This chapter seeks to unlock the intriguing complexity of Wilder’s heroism

and strives to give Wilder’s heroism the methodical reveling it deserves.

Specifically, the chapter will begin by exploring Wilder’s heroism through

the metaphorical lens of Joseph Campbell’s hero monomyth. Following that

exploration will be an analytical look at the qualities Wilder possesses that

place him among the pantheon of heroes. Then I will delve into the major

transformations that Wilder underwent internally, and how he also use his

transformations to transform others. Finally, the chapter will look at the lasting

This chapter focuses on Mary Sue Terry’s heroism. Specifically, the goal of this chapter is to

demonstrate how Terry’s life followed Joseph Campbell’s classic monomyth

of the hero, how she underwent important personal transformations, how

she transformed others in meaningful ways, what type of hero she was, and

what heroic traits she displayed. From this analysis, the unmistakable conclusion

that one can reach is that Mary Sue Terry is one of the most inspiring

Richmond heroes in the city’s history.

In this chapter, I will detail the heroic life of Mary Elizabeth Bowser. In doing

so, I will describe her life story and note the many ways that it parallels the

hero's journey as described by comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell

(1949). I will also discuss the central characteristics of Bowser that correspond

to the traits of a hero. Moreover, my goal is to delve into her heroic transformation,

noting the sources of her transformation and the many people who

Discussion has occurred around what constitutes quality research poetry, with some direction on how a researcher, who is a novice poet, might go about writing good enough research poetry. In an effort to increase the existing conversation, the authors review research poetry literature and ideas from art poets on how to read, write, and revise poetry. The authors interrupt the prose text throughout with poetic interludes and quotes from poets. The conversation is framed by the conception of ish and poemish which is drawn directly from Reynolds’s powerful book ish. This chapter will investigate

the lives of three important citizens of Richmond, Virginia, who have made

important contributions to humanity. First, important definitions and theories

of heroism will be provided. Then the chapter will classify and discuss

the heroism of Richmond’s own Gilbert Hunt, Elizabeth Van Lew, and Sally

Tompkins. The chapter concludes by discussing possible explanations as to

why these three heroes have remained largely unknown.

supremely generous gift, and how they continued to lead a life of purpose

This article describes the heroic efforts of E. Claiborne and Lora Robins in saving the University of Richmond from the brink of bankruptcy. These two heroes' personal transformations will in part be explained by drawing upon

Allison and Goethals’ (2011) great eight traits of a hero, as well as the need for

a hero to discover his or her missing inner quality. Just how the Robins transformed

the community at the University of Richmond will then be discussed,

taking into account their family’s more recent history of generosity and the

Robins’ image as role models.

The Dark Side Of Creative Tourism: A Philosophical Dialogue With Culture, Babu P. George

Babu George

This manuscript interrogates the epistemological limitations of creative tourism, which is framed technically within “cultural tourism”. Discussing the old prejudices and paternalist discourses of colonialism, where “science” developed an uncanny sentiment of protection and submission for aboriginals, “cultural tourism” emulates old forms of domination, in a context of extremes and economic crisis. If creativity only works in contexts of scarcity, it would be interesting to understand capitalism as a cultural project that shows some problems to understand the “ non-European other” and environmental resources.

Queer Politics In Neoliberal Times (1970s-2010s), Margot Weiss

Margot Weiss

Neoliberalism has had a profound effect on post-1970s LGBT/queer cultures and politics. This essay reviews how, by privatizing social services, fostering consumer citizenship, and promoting corporate welfare and urban redevelopment, neoliberal policies have pit “deserving” gays and lesbians against “undeserving” others: the same-sex married couple vs. the “welfare queen,” the gay/lesbian consumer-citizen vs. the poor queer, and the gay gentrifier vs. the “dangerous” other. Historicizing these oppositions reveals the intersections of sexuality, class, gender, race, and social policy that remain central to queer politics today.

High on the east bank of the River Foyle, literally at ‘the Top of the Hill’ at the highest elevation in the city limits of Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland, a temple stood briefly. At 72 feet high, it towered over its surroundings, a thin spire mirroring the city’s cathedral steeples on the river’s opposite bank. The sign at its entrance instructed ‘Leave a memory behind, let go of the past and look to the future.’ Memories relinquished would not remain – at least not in their material forms. ‘Temple’ was made to be ephemeral, built to be consumed in flames on …

Teaching Roman Mobility: Digital Visualization In The Classroom And In Undergraduate Research, Micah Myers, Joseph M. Murphy

This paper looks at pedagogical applications of our web-based digital visualization project, Mapping Ancient Texts (MAT). We discuss: (1) a course in which students use the web application Carto to create visualizations from geo-spatial information in Cicero’s Letters; and (2) a student-researcher developing a digital visualization of Hannibal’s movements during the Second Punic War. This paper explores how these projects teach important technical skills and engage students in detailed analysis of Roman mobility and history. We also discuss the challenges of using evolving technologies in the liberal arts setting.

Young adults with neurodevelopmental brain disorders such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorders (FASD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) are often provided with unsuitable public housing that is not tailored to support their differences, needs, and wants. This poster illustrates a pilot research project to survey young adults in this population to find out what their preferences are in terms of where and how they would like to live.

Meditating on a single photograph from a recent Human Rights Watch report concerning police violence in Northern British Columbia, Canada, this paper pursues two lines of questions about the visual politics of human rights. One concerns how our ways of seeing—our modes of attending to the vulnerability and integrity of particular persons—can itself be understood as a form of human rights practice. The other aims to widen space in contemporary political theory for thinking about how sexual violence functions as a central technology of sovereignty and how we might make this phenomenon more perceptible. This paper explores Michal Heiman's creative strategy to imaginatively enter the space of asylum. Her recent project, RETURN: ASYLUM (THE DRESS, 1855-2018), offers a new way to extend solidarity to people who have been subjugated by the institution. She actively enlists the public's help in developing further strategies for connecting with those individuals who have been bereft of legal rights to property, family, or public hearing. This article explores Heiman's crucial political intervention, which blends creative visual practice with object relations theory.
