First Measurement Of B(Ξc0 → Π−Λ+C ), Michael Kent Wilkinson

Dissertations - ALL

The first measurement of the branching fraction of the Ξc0 baryon in its decay to π− and Λ+c hadrons, B(Ξc0 → π−Λ+c ), is presented. This measurement was conducted with the LHCb detector, located on the Large Hadron Collider, using 13 TeV proton-proton collisions. There have been a number of theoretical predictions for the size of this branching fraction, spanning more than an order of magnitude; this large difference is primarily due to differing assumptions about the internal interactions contributing to the decay. The branching fraction measured here provides the first experimental evidence for the nature of these interactions; it …

The results of a search for gluino and squark pair production with the pairs decaying via the lightest charginos into a final state consisting of two W bosons, the lightest neutralinos ((chi) over tilde (0)(1)), and quarks, are presented: the signal is characterised by the presence of a single charged lepton (e(+/-) or mu(+/-)) from a W boson decay, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The analysis is performed using 139 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data taken at a centre-of-mass energy root s = 13 delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the ATLAS experiment. No statistically significant excess …

The Effects Of A Weak Alternating Magnetic Field On Glutamic Acid, Carston Work, Ben Pound

There has been substantial research showing the effects of Extremely Low Frequency Electromagnetic Fields (ELF-EMF) on various properties of liquids, among the most notable being the acidity of a solution. ELF-EMFs have amplitudes typically measured on the scale of microteslas, and have frequencies comparable to the cyclotron frequency of the molecule its ionic form. It is hypothesized that the magnetic field changes the coordination of water, which in turn affects the pH of the solution. This is difficult to measure directly, but it can be measured by adding a molecule that can be detected by IR spectroscopy that is sensitive …

[1] Polarization Jet (PJ), also known as Sub-Auroral Ion Drift (SAID), events are supersonic westward plasma drifts on the equatorward edge of the diffuse aurora in the evening and nighttime sector. Their optical F-region signatures are weak 630.0 nm red arcs colocated with regions of fast convection. These weak arcs resemble Stable Auroral Red (SAR) arcs observed during the recovery phase of magnetic storms, but have lower intensities, shorter lifetimes, and occur without a significant heat flux from the magnetosphere. Previous model studies underestimated the brightness of weak SAR arcs. We present calculations showing that ion-neutral collisional heating and ion …
