Developing A Uas-Deployable Methane Sensor Using Low-Cost Modular Open-Source Components, Gavin Demali Jan 2020

Developing A Uas-Deployable Methane Sensor Using Low-Cost Modular Open-Source Components, Gavin Demali

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project aimed to develop a methane sensor for deployment on an unmanned aerial system (UAS), or drone, platform. This design is centered around low cost, commercially available modular hardware components and open source software libraries. Once successfully developed, this system was deployed at the Bath Nature Preserve in Bath Township, Summit County Ohio in order to detect any potential on site fugitive methane emissions in the vicinity of the oil and gas infrastructure present. The deliverables of this project (i.e. the data collected at BNP) will be given to the land managers there to better inform future management and …

Monitoring Ambient Laboratory Conditions With A Raspberry Pi, Joshua Boman Aug 2019

Monitoring Ambient Laboratory Conditions With A Raspberry Pi, Joshua Boman

Physics Capstone Projects

Precise experimental devices and measurements can be sensitive to changing physical conditions in the lab. The purpose of this research was to develop a standardized computer automated package to monitor and record changes in laboratory conditions, including ambient temperature, atmospheric pressure, relative humidity, light intensity, motion, and power outages. The computer-interfaced device was based around an inexpensive Raspberry Pi microcomputer and commercially available sensors. The Raspberry Pi uploads the sensor data to a file used by LabVIEW to further analyze, plot and display the calibrated sensor data in real time and trigger alarms. This capability allows the Material Physics Research …

New Microclimate Monitoring Method And Data Process For Investigating Environmental Conditions In Complex Urban Contexts, Ilaria Pigliautile, Veronica Lucia Castaldo, Anna Laura Pisello Sep 2018

New Microclimate Monitoring Method And Data Process For Investigating Environmental Conditions In Complex Urban Contexts, Ilaria Pigliautile, Veronica Lucia Castaldo, Anna Laura Pisello

International Building Physics Conference 2018

The rapid urbanization of the last century coupled with local climate change imputable to anthropogenic actions triggered a huge research effort aimed at investigating urban microclimate. Typically, cities present a variety of microclimates due to the internal variation of their landscapes in terms of morphology, surfaces properties, presence of greenery, etc. Location-specific microclimate conditions affect both (i) building energy needs and (ii) citizens’ quality of life. For these reasons, a small-scale analysis from the citizen perspective with high-time-resolution environmental data is required. Recent studies tried to reach that level of precision by using remote sensing, movable observational transects or dense …

Experimental Investigations Of Wooden Beam Ends In Masonry With Internal Insulation: Results Contrasting Three Years Of The Experiment, Pavel Kopecký, Kamil Staněk, Michal Bureš, Jan Richter, Jan Tywoniak Sep 2018

Experimental Investigations Of Wooden Beam Ends In Masonry With Internal Insulation: Results Contrasting Three Years Of The Experiment, Pavel Kopecký, Kamil Staněk, Michal Bureš, Jan Richter, Jan Tywoniak

International Building Physics Conference 2018

This paper deals with hygro-thermal performance of wooden beam ends embedded in masonry walls with lime-cement plaster applied on the external side. Three different insulation systems are attached on the internal side of masonry. The real scale experiment has been monitored for three consecutive years. Microclimatic conditions in joist pockets were assessed by VTT mold growth index. The paper shows the influence of two changes of boundary conditions on the microclimate in joist pockets. First, moisture load on the internal side of building enclosure was increased (24 °C, 60 % in winter 2016/2017 instead 20 °C, 50 % in winter …

High-Frequency Rapid B-Mode Ultrasound Imaging For Real-Time Monitoring Of Lesion Formation And Gas Body Activity During High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Ablation, Madhu Sudhan Reddy Gudur, Ronald Kumon, Yun Zhou, Cheri X. Deng Sep 2012

High-Frequency Rapid B-Mode Ultrasound Imaging For Real-Time Monitoring Of Lesion Formation And Gas Body Activity During High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Ablation, Madhu Sudhan Reddy Gudur, Ronald Kumon, Yun Zhou, Cheri X. Deng

Abstract:

The goal of this study was to examine the ability of high-frame-rate, high-resolution imaging to monitor tissue necrosis and gas-body activities formed during high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) application. Ex vivo porcine cardiac tissue specimens (n = 24) were treated with HIFU exposure (4.33 MHz, 77 to 130 Hz pulse repetition frequency (PRF), 25 to 50% duty cycle, 0.2 to 1 s, 2600 W/cm2). RF data from Bmode ultrasound imaging were obtained before, during, and after HIFU exposure at a frame rate ranging from 77 to 130 Hz using an ultrasound imaging system with a center frequency of 55 MHz. …

Development Of Membrane Film Fiber Optic Based Sensors For The Remote Monitoring Of The Quality Of Surface And Groundwater, Leonidas G. Bachas Aug 1992

Development Of Membrane Film Fiber Optic Based Sensors For The Remote Monitoring Of The Quality Of Surface And Groundwater, Leonidas G. Bachas

KWRRI Research Reports

The objective of this study was the development of chromo- and fluoroionophores and their subsequent use in sensors capable of surface and groundwater monitoring. Several reagents (modified crown ethers and porphyrins) were synthesized based on principles of chemical recognition and used for metal and pH sensing. The modified crown ether reagents include a chromogenic or fluorogenic group. The selectivity of these reagents is controlled by the size of the crown ether ring and the type of the chromogenic or fluorogenic side-arm. In addition, a fluorogenic crown ether was synthesized that incorporates a fluorogenic side-arm and a perfluorinated carbon chain. The …
