The longitudinal spin transfer DLL to Λ and Λ¯ hyperons produced in high-energy polarized proton-proton collisions is expected to be sensitive to the helicity distribution functions of strange quarks and antiquarks of the proton, and to longitudinally polarized fragmentation functions. We report an improved measurement of DLL from data obtained at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 200  GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC. The data have an approximately twelve times larger figure of merit than prior results and cover |η| < 1.2 in pseudorapidity with transverse momenta pT up to 6  GeV/c. In the forward scattering hemisphere …

The transverse spin transfer from polarized protons to Λ and Λ¯ hyperons is expected to provide sensitivity to the transversity distribution of the nucleon and to the transversely polarized fragmentation functions. We report the first measurement of the transverse spin transfer to Λ and Λ¯ along the polarization direction of the fragmenting quark, DTT, in transversely polarized proton-proton collisions at √s = 200  GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 18  pb−1 and cover the pseudorapidity range |η| < 1.2 and transverse momenta pT up to 8  GeV/c. …

We present the first measurements of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry ALL for dijets with at least one jet reconstructed within the pseudorapidity range 0.8 < η < 1.8. The dijets were measured in polarized pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy √s = 200  GeV. Values for ALL are determined for several distinct event topologies, defined by the jet pseudorapidities, and span a range of parton momentum fraction x down to x ∼ 0.01. The measured asymmetries are found to be consistent with the predictions of global analyses that incorporate the results of previous RHIC measurements. They will provide new constraints on Δg(x) in this poorly constrained region when included in …

Variance Reduction And Cluster Decomposition, Keh-Fei Liu, Jian Liang, Yi-Bo Yang

It is a common problem in lattice QCD calculation of the mass of the hadron with an annihilation channel that the signal falls off in time while the noise remains constant. In addition, the disconnected insertion calculation of the three-point function and the calculation of the neutron electric dipole moment with the θ term suffer from a noise problem due to the √V fluctuation. We identify these problems to have the same origin and the √V problem can be overcome by utilizing the cluster decomposition principle. We demonstrate this by considering the calculations of the glueball mass, the …

We report the first measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry ALL for midrapidity dijet production in polarized pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 200  GeV. The dijet cross section was measured and is shown to be consistent with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD predictions. ALL results are presented for two distinct topologies, defined by the jet pseudorapidities, and are compared to predictions from several recent NLO global analyses. The measured asymmetries, the first such correlation measurements, support those analyses that find positive gluon polarization at the level of roughly 0.2 over the region of …

We report on the results of the E06-014 experiment performed at Jefferson Lab in Hall A, where a precision measurement of the twist-3 matrix element d2 of the neutron (dn2) was conducted. The quantity dn2 represents the average color Lorentz force a struck quark experiences in a deep inelastic electron scattering event off a neutron due to its interaction with the hadronizing remnants. This color force was determined from a linear combination of the third moments of the 3He spin structure functions, g1 and g2, after nuclear corrections had …

We present the measurement of the transverse single-spin asymmetry of weak boson production in transversely polarized proton-proton collisions at √s = 500  GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The measured observable is sensitive to the Sivers function, one of the transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions, which is predicted to have the opposite sign in proton-proton collisions from that observed in deep inelastic lepton-proton scattering. These data provide the first experimental investigation of the nonuniversality of the Sivers function, fundamental to our understanding of QCD.

We report the observation of transverse polarization-dependent azimuthal correlations in charged pion pair production with the STAR experiment in p+p collisions at RHIC. These correlations directly probe quark transversity distributions. We measure signals in excess of 5 standard deviations at high transverse momenta, at high pseudorapidities η>0.5, and for pair masses around the mass of the ρ meson. This is the first direct transversity measurement in p+p collisions.

We report the first measurement of the target single-spin asymmetry, Ay, in quasielastic scattering from the inclusive reaction 3He(e,e′ ) on a 3He gas target polarized normal to the lepton scattering plane. Assuming time-reversal invariance, this asymmetry is strictly zero for one-photon exchange. A nonzero Ay can arise from the interference between the one- and two-photon exchange processes which is sensitive to the details of the substructure of the nucleon. An experiment recently completed at Jefferson Lab yielded asymmetries with high statistical precision at Q2=0.13, 0.46, and …

Spin Nematics, Valence-Bond Solids, And Spin Liquids In So(N) Quantum Spin Models On The Triangular Lattice, Ribhu K. Kaul

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We introduce a simple model of SO(N) spins with two-site interactions which is amenable to quantum Monte Carlo studies without a sign problem on nonbipartite lattices. We present numerical results for this model on the two-dimensional triangular lattice where we find evidence for a spin nematic at small N, a valence-bond solid at large N, and a quantum spin liquid at intermediate N. By the introduction of a sign-free four-site interaction, we uncover a rich phase diagram with evidence for both first-order and exotic continuous phase transitions.

Rényi Entanglement Entropy Of Critical Su(N) Spin Chains, Jonathan D'Emidio, Matthew S. Block, Ribhu K. Kaul

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present a study of the scaling behavior of the Rényi entanglement entropy (REE) in SU(N) spin chain Hamiltonians, in which all of the spins transform under the fundamental representation. These SU(N) spin chains are known to be quantum critical and described by a well known Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) nonlinear sigma model in the continuum limit. Numerical results from our lattice Hamiltonian are obtained using stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo for both closed and open boundary conditions. As expected for this 1D critical system, the REE shows a logarithmic dependence on the subsystem size with a …

Collective Edge Modes Near The Onset Of A Graphene Quantum Spin Hall State, Gunpathy Murthy, Efrat Shimshoni, H. A. Fertig

Graphene subject to a strong, tilted magnetic field exhibits an insulator-metal transition tunable by tilt angle, attributed to the transition from a canted antiferromagnetic (CAF) to a ferromagnetic (FM) bulk state at filling factor ν=0. We develop a theoretical description for the spin and valley edge textures in the two phases, and the implied evolution in the nature of edge modes through the transition. In particular, we show that the CAF has gapless neutral modes in the bulk, but supports gapped charged edge modes. At the transition to the FM state the charged edge modes become gapless and are …

We report measurements of single- and double-spin asymmetries for W± and Z/γ boson production in longitudinally polarized p+p collisions at √S=510  GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The asymmetries for W± were measured as a function of the decay lepton pseudorapidity, which provides a theoretically clean probe of the proton’s polarized quark distributions at the scale of the W mass. The results are compared to theoretical predictions, constrained by polarized deep inelastic scattering measurements, and show a preference for a sizable, positive up antiquark polarization in the range 0.05<x<0.2.
