Masters Theses

This thesis is an exercise in, perhaps a futile, attempt to trace just some of the ideas, stories, and musings I might meander through in my process. It’s not quite a map, nor is it a neat catalogue; it is a haphazard collection of tickets and receipts from a travel abroad, carelessly tossed in a carry-on, only to be stashed upon returning home. These ideas are derived from much greater thinkers and authors than myself; I am a mere collector or a translator, if that, and not a very good one, for much is lost. I do not claim comprehensive …

Design And Fabrication Of A Trapped Ion Quantum Computing Testbed, Christopher A. Caron Aug 2023

Design And Fabrication Of A Trapped Ion Quantum Computing Testbed, Christopher A. Caron

Masters Theses

Here we present the design, assembly and successful ion trapping of a room-temperature ion trap system with a custom designed and fabricated surface electrode ion trap, which allows for rapid prototyping of novel trap designs such that new chips can be installed and reach UHV in under 2 days. The system has demonstrated success at trapping and maintaining both single ions and cold crystals of ions. We achieve this by fabricating our own custom surface Paul traps in the UMass Amherst cleanroom facilities, which are then argon ion milled, diced, mounted and wire bonded to an interposer which is placed …

Installation And Alignment Of The N3he Experiment, Eric Lee Plemons Dec 2015

Installation And Alignment Of The N3he Experiment, Eric Lee Plemons

Masters Theses

The n3He experiment is designed to probe the hadronic weak interaction by measuring the parity violating asymmetry between the spin of incoming neutrons and the momentum of outgoing protons following the nuclear break up of a helium three upon absorbing a neutron. Cold neutrons from the SNS are first polarized then allowed to impact a target chamber filled with helium three where the reaction occurs. Energetic particles resulting from the nuclear breakup ionize the helium three gas and are thereby detected as currents by an array of signal wires within the target chamber. In order to make a statistics limited …

Catalytic Methane Dissociative Chemisorption Over Pt(111): Surface Coverage Effects And Reaction Path Description, Inara Colon-Diaz Mar 2015

Catalytic Methane Dissociative Chemisorption Over Pt(111): Surface Coverage Effects And Reaction Path Description, Inara Colon-Diaz

Masters Theses

Density functional theory calculations were performed to study the dissociative chemisorption of methane over Pt(111) with the idea of finding the minimum energy path for the reaction and its dependence on surface coverage. Two approaches were used to evaluate this problem; first, we used different sizes of supercells (2x2, 3x3, 4x4) in order to decrease surface coverage in the absence of pre-adsorbed H and CH3 fragments to calculate the energy barriers of dissociation. The second approach uses a 4x4 unit cell and surface coverage is simulated by adding pre-absorbed H and CH3 fragments. Results for both approaches show …

The Fine-Tuning Of Nomic Behavior In Multiverse Scenarios, Max Lewis Edward Andrews May 2013

The Fine-Tuning Of Nomic Behavior In Multiverse Scenarios, Max Lewis Edward Andrews

Masters Theses

The multiverse hypothesis (the view that there is not just one world or universe in existence, bur rather that there are many) is the leading alternative to the competing fine-tuning hypothesis (the laws of physics and constants are fine-tuned for the existence of life). The multiverse dispels many aspects of the fine-tuning argument by suggesting that there are different initial conditions in each universe, varying constants of physics, and the laws of nature lose their known arbitrary values; thus, making the previous single-universe argument from fine- tuning incredibly weak. The position that will be advocated will be that a form …
