the context of the NSW government's policy of 'closer settlement'. It considers the advantages and disadvantages of share farming for both landlords and share farmers and traces some of the social and economic consequences for the industry and the people involved. In doing so it offers a new explanation for the expansion of the industry and the problems that …

Child Labour In South Asia: Domestic And International Initiatives Including Ilo And Wto, D P Chaudhri, Robert Castle, Chris Nyland
Robert G. Castle
South Asia has the largest concentration of child labour and of children not participating in school education. This paper aims to examine the trends in the incidence of child labour in five countries of the region, for the period 1965-1995 and to to delineate patterns in socio-economic correlates relevant to this issue. Multilateral organizations and national governments need to focus the greater part of their efforts on the children most at risk-i.e., those in morally and physically hazardous occupations. The national governments must focus more on agriculture and home-based occupations in the informal sector which account for a large amount …

Toolkit For Managing Virtual Teams, Grace Mccarthy
Toolkit For Managing Virtual Teams, Grace Mccarthy
Grace McCarthy
Leaders in multi-national organisations have to work with team members in many different locations, with few if any face to face meetings. This poses problems for leaders used to working face to face. This article briefly reviews the literature, finding some consensus that leadership is significant in managing virtual teams but that the practices adopted by leaders need to be adapted, that trust is one of the key predictors of success, and that technology and training also help improve performance of virtual teams.

The Latino Immigrant Labor Experience As Depicted In Film, Duane Wright
The Latino Immigrant Labor Experience As Depicted In Film, Duane Wright
Duane E Wright II
The author argues that traditional macro-level methods of gathering data on populations create an impersonal depiction of the group. A useful pedagogical tool for teachers to counter this is to use fictional accounts in film and literature to put a more human face on the subjects being studied. Two films, Bread and Roses and El Norte, are used in this way to enhance or add another dimension to studies of the labor experience of Latino immigrants in the United States. The films are looked at through various sociological theories, Assimilation, Competition, and Neo-Marxist. The author concludes that Neo-Marxist theory best …
Human Rights-Based Sustainable Development Practical And Theoretical Reflection On The Strategic Centrality Of Human Rights In Pursuing Sustainable International Development, Marco Tavanti
Marco Tavanti
As sustainability is linked to social responsibility, sustainable development is inherently linked to human rights. The social, economic, cultural and environmental struggles among indigenous communities of Chiapas, Mexico, speak of the centrality of human rights in achieving sustainable development. This paper addresses the theoretical and practical implication that human rights have if placed at the center of sustainable development models. Through an examination of the Sustain-Able Chiapas Program (among Maya and Zapatista communities) and the insights of Dr. Alfredo Sfeir Younis (the first environmental economist of the World Bank) the paper offers innovative insights into a right-based model for achieving …
On Equilibrium In Resource Markets With Scale Economies And Stochastic Prices, Charles Mason
On Equilibrium In Resource Markets With Scale Economies And Stochastic Prices, Charles Mason
Charles F Mason
In this paper, I show the existence and the characteristics of equilibrium in a non-renewable resource market where extraction costs are non-convex and market price is subject to stochastic shocks, an empirically relevant setting. In my model firms may be motivated to hold inventories to facilitate production smoothing, which allows them to continue producing at a smooth pace at any instant when extraction ceases, e.g. when reserves are exhausted. This aspect of the model then supports a competitive equilibrium in the presence of non-convex costs. Casual empirical evidence is provided that supports the central features of my model for a …

Womens’ Managerial Aspirations: An Organizational Development Perspective, Grace Lemmon
Womens’ Managerial Aspirations: An Organizational Development Perspective, Grace Lemmon
Grace Lemmon
Some authors have explained the dearth of women leaders as an “opt-out revolution”—that women today are making a choice not to aspire to leadership positions. The authors of this article present a model that tests managers’ biased evaluations of women as less career motivated as an explanation for why women have lower managerial aspirations than men. Specifically, they hypothesize that day-to-day managerial decisions involving allocating challenging work, training and development, and career encouragement mean women accrue less organizational development, and this is one explanation for their lower managerial aspirations. The authors’ model is based on social role theory and is …
