Measurement System For High Pressure Characterizations Of Materials, Matthew K. Jacobsen

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Thermoelectric materials have long been investigated for possible use as power sources. This application was recently put to use in the Voyager space program, powering the deep space probes. Despite the usefulness of these materials, the use of pressure to investigate the material properties has only recently become interesting. As such, the work in this document was to developing a system for concurrently measuring the necessary properties. This system is capable of measuring the electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient in the pressure range from 0 - 10 GPa. The results for zinc, almandine garnet, and nickel are presented …

Speciation And Spectroscopy Of The Uranyl And Tetravalent Plutonium Nitrate Systems: Fundamental Studies And Applications To Used Fuel Reprocessing, Nicholas A. Smith

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This dissertation explores the use of UV-Visible spectroscopy and Time Resolved Laser Induced Fluorescence spectroscopy as near real time process monitors of uranium and plutonium concentrations in aqueous reprocessing trains. The molar absorptivities and linear ranges of these metals were investigated under total nitrate and acid concentrations similar to those found in current reprocessing systems. Concurrent to this, a new multiple wavelength monitor was derived that is capable of determining the total nitrate concentration spectroscopically. This method uses the uranium absorbance spectrum to calculate the nitrate concentration in solution. When used as part of an Advanced Safeguard suite, this technique …

Chemical And Electronic Structure Of Surfaces And Interfaces In Compound Semiconductors, Sujitra Pookpanratana

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The interface formation between two different materials is important in applications for optoelectronic devices. Often, the success or performance of these devices is dependent on the formation of these heterojunctions. In this work, the surface and interfaces in such materials for optoelectronic devices are investigated by a suite of X-ray analytical techniques including X-ray photoelectron (XPS), X-ray excited Auger electron (XAES), and X-ray emission (XES) spectroscopies to provide novel insight.

For the group III-nitrides (e.g., AlxGa1-xN) used in many light emitting devices, a significant challenge exists to form an Ohmic contact. The electron affinities and band gaps of GaN and …

Jahn-Teller Coupling And Fragmentation After Core-Shell Excitation Ini Cf4 Investigated By Partial-Ion-Yield Spectroscopy, Renaud Guillemin, Wayne C. Stolte, Maria Novella Piancastelli, Dennis W. Lindle

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

We investigate fragmentation processes induced by core-level photoexcitation in CF4 at both the carbon and fluorine K edges by means of partial-ion-yield spectroscopy. The molecule CF4 is a textbook example of systems in which Jahn-Teller coupling strongly manifests itself in the photoabsorption spectrum. Spectral features related to Jahn-Teller and quasi-Jahn-Teller splitting are observed, and important differences in the fragmentation pathways are revealed depending on the symmetries of the core-excited states. We interpret these experimental observations on the grounds of symmetry lowering from the Td to the C3v point group as well as preferential orientation with respect …

X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) at the cadmium L3 and oxygen K edges for CdO thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition method, is interpreted within the real-space multiple scattering formalism, FEFF code. The features in the experimental spectra are well reproduced by calculations for a cluster of about six and ten coordination shells around the absorber for L3 edge of Cd and K edge of O, respectively. The calculated projected electronic density of states is found to be in good agreement with unoccupied electronic states in experimental data and allows to conclude that the orbital character of the …

Structural And Magnetic Properties Of Iron Clusters, Andrew Mohrland, Eunja Kim Aug 2010

Structural And Magnetic Properties Of Iron Clusters, Andrew Mohrland, Eunja Kim

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Electronic, magnetic, and chemical properties of Fe nanoparticles are of particular interest for materials science, engineering, and metallurgical applications, including biomedical applications (e.g., medical imaging, cancer treatment, etc.). In this study, we search for the most stable geometries of the Fe clusters, Fen, up to n=8. Binding energies, magnetic moments, bond lengths, bond angles, and charge densities of clusters are computed and compared to the available experimental data. The various cluster isomers were examined energetically. We found that, in general, higher dimensional geometries are more stable than lower dimensions (i.e., 1-dimension or 2-dimension). Calculations for the Fe dimer yield a …

