Removal Of Anisotropic Background From Neutral Pion And Tagged Direct Photon–Hadron Correlations Of Au+Au 200 Gev Collisions, Zachary Rowan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

A reaction plane dependent event mixing technique is developed to remove the collective background from two particle correlation measurements in heavy ion collisions. The method eliminates the need for any external flow measurements and is well suited for studying the path length dependence of particle production in quark-gluon plasma. Central to mid-central, as well as in vs out-of-plane, per neutral pion trigger integrated away-side hadron yield comparisons are made. Results suggest a significant path length dependent partonic energy loss in the medium. A tagging method is also introduced to measure the direct photon yield for various collision criteria. Direct photon …

Proton-proton collision is an essential part of high energy physics, as it is a baseline for nucleus-nucleus and hadron-nucleus collisions. Quark-gluon plasma, an exotic state of strongly interacting QCD matter, is routinely produced in heavy nuclei high-energy collisions. Charmonium, the bound states of $c\bar{c}$ produced at the early stages of collisions, are nice probes to examine the properties of matter through which they pass. The differential cross-sections of inclusive $\psi(2S)$ in pp collisions at energies of $\sqrt{s}$ = 7, 8 and 13 TeV have been studied. PYTHIA 8.1 event generator is used for the simulation of data. The differential cross-section …

We report first measurements of e+e pair production in the mass region 0.4 < Mee < 2.6  GeV/c2 at low transverse momentum (pT < 0.15  GeV/c) in noncentral Au+Au collisions at √sNN = 200  GeV and U+U collisions at √sNN = 193  GeV. Significant enhancement factors, expressed as ratios of data over known hadronic contributions, are observed in the 40%–80% centrality of these collisions. The excess yields peak distinctly at low pT with a width (√⟨p2T⟩) between 40 and 60  MeV/c. The absolute cross section of …

We report measurements of the nuclear modification factor RCP for charged hadrons as well as identified π+(−), K+(−), and p(p¯) for Au + Au collision energies of √sNN = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, and 62.4 GeV. We observe a clear high-pT net suppression in central collisions at 62.4 GeV for charged hadrons which evolves smoothly to a large net enhancement at lower energies. This trend is driven by the evolution of the pion spectra but is also very similar for the kaon spectra. While the magnitude of the proton RCP …

Rapidity-odd directed-flow measurements at midrapidity are presented for Λ, Λ¯, K±, K0s, and ϕ at √sNN = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, and 200 GeV in Au + Au collisions recorded by the Solenoidal Tracker detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These measurements greatly expand the scope of data available to constrain models with differing prescriptions for the equation of state of quantum chromodynamics. Results show good sensitivity for testing a picture where flow is assumed to be imposed before hadron formation and the observed particles are assumed to form …

The quark-gluon plasma

At the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island in New York (the only major research accelerator functioning in the US) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland, heavy atoms, stripped of most or all of their electrons, are collided with energies approaching 100-1000 GeV per nucleon. Traveling at nearly the speed of light, these heavy ions are Lorentz contracted into pancake shapes in the laboratory frame of reference and, consequently, have very large quark and gluon densities within the constituent protons and neutrons. The energy density in the …

The differential production cross sections of B± mesons are measured via the exclusive decay channels B±→J/ψK±→μ+μ-K± as a function of transverse momentum in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy sNN=5.02 TeV per nucleon pair with the CMS detector at the LHC. The pp(Pb-Pb) data set used for this analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 28.0 pb-1 (351 μb-1). The measurement is performed in the B± meson transverse momentum range of 7 to 50 GeV/c, in the rapidity interval |y|<2.4. In this kinematic range, a strong suppression of the production cross section by about a factor of 2 is observed in the Pb-Pb system in comparison to the expectation from pp reference data. These results are found to be roughly compatible with theoretical calculations incorporating beauty quark diffusion and energy loss in a quark-gluon plasma. © 2017 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration. The STAR Collaboration reports the measurement of semi-inclusive distributions of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum hadron trigger, in central and peripheral Au + Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. Charged jets are reconstructed with the anti-kT algorithm for jet radii R between 0.2 and 0.5 and with low infrared cutoff of track constituents (pT > 0.2 GeV/c). A novel mixed-event technique is used to correct the large uncorrelated background present in heavy ion collisions. Corrected recoil jet distributions are reported at midrapidity, for charged-jet transverse momentum pchT,jet < GeV/c. Comparison is made to similar measurements for Pb + Pb collisions at √s = …

We report the first dijet transverse momentum asymmetry measurements from Au + Au and pp collisions at RHIC. The two highest-energy back-to-back jets reconstructed from fragments with transverse momenta above 2  GeV/c display a significantly higher momentum imbalance in heavy-ion collisions than in the pp reference. When reexamined with correlated soft particles included, we observe that these dijets then exhibit a unique new feature—momentum balance is restored to that observed in pp for a jet resolution parameter of R = 0.4, while rebalancing is not attained with a smaller value of R = 0.2.

We present high precision measurements of elliptic flow near midrapidity (|y| < 1.0) for multistrange hadrons and ϕ meson as a function of centrality and transverse momentum in Au + Au collisions at center of mass energy √sNN = 200  GeV. We observe that the transverse momentum dependence of ϕ and Ω υ2 is similar to that of π and p, respectively, which may indicate that the heavier strange quark flows as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. This observation constitutes a clear piece of evidence for the development of partonic collectivity in heavy-ion collisions at the top …

Event-by-event fluctuations of the multiplicities of inclusive charged particles and photons at forward rapidity in Au + Au collisions at √s(NN) = 200 GeV have been studied. The dominant contribution to such fluctuations is expected to come from correlated production of charged and neutral pions. We search for evidence of dynamical fluctuations of different physical origins. Observables constructed out of moments of multiplicities are used as measures of fluctuations. Mixed events and model calculations are used as base lines. Results are compared to the dynamical net-charge fluctuations measured in the same acceptance. A nonzero statistically significant signal of dynamical fluctuations …

Local parity-odd domains are theorized to form inside a quark-gluon plasma which has been produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The local parity-odd domains manifest themselves as charge separation along the magnetic field axis via the chiral magnetic effect. The experimental observation of charge separation has previously been reported for heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energies. In this Letter, we present the results of the beam-energy dependence of the charge correlations in Au+Au collisions at midrapidity for center-of-mass energies of 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, and 62.4 GeV from the STAR experiment. After background subtraction, the signal gradually reduces with …

We study the beam-energy and system-size dependence of ϕ meson production (using the hadronic decay mode ϕK + K ) by comparing the new results from Cu + Cu collisions and previously reported Au + Au collisions at √sNN = 62.4 and 200 GeV measured in the STAR experiment at RHIC. Data presented in this Letter are from mid-rapidity ( | y | < 0.5 ) for 0.4 < PT < 5 GeV /c . At a given beam energy, the transverse momentum distributions for ϕ mesons are observed to be similar in yield and shape for Cu + Cu and Au + …

Yields for J=c production in Cu þ Cu collisions at ffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffi sNN p ¼ 200 GeV have been measured over the rapidity range jyj < 2:2 and compared with results in p þ p and Au þ Au collisions at the same energy. The Cu þ Cu data offer greatly improved precision over existing Au þ Au data for J=c production in collisions with small to intermediate numbers of participants, in the range where the quark-gluon plasma transition threshold is predicted to lie. Cold nuclear matter estimates based on ad hoc fits to d þ Au data describe the Cu þ Cu data up to Npart 50, corresponding to a Bjorken energy density of at least 1:5 GeV=fm3.
