Magnetic Excitations In The Iron Based Superconductors, Leland Weldon Harriger
Magnetic Excitations In The Iron Based Superconductors, Leland Weldon Harriger
Doctoral Dissertations
Presented within are neutron scattering studies detailing the spin dynamics of BaNi$_{x}$Fe$_{2-x}$As$_{2}$ for x = 0 (parent), 0.04 (underdoped), and 0.1 (optimal) dopings, and FeSe$_{x}$Te$_{1-x}$ for x = 0 (parent), 0.3 (underdoped), and 0.4 (optimal) dopings. These recently discovered Fe-based superconducting compounds are strikingly similar, in many respects, to the cuprate class of unconventional superconductors and share qualitatively similar phase diagrams consisting of a long range ordered magnetic ground state in the parents which, upon doping, is supplanted in favor of superconductivity. The dopings discussed herein allow us to tune through the phase diagram, beginning with long range ordered parents …
Iron Pnictides: Superconductivity In Multi-Orbital Systems, Andrew David Nicholson
Iron Pnictides: Superconductivity In Multi-Orbital Systems, Andrew David Nicholson
Doctoral Dissertations
This work focuses on the development and implementation of microscopic models as well as their numerical and analytical study to elucidate the properties of the iron pnictides. There are many first principle and phenomenological studies of these materials, but there is a need for unbiased numerical calculations following an approach similar to the one used in the study of the Hubbard and t-J models for the cuprates.
First a two orbital model for the pnictides, focusing on two hybridized Fe-d orbitals (dxz and dyz) is formulated, including hoppings between nearest and next nearest neighbors as well as on site Coulomb …
Microstrip Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices For Quantum Information Science, Michael Paul Defeo
Microstrip Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices For Quantum Information Science, Michael Paul Defeo
Physics - Dissertations
Quantum-limited amplification in the microwave frequency range is of both practical and fundamental importance. The weak signals corresponding to single microwave photons require substantial amplification to resolve. When probing quantum excitations of the electromagnetic field, the substantial noise produced by standard amplifiers dominates the signal, therefore, several averages must be accumulated to achieve even a modest signal-to-noise ratio. Even worse, the back-action on the system due to amplifier noise can hasten the decay of the quantum state. In recent years, low-noise microwave-frequency amplification has been advancing rapidly and one field that would benefit greatly from this is circuit quantum electrodynamics …

Magnetic Properties Of Nb/Ni Superconducting / Ferromagnetic Multilayers, Sergiy A. Kryukov
Magnetic Properties Of Nb/Ni Superconducting / Ferromagnetic Multilayers, Sergiy A. Kryukov
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
Magnetic properties of Nb/Ni superconducting (SC) / ferromagnetic (FM) multilayers exhibit interesting properties near and below SC transition. A complex Field (H) – Temperature (T) phase boundary is observed in perpendicular and parallel orientation of ML with respect to DC field. We address the critical need to develop methods to make reliable magnetic measurements on SC thin films and ML, in spite of their extreme shape anisotropy and the strong diamagnetic response of the SC state.
Abrupt, highly reproducible “switching” of the SC state magnetization near the normal-state FM coercive fields has been observed in Nb/Ni ML. The SC penetration …
An Investigation Of Pinning Landscapes With Engineered Defects: Contact-Free Critical Current Density Measurements, John William Sinclair
An Investigation Of Pinning Landscapes With Engineered Defects: Contact-Free Critical Current Density Measurements, John William Sinclair
Doctoral Dissertations
Pinning landscapes in modern second generation coated conductors are excellent candidates for studies of vortex pinning. The ability to produce engineered defects in thin films of high temperature superconductors allows one to investigate representative distinct pinning sites, with the objective of understanding how different pinning centers contribute, compete and evolve under varying conditions of magnetic field strength and orientation, and temperature.New contact-free methods were developed specifically to investigate this system in new ways, especially the dependence of the critical current density Jc on orientation of the magnetic field. A superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID)-based magnetometer was used to determine angular …
Interplay Between Structure And Chemistry Of Materials And Their Physical Properties, Alaska Subedi
Interplay Between Structure And Chemistry Of Materials And Their Physical Properties, Alaska Subedi
Doctoral Dissertations
First principles calculations provide a powerful tool for sorting out the interplay of chemical composition and structure with the physical properties of materials. In this dissertation, I discuss the physical properties and their microscopic basis within this framework for following illustrative examples. (i) The Zintl phase hydrides, where I find H is anionic and the formation of covalent sp2 bonds in the Al/Ga/Al-Si planes, which is a highly unusual bonding configuration for these elements. (ii) PbTe, which shows strong coupling between the longitudinal acoustic and transverse optic modes that may explain its low thermal conductivity. (iii) The double perovskites BiPbZnNbO6 …
Investigation Of The Superconducting Properties Of Niobium Radio-Frequency Cavities, Gianluigi Ciovati
Investigation Of The Superconducting Properties Of Niobium Radio-Frequency Cavities, Gianluigi Ciovati
Physics Theses & Dissertations
Radio-frequency (rf) superconducting cavities are widely used to increase the energy of a charged particle beam in particle accelerators. The maximum gradients of cavities made of bulk niobium have constantly improved over the last ten years and they are approaching the theoretical limit of the material. Nevertheless, rf tests of niobium cavities are still showing some "anomalous" losses (so-called "Q-drop"), characterized by a marked increase of the surface resistance at high rf fields, in absence of field emission. A low temperature "in-situ" baking under ultra-high vacuum has been successfully applied by several laboratories to reduce those losses and …
Understanding The Origin Of The Recovery Of Superconductivity In Halogenated Ybco Single Crystal : Atomic Structure Study, Lamine Mohamed Kollakoye Dieng
Understanding The Origin Of The Recovery Of Superconductivity In Halogenated Ybco Single Crystal : Atomic Structure Study, Lamine Mohamed Kollakoye Dieng
Dissertations
The recovery of superconductivity in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+y (YBCO) by exposure to bromine, iodine, chlorine and fluorine is a long-standing problem which has not been clearly resolved. The key question concerns the role of these halogens in the lattice. In order to shed light to this problem, we have performed multiple-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements about the Y K, Ba L3, I L3, Cu K and Br K-edges at room temperature on brominated (non-brominated) and iodinated (non-iodinated) YBCO single crystals. Our XAFS results at the Br K (brominated) and I …
