Parity Violation In The N + 3he → 3h + P Reaction: Resonance Approach, Vladimir Gudkov Dec 2010

Parity Violation In The N + 3he → 3h + P Reaction: Resonance Approach, Vladimir Gudkov

Faculty Publications

The method based on microscopic theory of nuclear reactions has been applied for the analysis of parityviolatingeffects in few-body systems. Different parity-violating and parity-conserving asymmetries and theirdependence on neutron energy have been estimated for the n + 3He → 3H + p reaction. The estimated effectsare in a good agreement with available exact calculations.

Single- and double-differential inclusive dijet cross sections in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 374 pb-1. The measurement was performed at large values of the photon virtuality, Q2, between 125 and 20 000 GeV2. The jets were reconstructed with the kT cluster algorithm in the Breit reference frame and selected by requiring their transverse energies in the Breit frame, ET,Bjet, to be larger than 8 GeV. In addition, the invariant mass of the dijet system, Mjj, was required to be greater than 20 GeV. The cross sections are …

Magnetic measurements have been carried out on the Mn-intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide Mn0.25Ti1+yS2. The material, which contained a concentration y≈0.1 of excess intercalated Ti, exhibited paramagnetic behavior at high temperatures with an effective moment per Mn ion of µeff=6.07 ± 0.23 µB, which shows that the system comprises localized Mn2+ moments. A Curie-Weiss temperature ΘCW=-26 ± 1 K indicated that antiferromagnetic interactions were dominant. Deviation from Curie-Weiss behavior below 100 K signaled the formation of antiferromagnetically correlated clusters. Bifurcation of the zero-fieldcooled and field-cooled magnetizations below 20 K …

Systematic Approach To Electrostatically Induced 2d Crystallization Of Nanoparticles At Liquid Interfaces, Sumit Kewalramani, Suntao Wang, Yuan Lin, Huong Giang Nguyen, Qian Wang, Masafumi Fukuto, Lin Yang

Faculty Publications

We report an experimental demonstration of a strategy for inducing two-dimensional (2D)crystallization of charged nanoparticles on oppositely charged fluid interfaces. This strategy aims to maximize the interfacial adsorption of nanoparticles, and hence their lateral packing density, by utilizing a combination of weakly charged particles and a high surface charge density on the planar interface. In order to test this approach, we investigated the assembly of cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) on positively charged lipid monolayers at the aqueous solution surface, by means of in situX-ray scattering measurements at the liquid–vapor interface. Theassembly was studied as a function of the solution …

Modeling-Free Bounds On Nonrenormalizable Isotropic Lorentz And Cpt Violation In Qed, Brett David Altschul Oct 2010

Modeling-Free Bounds On Nonrenormalizable Isotropic Lorentz And Cpt Violation In Qed, Brett David Altschul

Faculty Publications

The strongest bounds on some forms of Lorentz and CPT violation come from astrophysical data, and placing such bounds may require understanding and modeling distant sources of radiation. However, it is also desirable to have bounds that do not rely on these kinds of detailed models. Bounds that do not rely on any modeling of astrophysical objects may be derived both from laboratory experiments and certain kinds of astrophysical observations. The strongest such bounds on isotropic modifications of electron, positron, and photon dispersion relations of the form E^2 = p^2 + m^ 2 + epsilon p^3 come from data on …

Measurement And Modeling Of Infrared Nonlinear Absorption Coefficients And Laser-Induced Damage Thresholds In Ge And Gasb, Torrey J. Wagner, Matthew J. Bohn, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., L. P. Gonzales, J. M. Murray, K. L. Schepler, S. Guha

Faculty Publications

Using a simultaneous fitting technique to extract nonlinear absorption coefficients from data at two pulse widths, we measure two-photon and free-carrier absorption coefficients for Ge and GaSb at 2.05 and 2.5 µm for the first time, to our knowledge. Results agreed well with published theory. Single-shot damage thresholds were also measured at 2.5 µm and agreed well with modeled thresholds using experimentally determined parameters including nonlinear absorption coefficients and temperature dependent linear absorption. The damage threshold for a single-layer Al2O3 anti-reflective coating on Ge was 55% or 35% lower than the uncoated threshold for picosecond or nanosecond …

