We studied three-dimensional angular distributions and longitudinal momentum spectra of electrons ejected in transfer plus ionization (TI), i.e., the ejection of one and the capture of a second target electron, for ion-helium collisions. We observe a pronounced structure strongly focused opposite to the projectile beam direction, which we associate with a new correlated TI mechanism proposed recently. This process contributes significantly to the total cross sections over a broad range of perturbations η, even at η as large as 0.5, where uncorrelated TI mechanisms were thought to be dominant.

We have studied mutual projectile and target ionization in 1-MeV/amu N4+ and N5++He collisions in kinematically complete experiments by measuring the momenta of the recoil ion and both ejected electrons in coincidence with the charge-changed projectiles. By means of four-particle Dalitz plots, in which multiple differential cross sections are presented as a function of the momenta of all four particles, experimental spectra are compared with theoretical results from various models. The experimental data are qualitatively reproduced by higher-order calculations, where good agreement is achieved for N5++He collisions, while some discrepancies persist for N4++He …

We discuss the ionization of aligned hydrogen molecules into their ionic ground state by 200 eV electrons. Using a reaction microscope, the complete electron scattering kinematics is imaged over a large solid angle. Simultaneously, the molecular alignment is derived from postcollision dissociation of the residual ion. It is found that the ionization cross section is maximized for small angles between the internuclear axis and the momentum transfer. Fivefold differential cross sections (5DCSs) reveal subtle differences in the scattering process for the distinct alignments. We compare our observations with theoretical 5DCSs obtained with an adapted molecular three-body distorted wave model that …

In a recent article, McGovern [Phys. Rev. APLRAAN1050-294710.1103/PhysRevA. 81.042704 81, 042704 (2010)] suggested that the normalization of our measured fully differential cross section for ionization of helium by Au53+ needs to be checked. In this comment we confirm that the normalization of the published data is correct. Furthermore, we point out that, for a conclusive comparison between experiment and theory, an accurate inclusion of the experimental resolution using correct experimental parameters in the calculation is important.

In the strong field molecular tunneling ionization theory of Tong et al. [Phys. Rev. A 66, 033402 (2002)], the ionization rate depends on the asymptotic wave function of the molecular orbital from which the electron is removed. The orbital wave functions obtained from standard quantum chemistry packages in general are not good enough in the asymptotic region. Here we construct a one-electron model potential for several linear molecules using density functional theory. We show that the asymptotic wave function can be improved with an iteration method and after one iteration accurate asymptotic wave functions and structure parameters are determined. With …

Laser-induced electron recollisions are fundamental to many strong field phenomena in atoms and molecules. Using the recently developed quantitative rescattering theory, we demonstrate that the nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) of atoms by lasers can be obtained quantitatively in terms of inelastic collisions of the target ions with the free returning electrons where the latter are explicitly given by a spectrum-characterized wave packet. Using argon atoms as target, we calculated the NSDI yield including contributions from direct (e,2e) electron-impact ionization and electron-impact excitation accompanied by subsequent field ionization. We further investigate the dependence of total NSDI on the carrier-envelope phase of …

A nonperturbative close-coupling technique is used to calculate differential cross sections for the electron-impact ionization of H2 at an energy of 35.4 eV. Our approach allows cross sections for any orientation of the molecule with respect to the incident electron beam to be analyzed. New features in the resulting cross sections are found compared with the case where the molecular orientation is averaged, and also with cross sections for He at equivalent electron kinematics. When averaged over all possible molecular orientations, good agreement is found with recent experimental results.

Signature Of Ericson Fluctuations In Helium Inelastic Scattering Cross Sections Near The Double Ionization Threshold, Junliang Xu, Anh-Thu Le, Toru Morishita, C. D. Lin

We calculated the inelastic electron impact excitation cross sections of He⁺ by electrons for a model helium atom to examine the onset of the signature of quantum chaotic scattering in this simple system. We find Ericson fluctuations (EF) in the calculated inelastic scattering cross sections only when the impact energies lie within about 0.21 eV below the double ionization threshold. We also discuss the stringent requirements and the proper methods for analyzing the inelastic scattering cross sections in order to observe EF experimentally.