Hydrostaticity Of Pressure Transmitting Medium Of 4:1 Methanol: Ethanol At High Pressure And Low Temperature, Christopher Salvo, Andrew Cornelius

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

In high pressure physics a key element is the pressure transmitting medium. The purpose of this research is to study the hydrostatic limits of pressure transmitting media such as 4:1 Methanol: Ethanol and Silicone Fluid at low temperatures and high pressures. This will be done using a Merrill-Bassett diamond anvil cell (DAC) placed inside of a cryostat capable of reaching temperatures as low as 30 Kelvin for a range to 300 Kelvin. The hydrostaticity of 4:1 Methanol:Ethanol has been heavily studied at room temperature using the fluorescence of ruby by fitting the R1 and R2 lines to pseudo-Voigt functions. The full …

Laser Microraman Study Of Reduced Synthesized Spinel Powders, Alexandra J. Leandre, Michael M. Rodriguez, Joseph Lussier, Brittany Morgan, Brian Hosterman, John W. Farley

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

The Raman effect is the excitation or de-excitation of vibrational modes resulting from the inelastic scattering of light from a gas, liquid, or solid with a shift in energy from that of the usually incident radiation. Raman microscopy was performed on synthesized spinel powders of solid solution FexCr3-xO4 to determine the dependence of the vibrational modes upon the metal cations. The powders were synthesized in a combustion reaction using metal nitrates and urea. The oxide powders were reduced in a hydrogen/argon gas flow at high temperature.

Potassium Chlorate Decomposition Under High Pressure, Harrison Ruiz, Michael G. Pravica, Martin Galley Aug 2010

Potassium Chlorate Decomposition Under High Pressure, Harrison Ruiz, Michael G. Pravica, Martin Galley

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

High pressure physics involves placing various substances under high pressure and observing changes in that substance. In this experiment this high amount of pressure is induced using a diamond anvil cell. A diamond anvil cell uses a metal gasket to hold the sample between two diamonds, which will press on the sample to reach high pressures. High pressures are reached with a moderate amount of force by exerting that force over a small area. Diamonds are used for the compression because of their hardness and ability to resist compression. The pressure being exerted on the sample using a diamond anvil …

Determination Of Olivine Orientation Dependence Through Raman Spectroscopy, Alexandra J. Leandre, Joseph Lussier, Brittany Morgan, Michael Rodriguez

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Raman spectra were taken of olivine for analysis of vibrational energy intensity ratios. This allowed for determination of its crystal orientation. Garnet inclusions in peridotite were mapped and Raman spectra were taken for these as well. The inclusions could not identified, and data from the Raman spectra proved inconclusive due to difficulty in removing background signal.

Thin Film Optical Filter Fabrication And Characterization, Adam G. Hammouda, David P. Shelton Aug 2010

Thin Film Optical Filter Fabrication And Characterization, Adam G. Hammouda, David P. Shelton

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Thin film coatings have a large number of applications. For example, one can eliminate unwanted reflection on a photographic lens or unwanted wavelengths of light in optics experimentation. The fabrication and characterization of films whose refractive indices can be arbitrarily modulated (‘Rugate Filters’) is an ongoing exploration in materials science1,2. Therefore, calibrating a process which can manufacture such films is a relevant pursuit in forwarding such explorations. Reactive magnetron sputter deposition is a commonly used technique for the productions of thin films3,4. This technique steadily flows reactive gas (RG) into a vacuum chamber in which an electric field has been …

High Pressure X-Ray Diffraction Studies On Zrfe2: A Potential Hydrogen Absorption Medium, Dylan D. Wood, Ravhi S. Kumar Aug 2010

High Pressure X-Ray Diffraction Studies On Zrfe2: A Potential Hydrogen Absorption Medium, Dylan D. Wood, Ravhi S. Kumar

