Developing An Ecological Sanitation Transect, Ian Kolesinskas Mar 2016

Developing An Ecological Sanitation Transect, Ian Kolesinskas

Masters Theses

A sanitation problem exists for people across the globe: basic human waste collection and treatment is inaccessible to much of the world’s population; and the status-quo gray infrastructure system of sanitation is unsustainable and unsuitable for widespread application. A paradigm shift is needed: this thesis makes the case for developing an Ecological Sanitation Transect to bring back the closed loop that connects consumption, waste excretion, sanitation, and food production. The Ecological Sanitation Transect is a synthesis of ecological sanitation, where human excreta is reused, and the urban transect, where development density is conceptualized along a continuum from rural to urban. …

Spatial And Temporal Impacts Of Incentive Payments For Forest-Based Carbon Sequestration, Juhee Lee Dec 2015

Spatial And Temporal Impacts Of Incentive Payments For Forest-Based Carbon Sequestration, Juhee Lee

Masters Theses

This thesis consists of two essays on impacts of incentive payments for forest-based carbon sequestration, focusing particularly on spatial and temporal aspects in the first and second essays, respectively. The purpose of the first essay is to determine if a county-level tax-based subsidy approach is a valid alternative to existing subsidy approaches for forest carbon sequestration. A land use change model is used to test the hypothesis based on a case study of Bureau of Economic Analysis Area 88 (BEAA 88). The empirical results show that the increased net return from waiving the property tax increases the share of forestland …

Cattle Producers East Of The 100th Meridian: A Study Of Afforestation Adoption And Use Of Pasture Management Practices, Hannah Sage Claytor

Masters Theses

This thesis explores two topics related to cattle producers: the adoption of afforestation on pastureland and the use of pasture management practices. Chapter 1 uses a triple hurdle model to analyze a decision process related to the adoption and acreage enrollment of afforestation in a hypothetical program. The results suggest that producers interested in afforestation are more likely to have a college degree, own woodland, attend extension workshops, and have previous experience with afforestation. Producers who were offered a lower incentive enrolled more acres in the hypothetical program. Producers who were offered a higher incentive enrolled fewer acres.

Chapter 2 …

Locational Advantage And The Impact Of Scale: Comparing Local And Conventional Fruit And Vegetable Transportation Efficiencies, Charles Cate Grigsby May 2015

Locational Advantage And The Impact Of Scale: Comparing Local And Conventional Fruit And Vegetable Transportation Efficiencies, Charles Cate Grigsby

Masters Theses

Fresh produce in the United States often travels thousands of miles in diesel operated semi-trucks before arriving to market. Under a high fuel cost scenario, the current low-cost, efficient supply chain could become a high cost organizational structure for US food distribution. Rising transportation costs of food sourced from distant locations may provide competitive opportunities for small- and mid-sized local producers if transportation costs are a smaller portion of their total costs. Farmers selling fresh produce in east Tennessee farmer markets are surveyed to obtain baseline information on their transportation energy use to deliver their products to market. Local farmer …

“Common Sense” Versus “Good Sense”: Marginalization In Agriculture, Mark W. Hoock Dec 2013

“Common Sense” Versus “Good Sense”: Marginalization In Agriculture, Mark W. Hoock

Masters Theses

Scholars have engaged in discussions of when and where capitalism emerged in agrarian America. These discussions have led to categorizations that placed some farms outside the discussion of capitalist interrelationships. This separation homogenized many 19th and early 20th century farms on the Hector Backbone in Schuyler County New York into a “non-capitalist” category. This thesis aims to illuminate the real lived conditions of a sample of these farmers through a Marxist dialectical perspective. Archeological analysis of production strategies, through a Marxist framework allows for a better understanding of the differences between individual marginalized farms. Since analysis of a …

Switchgrass Capacity Procurement Contract And Tonnage Contract Pricing, Tianpeng Zhou Aug 2013

Switchgrass Capacity Procurement Contract And Tonnage Contract Pricing, Tianpeng Zhou

Masters Theses

The on-farm production of switchgrass has been given considerable attention by farmers, policymakers and others. However, because the switchgrass market is not developed yet, most of the research only focuses on the switchgrass breakeven cost. The appropriate price combining interests of both the biorefinery and the farmers, or the contract price, has not been given enough attention.

Two types of contractual relationships are discussed in this thesis: Capacity Procurement Contract (CPC, per acre contract) and Tonnage Contract (TC, per ton contract). The contract prices of switchgrass under these two types of contracts are estimated in this analysis. Because the land …

Analyzing Effects On Biofuels While Integrating The Agricultural Sector To The Energy Market: Linking Polysys And Markal, Shreekar Pradhan

Masters Theses

Two different sectoral models: POLYSYS (agricultural) and MARKAL (energy) are soft-linked in a modeling framework. The linkage benefits the strengths of price dynamics of biofuel crops in POLYSYS and the least cost biofuel supply in MARKAL. As the result the framework can now evaluate implication of biofuel policy in the agricultural and energy sectors simultaneously. This study utilizes the linkage to evaluate the implication of biofuel subsidy policy on the agricultural and energy sectors. Three scenarios are developed. First, the base case assumes current subsidy for corn ethanol and cellulosic ethanol will be continued until 2030. Second scenario (Sub1) assesses …