We have performed experimental and theoretical studies of double ionization of helium by 6 MeV proton impact using a recently developed tool, four-particle Dalitz plots [Schulz et al., J. Phys. B 22, 3091 (2007)] which enable the representation of multiple differential cross sections as a function of all four fragments in a single spectrum without loss of any part of the total cross section. As a result, the relative importance of the various interactions between the fragments can be studied in great detail. Comparisons of experimental data with theoretical first-order calculations and simulations for the higher-order (TS-2) process show that …

Analysis Of Two-Dimensional High-Energy Photoelectron Momentum Distributions In The Single Ionization Of Atoms By Intense Laser Pulses, Zhangjin Chen, Toru Morishita, Anh-Thu Le, C. D. Lin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We analyzed the two-dimensional (2D) electron momentum distributions of high-energy photoelectrons of atoms in an intense laser field using the second-order strong field approximation (SFA2). The SFA2 accounts for the rescattering of the returning electron with the target ion to first order and its validity is established by comparing with results obtained by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for short pulses. By analyzing the SFA2 theory, we confirmed that the yield along the back rescattered ridge in the 2D momentum spectra can be interpreted as due to the elastic scattering in the backward directions by the returning electron wave packet. …

Triple-Differential Cross Sections For Target Ionization With Simultaneous Projectile Detachment In 200-Kev H⁻ + He Collisions, T. Ferger, Michael Schulz, Daniel Fischer, B. Najjari, R. Moshammer, J. D. Ullrich Oct 2007

Triple-Differential Cross Sections For Target Ionization With Simultaneous Projectile Detachment In 200-Kev H⁻ + He Collisions, T. Ferger, Michael Schulz, Daniel Fischer, B. Najjari, R. Moshammer, J. D. Ullrich

We have performed a kinematically complete experiment for target ionization with simultaneous projectile detachment (TIPD) in 200-keV H + He collisions. From the data we extracted triple-differential cross sections (TDCSs) for each electron separately. These TDCSs closely resemble corresponding data for single ionization by charged-particle impact. Surprisingly, the contributions from higher-order processes to TIPD, proceeding through two independent interactions of each electron with the core of the respective other collision partner, are found to be somewhat larger than the first-order process proceeding through the electron-electron interaction.

Recent multiply differential experimental data taken with reaction microscopes severely challenge predictions of quantum mechanical few-body models. Here, we report on a thorough analysis of all known possible experimental resolution effects and their influence on the extracted cross sections. Using a Monte Carlo event generator to simulate true events on the basis of quantum calculations allows us to consistently incorporate all aspects of the experimental resolution of the reaction microscope. We study the effect of the instrumental function in single ionization of helium by 3.6 MeV/u Au53+ and 100 MeV/u C6+ ions and find it to significantly modify the simulated …

Coincidences between recoil ions-ejected electrons and recoil ions-scattered projectiles have been used to study the kinematics of electron and positron impact ionization. Triply Differential (TDCS) data for 500 eV positron and electron impact on Ar are presented here as function of scattering angle for a given range of energy losses. Binary and recoil interactions can be distinguished allowing us to determine the relative intensity between those interactions. Preliminary integration of the data indicate an enhancement of the binary region for positron interaction while for electron impact the intensity of the recoil and binary interactions is comparable.