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

The potential application of intermetallic compounds (IMC) under high hydrogen pressure in studies of hydrogen sorption properties is defined by two important properties. Intermetallics of Laves phases have a suitable binding energy for hydrogen which allows its absorption or desorption near room temperature and atmospheric pressure. High pressures allow to efficiently interact hydrogen with intermetallics, which were considered nonhydride forming [1,2]. For example, ZrFe2, ZrCo2, and ZrFe2 possess fairly high hydrogen absorption capacity at high pressures [3]. A nonactivated ZrFe2 sample starts to interact with hydrogen only at 80 MPa, while equilibrium absorption and desorption pressures of the activated alloy …

High Pressure Structural Studies On Eus Nano Particles Up To 52 Gpa, Kristie Canaday, Ravhi S. Kumar Aug 2010

High Pressure Structural Studies On Eus Nano Particles Up To 52 Gpa, Kristie Canaday, Ravhi S. Kumar

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Crystal size reduction in bulk materials changes the structural and magnetic properties considerably [1]. More importantly the transition pressure is strongly influenced by temperature, pressure, and the crystallite size effect. Rare earth europium chalcogenides crystallize in the NaCl (rock salt) type structure. The interest in Eu nanomaterials is motivated by the possibility of their use in magnetic devices [2,3]. Recent studies suggest that europium chalcogenide nanocrystals exhibit significant changes in their structural and magnetic properties, compared to bulk chalcogenides, when the nanocrystal diameter decreases. The crystal structure and phase transition behavior of EuS nanoparticles have been investigated and compared as …

High Pressure Studies Of Titanium Hydride Up To 50 Gpa With Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction, Greg Harding, Patricia Kalita, Stanislav Sinogeikin, Andrew Cornelius

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Titanium dihydride has the potential to play an important role in the efficiency of high density hydrogen storage. The structural instability of TiH2 at high pressures makes an accurate characterization of its structure a vital part of understanding its behavior. A sample of TiH2 was placed in a diamond anvil cell and studied from ambient pressure up to 53 GPa using in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) of Argonne National Laboratory (Sector 16, HPCAT). From data of the evolution of the structure with pressure, an equation of state was obtained to model the behavior of …

High Pressure Infrared Studies Of Hmx, Jennifer Wojno, Michael G. Pravica, Martin Galley Aug 2010

High Pressure Infrared Studies Of Hmx, Jennifer Wojno, Michael G. Pravica, Martin Galley

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

We are studying the effects of pressure on HMX (Octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine) using infrared spectroscopy. The sample is put under pressure using a diamond anvil cell at ambient temperature, data is collected at the National Synchrotron Light Source in Brookhaven National Laboratory. In analyzing this data, we hope to learn more about the molecular vibrations as the molecule bends and deforms under pressure. Such understanding could aid in determining new safety standards or more efficient ways of using HMX. In future studies, we intend to include the aspect of temperature variation in addition to pressure, with the goal of describing the molecule …

Vibrational Spectroscopic Study Of The 1,3,5,7-Cyclooctatetraene At High Static Pressures, Edward Romano Aug 2010

Vibrational Spectroscopic Study Of The 1,3,5,7-Cyclooctatetraene At High Static Pressures, Edward Romano

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (COT) is a single-ringed hydrocarbon that has not been studied extensively under high static pressures. It was the intent of this study to reveal its high-pressure behavior through its vibrational spectra. To this end, its infrared spectra as a function of pressure were collected at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) U2A beamline, as well as its Raman spectra over pressure using a micro-Raman spectrometer.

The spectra show the typical stiffening of force constants with increasing pressure for most peaks, particularly those which would theoretically exhibit a mode-softening behavior under hypotheses of molecular planarization and aromatization. Additionally, the data …

Neutron Flux And Energy Characterization Of A Plutonium-Beryllium Isotopic Neutron Source By Monte Carlo Simulation With Verification By Neutron Activation Analysis, Zachary R. Harvey Aug 2010

Neutron Flux And Energy Characterization Of A Plutonium-Beryllium Isotopic Neutron Source By Monte Carlo Simulation With Verification By Neutron Activation Analysis, Zachary R. Harvey