Beauty production in deep inelastic scattering with events in which a muon and a jet are observed in the final state has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 114 pb-1. The fraction of events with beauty quarks in the data was determined using the distribution of the transverse momentum of the muon relative to the jet. The cross section for beauty production was measured in the kinematic range of photon virtuality, Q2>2 GeV2, and inelasticity, 0.05

Radical Spin Helix In Two-Dimensional Electron Systems With Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, Valeriy A. Slipko Sep 2010

Radical Spin Helix In Two-Dimensional Electron Systems With Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, Valeriy A. Slipko

Faculty Publications

We suggest a long-lived spin-polarization structure, a radial spin helix, and study its relaxation dynamics. For this purpose, starting with a system of equations for spin-polarization density, we find its general solution in the axially symmetric case. It is demonstrated that the radial spin helix of a certain period relaxes slower than homogeneous spin polarization and plain spin helix. Importantly, the spin polarization at the center of the radial spin helix stays almost unchanged at short times. At longer times, when the initial nonexponential relaxation region ends, the relaxation of the radial spin helix occurs with the same time constant …

Testing Photons' Bose-Einstein Statistics With Compton Scattering, Brett David Altschul Sep 2010

Testing Photons' Bose-Einstein Statistics With Compton Scattering, Brett David Altschul

Faculty Publications

It is an empirical question whether photons always obey Bose-Einstein statistics, but devising and interpreting experimental tests of photon statistics can be a challenge. The nonrelativistic cross section for Compton scattering illustrates how a small admixture ν of wrong-sign statistics leads to a loss of gauge invariance; there is a large anomalous amplitude for scattering timelike photons. Nevertheless, one can interpret the observed transparency of the solar wind plasma at low frequencies as a bound ν<10−25 if Lorentz symmetry is required. If there is instead a universal preferred frame, the bound is ν<10−14, still strong compared with …

Memristive Adaptive Filters, T. Driscoll, J. Quinn, S. Klein, H. T. Kim, B. J. Kim, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, M. Di Ventra, D. N. Basov

Faculty Publications

Using the memristive properties of vanadium dioxide, we experimentally demonstrate an adaptive filter by placing a memristor into an LC contour. This circuit reacts to the application of select frequency signals by sharpening the quality factor of its resonant response, and thus “learns” according to the input waveform. The proposed circuit employs only analog passive elements, and may find applications in biologically inspired processing and information storage. We also extend the learning-circuit framework mathematically to include memory-reactive elements, such as memcapacitors and meminductors, and show how this expands the functionality of adaptive memory filters.

A combination is presented of the inclusive deep inelastic cross sections measured by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations in neutral and charged current unpolarised e±p scattering at HERA during the period 1994-2000. The data span six orders of magnitude in negative four-momentum-transfer squared, Q2, and in Bjorken x. The combination method used takes the correlations of systematic uncertainties into account, resulting in an improved accuracy. The combined data are the sole input in a NLO QCD analysis which determines a new set of parton distributions, HERAPDF1.0, with small experimental uncertainties. This set includes an estimate of the model and parametrisation …

QUEST is a part of the SciDAC project on next generation multi-scale quantum simulation software for strongly correlated materials. It is a Fortran 90/95 package that implements the determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) method for simulation of magnetic, superconducting, and metal-insulator transitions in model Hamiltonians. In this paper, we show how QUEST is capable of treating lattices of unprecedentedly large sizes and how this can be fruitful in the study of the physics of trapped fermionic system, in the development of more efficient solvers for Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) and as a tool to test and, in the future, …

For the first time, differential inclusive-jet cross sections have been measured in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering using the anti-kT and SIScone algorithms. The measurements were made for boson virtualities Q2>125 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1 and the jets were identified in the Breit frame. The performance and suitability of the jet algorithms for their use in hadron-like reactions were investigated by comparing the measurements to those performed with the kT algorithm. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations give a good description of the measurements. Measurements of the ratios of cross sections …