We present experimental and theoretical results for the electron-impact-induced ionization of ground-state helium atoms. Using a high-sensitivity toroidal electron spectrometer, we measured cross-section ratios for transitions leading to the first three excited states of the residual helium ion relative to the transition leaving the ion in the ground state. Measurements were performed for both symmetric- and asymmetric-energy-sharing kinematics. By presenting results as a ratio, a direct comparison can be made between theoretical and experimental predictions without recourse to normalization. The experimental data are compared to theoretical predictions employing various first-order models and a second-order hybrid distorted-wave + convergent R matrix …

Differential Electron Emission For Single And Multiple Ionization Of Argon By 500 Ev Positrons, Jared M. Gavin, Robert D. Dubois, O. G. De Lucio

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Triply differential electron emission cross sections are measured for single ionization of argon by 500 eV positrons. Data are presented for coincidences between projectiles scattered into angles of 3° and electrons with emission energies less than 10 eV that are observed between 45 and 135° along the beam direction. For interpretation, these are compared to cosine squared representations of the binary and recoil lobes which are convoluted over experimental parameters. Singly differential electron emission data for double and triple ionization by positrons are also presented.

Two-dimensional (2D) electron momentum distributions and energy spectra for multiphoton ionization of atoms by intense laser pulses, calculated by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) for different wavelengths and intensities, are compared to those predicted by the strong-field approximation (SFA). It is shown that the momentum spectra at low energies between the TDSE and SFA are quite different and the differences arise largely from the absence of a long-range Coulomb interaction in the SFA. We further found that the low-energy 2D momentum spectra from the TDSE exhibit ubiquitous fanlike features where the number of stripes is due to a single …

The process of electron scattering from heavy target atoms is of considerable interest due to the enhanced role of relativistic effects and distortion of the electron trajectories resulting from the large value of nuclear charge. Here we present (e,2e) ionization measurements and distorted-wave Born approximation calculations for the scattering of spin-polarized electrons from xenon atoms in which the fine-structure levels of the residual ion are resolved. Comparison of measurements performed using a high-sensitivity toroidal analyzer spectrometer with the predictions of sophisticated calculations provide an improved understanding of the ionization dynamics of heavy target atoms and the treatment of electron exchange …

One of the dominant systematic effects that shift resonance lines in high-precision measurements of two-photon transitions is the dynamic (ac) Stark shift. For suitable laser frequencies, the ac Stark shift acquires an imaginary part which corresponds to the rate of resonant one-photon ionization of electrons into a continuum state. At the current level of spectroscopic accuracy, the underlying time-dependent quantum dynamics governing the atomic two-photon excitation process must be well understood, and related considerations are the subject of the present paper. In order to illustrate the basic mechanisms in the transient regime, we investigate an analytically solvable model scenario for …

Evidence Of Two-Center Interference In High-Order Harmonic Generation From Co₂, Anh-Thu Le, Xiao-Min Tong, C. D. Lin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Two recent pump-probe experiments on the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from partially aligned CO₂ molecules have shown that the HHG yields versus the ionization rates as functions of the pump-probe delay time exhibit inverted modulation. The inversion has been attributed to the quantum interference in the recombination process from the two oxygen centers. Using the Lewenstein model to calculate HHG from fixed CO₂ molecules and taking into account the partial alignment of the molecules versus the time delay, we interpret that the inversion is due to the degree of overlap between the partially aligned molecules and the angular dependence of …

Mutual Ionization In 200-Kev H⁻+ He Collisions, T. Ferger, Daniel Fischer, Michael Schulz, R. Moshammer, A. B. Voitkiv, B. Najjari, J. Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We studied mutual ionization in 200-keV H-+He collisions in a kinematically complete experiment by measuring the fully momentum-analyzed recoil ions and both active electrons in coincidence. Comparison of the data to our calculations, based on various theoretical models, show that mutual ionization proceeds predominantly through the interaction between both electrons. The post-collision interaction between the outgoing ejected electrons as well as higher order processes involving the interaction between the core of both collision partners are also important.