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this research was to characterize the neutron energy distribution and flux emitted from the UNLV plutonium-beryllium source, serial number MRC-N-W PuBe 453. This was accomplished through the use of the MCNPX/5 Monte-Carlo particle transport code to simulate radiation interactions within the physical environment of the source and its surroundings. The moderating drum currently containing the source as well as all of the sampling ports were accurately modeled in MCNPX/5. This geometry was then used to simulate the neutron interactions taking place in these geometries. The results of the simulations were then verified by the use of specifically …

Characterization Of Plutonium Particles Originating From The Bomarc Accident -1960, Richard Charles Gostic May 2010

Characterization Of Plutonium Particles Originating From The Bomarc Accident -1960, Richard Charles Gostic

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Within the U.S. arsenal, 32 accidents with nuclear weapons were reported between 1950 and 1980. One of these accidents occurred at McGuire AFB in 1960. A BOMARC missile armed with a nuclear warhead caught on fire and as a result the warhead was destroyed. Sub-millimeter particles consisting of weapons grade plutonium (WGPu) produced by this accident were distributed around the site and remained in the environment for 47 years. Soil cores known to contain WGPu particles produced by this accident were obtained. The particles were localized and removed from the soil with the aid of high resolution computed tomography. The …

Partial Phonon Density Of States Of 57-Iron And 161-Dysprosium In Dyfe3 By Nuclear Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Under High Pressure, Elizabeth Anne Tanis

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The dual partial phonon density of states (DOS) from two different Mossbauer isotopes (161Dy and 57Fe) in the same material (DyFe3) was successfully measured using the nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NRIXS) technique at high pressure. Nuclear inelastic scattering measurements yield an in-depth understanding of the element-specific dynamic properties. The Debye temperatures , the Lamb-Mossbauer factor, and the vibrational contributions to the Helmholtz free energy, specific heat , entropy and internal energy are calculated directly from the phonon density of states.

Finite Strain Studies Of Single Crystal Fe3p Under High Pressures, John William Howard Apr 2010

Finite Strain Studies Of Single Crystal Fe3p Under High Pressures, John William Howard

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Fe3P (synthetic schreibersite) is a phosphide occurring in iron alloys. Phosphorousis often considered an undesired impurity causing brittleness. Conversely, in some cases the addition of iron phosphides to certain materials is beneficial (e.g.properties of certain frictional materials are enhanced). In terrestrial rock, we do not find Fe3P, although (Fe;Ni)3P (natural schreibersite) is found in nearly all iron-containing meteorites. In this project, we examine the unit cell parameters of Fe3P as function of pressure and derive the respective axial and bulk compressibilities. Both Vinet and Birch-Murnaghan formulations were used to relate pressure and unit cell volume, and a comparison of each …

Theoretical And Computational Study Of Time Dependent Scattering On A 2d Surface, Michael Sohn Apr 2010

Theoretical And Computational Study Of Time Dependent Scattering On A 2d Surface, Michael Sohn

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The quantum mechanical treatment of the elastic scattring of atoms from a crystal surface provides valuable information, such as surface properties and gas-surface interaction potentials. However, since it is based on the stationary state solution, it does not provide the details of the scattering process in the neighborhood of the surface, especially when atoms are physically adsorbed. In this thesis, the time evolution of the scattering process is treated in 2D with a model potential, V(x, z) = -|g|δ(z) + λδ(z)cos(2πx/a), using the Gaussian wave packet approach. The focus is on the case where the Gaussian wave packet makes a …

Sulfur K-Edge Photo-Fragmentation Of Ethylene Sulfide, Wayne C. Stolte, Gunnar Ohrwall Jan 2010

Sulfur K-Edge Photo-Fragmentation Of Ethylene Sulfide, Wayne C. Stolte, Gunnar Ohrwall

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

We have investigated the photofragmentation properties of the three-membered ring heterocyclic molecule ethylene sulfide or thiirane, C2H4S, by time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. Positive ions have been collected as a function of photon energy around the S K ionization threshold. Branching ratios were derived for all detected ions, which are informative of the decay dynamics and photofragmentation patterns of the core-excited species. We present a new assignment of the spectral features around the S K-edge.
