Heterostructure Of 2d Materials: Hfs2/Hfo2/Si, Christopher J. Robledo Aug 2020

Heterostructure Of 2d Materials: Hfs2/Hfo2/Si, Christopher J. Robledo

MSU Graduate Theses

Heterostructures have been utilized in electronic devices for over 50 years with the proposal for the first heterostructure transistor in 1957. With the scaling of devices, it is necessary to create new heterostructures that will comply with Moore’s Law, as well as make devices faster and consume less power. Novel 2D materials, such as hafnium disulfide, have shown promise as an active channel layer, while hafnium dioxide is already proven to be a replacement of silicon dioxide for the gate insulating layer. However, fabrication techniques for wide-scale integration of these heterostructures have not yet been achieved. Also, the dielectric properties …

High-Temperature Optical Properties Of Indium Tin Oxide Thin-Films, Jiwoong Kim, Sujan Shrestha, Maryam Souri, John G. Connell, Sungkyun Park, Ambrose Seo

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Indium tin oxide (ITO) is one of the most widely used transparent conductors in optoelectronic device applications. We investigated the optical properties of ITO thin films at high temperatures up to 800 °C using spectroscopic ellipsometry. As temperature increases, amorphous ITO thin films undergo a phase transition at ~ 200 °C and develop polycrystalline phases with increased optical gap energies. The optical gap energies of both polycrystalline and epitaxial ITO thin films decrease with increasing temperature due to electron-phonon interactions. Depending on the background oxygen partial pressure, however, we observed that the optical gap energies exhibit reversible changes, implying that …

Fabrication Of Magnetocaloric La(Fe,Si)13 Thick Films, N H. Dung, N B. Doan, P De Rango, L Ranno, Karl G. Sandeman, N M. Dempsey Jun 2020

Fabrication Of Magnetocaloric La(Fe,Si)13 Thick Films, N H. Dung, N B. Doan, P De Rango, L Ranno, Karl G. Sandeman, N M. Dempsey

Publications and Research

La(Fe,Si)13–based compounds are considered to be very promising magnetocaloric materials for magnetic refrigeration applications. Many studies have focused on this material family but only in bulk form. In this paper we report on the fabrication of thick films of La(Fe,Si)13, both with and without post-hydriding. These films exhibit magnetic and structural properties comparable to bulk materials. We also observe that the ferromagnetic phase transition has a negative thermal hysteresis, a phenomenon not previously found in this material but which may have its origins in the availability of a strain energy reservoir, as in the cases of …

Fabrication Of Nanoscale Columnar Diodes By Glancing Angle Deposition, Jacob D. Weightman May 2020

Fabrication Of Nanoscale Columnar Diodes By Glancing Angle Deposition, Jacob D. Weightman

Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy

Glancing angle deposition (GLAD) is a process in which thin films are deposited onto a substrate with obliquely incident vapor together with precisely controlled azimuthal substrate rotation. Ballistic shadowing effects due to the oblique incidence produce nanoscale structures, and a variety of feature shapes, including tilted columns, helices, and vertical columns can be achieved by varying the azimuthal rotation during the deposition process. Due to this control of morphology and the compatibility of the process with a wide variety of materials, GLAD films have found applications in a variety of fields including sensing, photonics, photovoltaics, and catalysis, where they are …

Investigation Of Mnxni1-Xo Thin Films Using Pulsed Laser Deposition, Md Ashif Anwar May 2020

Investigation Of Mnxni1-Xo Thin Films Using Pulsed Laser Deposition, Md Ashif Anwar

MSU Graduate Theses

The exchange bias (EB) effect, especially in nanomaterials, is highly promising for use in antiferromagnet-based spintronics applications. NiO is a well known antiferromagnetic material with a high Néel temperature (525K) and can exhibit ferromagnetism/ ferrimagnetism by adding other magnetic transition elements. Our previous work has shown that the antiferromagnetic characteristics of conventional NiO insulating nanostructured material can be altered to have substantial ferrimagnetic characteristics by doping NiO with Mn or Co. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) was used to grow heterostructures comprised of a nanostructured thin NiO film deposited on the surface of a MgO (100) and Al2O3 …

Structural Behavior Of Rf Magnetron Sputtered Cupric Oxide (Cuo) Films, Ali Nadhim Khilkhal, Abdalhussain A. Khadayeir Apr 2020

Structural Behavior Of Rf Magnetron Sputtered Cupric Oxide (Cuo) Films, Ali Nadhim Khilkhal, Abdalhussain A. Khadayeir

Al-Qadisiyah Journal of Pure Science

In this paper a CuO thin film, has been deposited using RF sputtering technique, then the thin film has been characterized by XRD, result obtained showed that strongest peak was 48.6503 degree, and FWHM was 0.145 degree, while lattice constant was 4.65 Aº, and the average grain size was 62.78 nm. While AFM analysis showed that the increasing of another four samples temperature led to increase of roughness average from (3.77 to 15.7) nm, root mean square from (4.66 to 18.8) nm and ten points height from (22.6 to 52.6) at 250,300,350 and 400 C respectively. On the other hand …
