We explore the potential of jet observables in charged-current deep inelastic scattering events at the future Electron-Ion Collider. Tagging jets with a recoiling neutrino, which can be identified by the event’s missing transverse momentum, will allow for flavor-sensitive measurements of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions. We present the first predictions for transverse-spin asymmetries in azimuthal neutrino-jet correlations and hadron-in-jet measurements. We study the kinematic reach and the precision of these measurements and explore their feasibility using parametrized detector simulations. We conclude that jet production in charged-current deep inelastic scattering, while challenging in terms of luminosity requirements, will complement the …

A Measurement Of The Cross Section At √S = 8 Tev In Pp Collisions With The Cms Detector, Ekaterina Avdeeva Dec 2017

A Measurement Of The Wγ Cross Section At √S = 8 Tev In Pp Collisions With The Cms Detector, Ekaterina Avdeeva

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A measurement of cross section of the Wγ → lνγ production in proton-proton collisions using 19.6 fb − 1 of LHC data collected by CMS detector at the center- √ of-mass collision energy of s = 8 TeV is reported. The W bosons are identified in their electron and muon decay modes. The process of Wγ production in the Standard Model (SM) involves a pure gauge boson coupling, a WWγ vertex, which allows one to test the electroweak sector of the SM in a unique way not achievable by studies of other processes. In addition to the total cross section, …

Unification Of Gravity And Quantum Theory, Adam Daniels Jan 2017

Unification Of Gravity And Quantum Theory, Adam Daniels

Faculty-Sponsored Student Research & Capstones

An overview of the four fundamental forces of physics as described by the Standard Model (SM) and prevalent unifying theories beyond it is provided. Background knowledge of the particles governing the fundamental forces is provided, as it will be useful in understanding the way in which the unification efforts of particle physics has evolved, either from the SM, or apart from it. It is shown that efforts to provide a quantum theory of gravity have allowed supersymmetry (SUSY) and M-Theory to become two of the prevailing theories for unifying gravity with the remaining non-gravitational forces.

Top Quark And Charged Higgs Production At Hadron Colliders, Nikolaos Kidonakis May 2005

Top Quark And Charged Higgs Production At Hadron Colliders, Nikolaos Kidonakis

Faculty Articles

I present a brief theoretical update on top quark pair production at the Tevatron and give values of the NNLO-NNNLL cross section for both m_t=175 and 178 GeV. I then present a calculation of the cross section for charged Higgs production in association with a top quark at the LHC, including NNLO soft-gluon corrections.