Diode Properties Of Nanotube Networks, David D. Allred, Bryan Hicks, Stephanie Getty Jun 2010

Diode Properties Of Nanotube Networks, David D. Allred, Bryan Hicks, Stephanie Getty

Faculty Publications

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) were prepared using iron catalysts deposited by indirect evaporation on silicon substrate covered with 500 nm-thick thermal oxide. Diode SWCNT devices have been fabricated using Au and Al, as the asymmetric metal contacts, and a random network of metallic and semiconducting nanotubes as the device channel. No effort was made to align the SWCNTs or to eliminate metallic nanotubes in our devices. Asymmetric voltage-current behavior was seen. Current rectification was observed in the source-drain bias range of -3 V to +3 V. Rectification was somewhat surprising since, although metallic tubes are in the minority (~ 1/3), …

Laboratory Bounds On Electron Lorentz Violation, Brett David Altschul May 2010

Laboratory Bounds On Electron Lorentz Violation, Brett David Altschul

Faculty Publications

Violations of Lorentz boost symmetry in the electron and photon sectors can be constrained by studying several different high-energy phenomenon. Although they may not lead to the strongest bounds numerically, measurements made in terrestrial laboratories produce the most reliable results. Laboratory bounds can be based on observations of synchrotron radiation, as well as the observed absences of vacuum Cerenkov radiation. Using measurements of synchrotron energy losses at LEP and the survival of TeV photons, we place new bounds on the three electron Lorentz violation coefficients c(TJ ), at the 3 x 10-13 to 6 x 10-15 levels.

Solid-State Memcapacitive System With Negative And Diverging Capacitance, J. Martinez-Rincon, M. Di Ventra, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr May 2010

Solid-State Memcapacitive System With Negative And Diverging Capacitance, J. Martinez-Rincon, M. Di Ventra, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr

Faculty Publications

We suggest a possible realization of a solid-state memory capacitive (memcapacitive) system. Our approach relies on the slow polarization rate of a medium between plates of a regular capacitor. To achieve this goal, we consider a multilayer structure embedded in a capacitor. The multilayer structure is formed by metallic layers separated by an insulator so that nonlinear electronic transport (tunneling) between the layers can occur. The suggested memcapacitor shows hysteretic charge-voltage and capacitance-voltage curves, and both negative and diverging capacitance within certain ranges of the field. This proposal can be easily realized experimentally and indicates the possibility of information storage …

Structure Maps For Hcp Metals From First-Principles Calculations, Gus L. W. Hart, Ohad Levy, Stefano Curtarolo

Faculty Publications

The ability to predict the existence and crystal type of ordered structures of materials from their components is a major challenge of current materials research. Empirical methods use experimental data to construct structure maps and make predictions based on clustering of simple physical parameters. Their usefulness depends on the availability of reliable data over the entire parameter space. Recent development of high-throughput methods opens the possibility to enhance these empirical structure maps by ab initio calculations in regions of the parameter space where the experimental evidence is lacking or not well characterized. In this paper we construct enhanced maps for …

Cluster Solver For Dynamical Mean-Field Theory With Linear Scaling In Inverse Temperature, Ehsan Khatami, C. Lee, Z. Bai, R. Scalettar, M. Jarrell

Faculty Publications

Dynamical mean-field theory and its cluster extensions provide a very useful approach for examining phase transitions in model Hamiltonians and, in combination with electronic structure theory, constitute powerful methods to treat strongly correlated materials. The key advantage to the technique is that, unlike competing real-space methods, the sign problem is well controlled in the Hirsch-Fye (HF) quantum Monte Carlo used as an exact cluster solver. However, an important computational bottleneck remains; the HF method scales as the cube of the inverse temperature, β. This often makes simulations at low temperatures extremely challenging. We present here a method based on determinant …

Quantum Criticality Due To Incipient Phase Separation In The Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model, Ehsan Khatami, K. Mikelsons, D. Galanakis, A. Macridin, J. Moreno, R. Scalettar, M. Jarrell

Faculty Publications

We investigate the two-dimensional Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping, t′, using the dynamical cluster approximation. We confirm the existence of a first-order phase-separation transition terminating at a second-order critical point at filling nc(t′) and temperature Tps(t′). We find that as t′ approaches zero, Tps(t′) vanishes and nc(t′) approaches the filling associated with the quantum critical point separating the Fermi liquid from the pseudogap phase. We propose that the quantum critical point under the superconducting dome is the zero-temperature limit of the line of second-order critical points.