Signature Of Chaos In High-Lying Doubly Excited States Of The Helium Atom, Anh-Thu Le, Toru Morishita, X.-M. Tong, C. D. Lin

We examined nearest-neighbor spacing (NNS) statistics in doubly excited states of helium near the double ionization threshold. Using the Brody parameter q to measure the NNS distribution between the regular Poisson distribution (q=0) and the chaotic Wigner distribution (q=1), we showed that for levels near the N=20 threshold of He⁺, or at about 0.13eV below the double ionization threshold, the NNS distribution has q=0.66. The result shows the slow approach of the NNS of helium energy levels towards the Wigner distribution vs the excitation energy. Using an s-wave model where the angular momentum of each electron is restricted to zero, …

The dissociation of H2 in singly ionizing collisions with fast protons was analyzed using channel-selective low-energy electron spectra. Dissociative and nondissociative single ionization of H2 by 6MeV proton impact was described in a kinematically by determining momentum vectors of electron and H+ fragment of H2+ target ion, respectively. The electron spectra exhibited role of autoionization of doubly and singly excited states of H2. The doubly and singly excited states of H2 involve coupling between electronic and nuclear motion of molecule.

Recently, three-dimensional imaging of the ejected electrons following 100  MeV/amu C6+ single ionization of helium led to the observation of a new structure not predicted by theory [M. Schulz et al., Nature (London) 422, 48 (2003)]. Instead of the usual “recoil lobe” centered on the momentum-transfer axis, a ring-shaped structure centered on the beam axis was observed. New measurements at 2  MeV/amu exhibit a similar structure, which is now predicted by theory. We argue that the same theory failed at 100  MeV/amu because the faster projectiles probe distances much closer to the nucleus, where our multiple-scattering model is expected …

A kinematically complete experiment for simultaneous ionization of a projectile and target has been performed for 3.6 MeV/u C2+ on He collisions measuring the final vector momenta of the He1+ recoil ion and of two electrons (projectile, target) in coincidence with the emerging C3+ projectile. The feasibility of an event-by-event separation of the various reaction channels, among them the ionization of C2+ by the interaction with a quasifree target electron, is demonstrated in agreement with six-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo calculations, paving the way to kinematically complete electron-ion scattering experiments.

Vector momentum distributions of two electrons created in double ionization of Ar by 25 fs, 0.25PW/cm2 laser pulses at 795 nm have been measured using a “reaction microscope.” At this intensity, where nonsequential ionization dominates, distinct correlation patterns are observed in the two-electron momentum distributions. A kinematical analysis of these spectra within the classical “recollision model” revealed an (e,2e)-like process and excitation with subsequent tunneling of the second electron as two different ionization mechanisms. This allows a qualitative separation of the two mechanisms demonstrating that excitation-tunneling is the dominant contribution to the total double ionization yield.

The dynamics of Neon double ionization by 25 fs, 1.0 PW/cm2 laser pulses at 795 nm has been studied in a many particle coincidence experiment. The momentum vectors of all ejected atomic fragments (electrons and ions) have been measured using combined electron and recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy. Electron emission spectra for double and single ionization will be discussed. In both processes the mean electron energies differ considerably and high energetic electrons with energies of more than 120 eV have been observed for double ionization. The experimental results are in qualitative agreement with the rescattering model.

In this paper, control of the evolution of a two electron wave packet through the application of a static electric field is demonstrated. Specifically, application of a small electric field is used to produce pulsed autoionization events, the timing of which can be controlled on a picosecond time scale. The technique is demonstrated by exciting calcium atoms using a short-pulsed laser to the 4p3/219d doubly excited state, which is energy degenerate with the 4p1/2nk stark states. Evolution of the resultant wave packet is monitored through the application of a second short laser pulse, which stimulates the …

When exposed to intense light of ~580 nm, the ground state of K shifts up in energy, passing through two photon resonances with Rydberg states, and finally crossing the two-photon ionization limit. We have used laser pulses of varying duration to study the nature of the population transfer from the ground state to the excited state due to the intensity-tuned resonances encountered during the rising edge of the pulse. A dynamic Floquet approach in which the resonances are treated as avoided crossings of the Floquet energy levels is used to model the population transfer and gives excellent agreement with the …
