Modified Geometries, Clifford Algebras And Graphs: Their Impact On Discreteness, Locality And Symmetr, Roma Sverdlov

In this dissertation I will explore the question whether various entities commonly used in quantum field theory can be “constructed". In particular, can spacetime be “constructed" out of building blocks, and can Berezin integral be “constructed" in terms of Riemann integrals.

As far as “constructing" spacetime out of building blocks, it has been attempted by multiple scientific communities and various models were proposed. But the common downfall is they break the principles of relativity. I will explore the ways of doing so in such a way that principles of relativity are respected. One of my approaches is to replace points …

A Search For New Physics In B(S) To Mu+Mu- Decays Using Multivariate Data Analysis, And Development Of Particle Detection Technology With Silicon Pixel Detectors, Aidan Grummer Apr 2021

A Search For New Physics In B(S) To Mu+Mu- Decays Using Multivariate Data Analysis, And Development Of Particle Detection Technology With Silicon Pixel Detectors, Aidan Grummer

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

A suite of linked research projects is undertaken, combining a search for phenomena beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, development of new instruments for greater precision in detecting fundamental particles, and tracking and understanding the effect upon the detectors of the radiation that is an indelible element of their operating environment. Data recorded by the ATLAS Detector at CERN are employed in a search for evidence of undiscovered particles contributing to the rate of decays of B0 and B0s mesons to dimuon final states. New applications of machine learning techniques are implemented to separate this signal …

From Wave Propagation To Spin Dynamics: Mathematical And Computational Aspects, Oleksii Beznosov Nov 2020

From Wave Propagation To Spin Dynamics: Mathematical And Computational Aspects, Oleksii Beznosov

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In this work we concentrate on two separate topics which pose certain numerical challenges. The first topic is the spin dynamics of electrons in high-energy circular accelerators. We introduce a stochastic differential equation framework to study spin depolarization and spin equilibrium. This framework allows the mathematical study of known equations and new equations modelling the spin distribution of an electron bunch. A spin distribution is governed by a so-called Bloch equation, which is a linear Fokker-Planck type PDE, in general posed in six dimensions. We propose three approaches to approximate solutions, using analytical and modern numerical techniques. We also present …

Dark Matter Production Beyond The Thermal Wimp Paradigm: An Exploration Of Early Matter Domination Scenarios, Jacek Ksawery Osinski Dec 2019

Dark Matter Production Beyond The Thermal Wimp Paradigm: An Exploration Of Early Matter Domination Scenarios, Jacek Ksawery Osinski

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

In the standard thermal history of the Universe, the energy density is dominated by radiation throughout the postinflationary era, until matter-radiation equality after big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). However, we currently do not have any observational probes of the pre-BBN period, and radiation domination (RD) is therefore an assumption. Generic early Universe models predict the presence of additional components in the postinflationary Universe which can lead to periods of nonstandard evolution before the onset of BBN. A prominent example of such a period is a phase of early matter domination (EMD) in which the Universe undergoes matter-dominated expansion for a time, …

Miniclean Dark Matter Experiment, Juijen Wang Sep 2017

Miniclean Dark Matter Experiment, Juijen Wang

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Particle Dark Matter is a hypothesis accounting for a number of observed astrophysical phenomena such as the anomalous galactic rotation curves. From these astronomical observation, about 23% of the universe appears to consist of dark matter. Among the possible candidates for dark matter, a plausible one is a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP). A particle with the required properties is beyond the standard model of particle physics. The MiniCLEAN experiment is single-phase liquid-argon detector instrumented with 92 photomultiplier tubes placed inside the cryogenic liquid with 4-pi coverage of a 500 kg (150 kg) target (fiducial) mass. For this experiment, PMT …

Probing Dark Matter-Neutrino Connection Via Indirect Detection Experiments, Bradley Knockel Nov 2016

Probing Dark Matter-Neutrino Connection Via Indirect Detection Experiments, Bradley Knockel

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Various evidence reveals that dark matter is a primary component of this universe. The amount of dark matter is known, but its identity is a mystery. To determine its properties, efforts to detect and produce dark matter are underway. Dark matter annihilations throughout the galaxy may produce photons, neutrinos, and cosmic rays. Neutrino and photon detectors may then indirectly detect dark matter by detecting these annihilation products. The annihilation rate, dark matter mass, and dark matter scattering rate off of matter affect the signals received at Earth. These signals can therefore probe the identity of dark matter, especially if dark …