Compassion-Focused Reappraisal, Benefit-Focused Reappraisal, And Rumination After An Interpersonal Offense: Emotion-Regulation Implications For Subjective Emotion, Linguistic Responses, And Physiology, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, Ross W. Knoll, Nova G. Hinman, Paul Deyoung

Faculty Publications

This repeated measures psychophysiology experiment studied three responses to a past interpersonal offense (38 females and 33 males). We compared rumination with two offense reappraisal strategies. Compassion-focused reappraisal emphasized the offender's humanity, and interpreted the transgression as evidence of the offender's need for positive transformation. Benefit-focused reappraisal emphasized insights gained or strengths shown in facing the offense. Supporting the manipulations, compassion-focused reappraisal stimulated the most empathy and forgiveness, whereas benefit-focused reappraisal prompted the most benefit language and gratitude. Both reappraisals decreased aroused, negative emotion, and related facial muscle tension at the brow (corrugator). Both reappraisals increased happiness and positive emotion …

Isolated photon production in deep inelastic ep scattering has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 320 pb - 1. Measurements were made in the isolated-photon transverse-energy and pseudorapidity ranges 4 < E Tγ < 15 GeV and - 0.7 < η γ < 0.9 for exchanged photon virtualities, Q 2, in the range 10 < Q 2 < 350 GeV 2 and for invariant masses of the hadronic system W X > 5 GeV. Differential cross sections are presented for inclusive isolated photon production as functions of Q 2, x, E Tγ and η γ. Leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo simulations and perturbative QCD predictions give a reasonable description of the data over most of the kinematic range. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

Cluster expansions of first-principles density-functional databases in multicomponent systems are now used as a routine tool for the prediction of zero- and finite-temperature physical properties. The ability of producing large databases of various degrees of accuracy, i.e., high-throughput calculations, makes pertinent the analysis of error propagation during the inversion process. This is a very demanding task as both data and numerical noise have to be treated on equal footing. We have addressed this problem by using an analysis that combines the variational and evolutionary approaches to cluster expansions. Simulated databases were constructed ex professo to sample the configurational space in …

We use a laser high-harmonics-based extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) polarimeter to determine the optical constants of elemental uranium in the wavelength range from 10 to 47 nm. The constants are extracted from the measure ratio of p-polarized to s-polarized reflectance from a thin uranium film deposited in situ. The film thickness is inferred from a spectroscopic ellipsometry measurement of the sample after complete oxidation in room air. Uranium has been used as a high-reflectance material in the EUV. However, difficulties with oxidation prevented its careful characterization previous to this study. We find that measured optical constants for uranium vary significantly from previous …

We present a new design for an electrochemical cell for use with wafer working electrodes. The key feature of the design is the use of half turn thumb screws to form a liquid-tight seal between an o-ring and the sample surface. The assembly or disassembly of the cell requires a half turn of each thumb screw, which facilitates the quick turn around of wafer samples. The electrochemical performance of the cell is demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry and double step chronoamperometry measurements of the ferricyanide/ferrocyanide couple.

We introduce a test environment to replicate the well-known clustering of reflections in power delay profiles arising from late-time delays and reflections. Urban wireless propagation environments are known to exhibit such clustering. The test setup combines discrete reflections generated by a fading simulator with the continuous distribution of reflections created in a reverberation chamber. We describe measurements made in an urban environment in Denver, CO, that illustrate these multiple distributions of reflections. Our comparison of measurements made in the urban environment to those made in the new test environment shows good agreement.
