Making Artificial Cips Data With A Generative Adversarial Neural Network, Austin Hedges
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
Polar mesospheric clouds (PMCs) have been studied for thirteen years by NASA's Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) satellite. The Cloud Imaging and Particle Size (CIPS) instrument onboard AIM has taken many images of PMCs over this time. Such a large number of images makes CIPS data ideal for training neural networks which require large datasets. CIPS images were used to train a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to train towards being able to generate purely artificial CIPS-like images.

The constant can then be used to calculate the age of the universe. Doing this will allow us to compare our results with a more accepted quantity.

In this experiment, we will study the properties of entropy, multiplicity and probability using dice. We will roll 4 & 8 sided dice together and 4, 6, and 8 sided dice together for many trials and we will record the sum of the dice for each roll. We will then calculate each possible outcome’s expected multiplicity and probability of occurring. We can also predict each outcome’s expected entropy and compare these expected values of multiplicity and entropy to their actual values we found in this experiment. In this experiment, we analyzed the images and spectra of multiple galaxies and found the velocity and distance from Earth of each galaxy. Plotting the velocity against distance, we found a value for the Hubble constant using the slope of the trendline. This value was used to compute the age of the universe. Both the Hubble constant and the age of the universe were compared to the currently accepted values for consistency.

A Tesla coil is a special type of step-up transformer. It takes an input current at a given frequency and voltage, increases the frequency and voltage via resonant induc tive coupling, and outputs a very high frequency, high voltage current . While it was originally intended as a means of wirelessly transferring energy, the output from a Tesla coil been used in the arts to move paint around on a glass surface using extremely high voltages on the order of 1 megavolt (MV) or 1000000 volts (V). We report the first measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry APV in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from 208Pb. APV is sensitive to the radius of the neutron distribution (Rn). The result APV=0.656±0.060(stat)±0.014(syst) ppm corresponds to a difference between the radii of the neutron and proton distributions Rn-Rp=0.33-0.18+0.16 fm and provides the first electroweak observation of the neutron skin which is expected in a heavy, neutron-rich nucleus.

The parity-violating cross-section asymmetry in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from unpolarized protons has been measured at a four-momentum transfer squared Q2=0.624 GeV2 and beam energy Eb=3.48 GeV to be APV=-23.80±0.78(stat)±0.36(syst) parts per million. This result is consistent with zero contribution of strange quarks to the combination of electric and magnetic form factors GEs+0.517GMs=0.003±0.010(stat)±0.004(syst)±0.009(ff), where the third error is due to the limits of precision on the electromagnetic form factors and radiative corrections. We report the first measurement of the double-spin asymmetry ALT for charged pion electroproduction in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic electron scattering on a transversely polarized 3He target. The kinematics focused on the valence quark region, 0.1622. The corresponding neutron ALT asymmetries were extracted from the measured 3He asymmetries and proton over 3He cross section ratios using the effective polarization approximation. These new data probe the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function g1Tq and therefore provide access to quark spin-orbit correlations. We present a search at the Jefferson Laboratory for new forces mediated by sub-GeV vector bosons with weak coupling α′ to electrons. Such a particle A′ can be produced in electron-nucleus fixed-target scattering and then decay to an e+e- pair, producing a narrow resonance in the QED trident spectrum. Using APEX test run data, we searched in the mass range 175–250 MeV, found no evidence for an A′→e+e- reaction, and set an upper limit of α′/α≃10-6. We report the first measurement of target single spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive 3He(e,e′π±)X reaction on a transversely polarized target. The experiment, conducted at Jefferson Lab using a 5.9 GeV electron beam, covers a range of 0.1622. The Collins and Sivers moments were extracted from the azimuthal angular dependence of the measured asymmetries. The π± Collins moments for 3He are consistent with zero, except for the π+ moment at x=0.35, which deviates from zero by 2.3σ. We present measurements of the ep→epπ0 cross section extracted at two values of four-momentum transfer Q2=1.9 GeV2 and Q2=2.3 GeV2 at Jefferson Lab Hall A. The kinematic range allows one to study the evolution of the extracted cross section as a function of Q2 and W. Results are confronted with Regge-inspired calculations and GPD predictions. An intepretation of our data within the framework of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering is also discussed.

The electric form factor of the neutron was determined from studies of the reaction 3He⃗(e⃗,e′n)pp in quasielastic kinematics in Hall A at Jefferson Lab. Longitudinally polarized electrons were scattered off a polarized target in which the nuclear polarization was oriented perpendicular to the momentum transfer. The scattered electrons were detected in a magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with neutrons that were registered in a large-solid-angle detector. More than doubling the Q2 range over which it is known, we find GEn=0.0236±0.0017(stat)±0.0026(syst), 0.0208±0.0024±0.0019, and 0.0147±0.0020±0.0014 for Q2=1.72, 2.48, and 3.41 GeV2, respectively.

Trace metal elements introduced into our environment from anthropogenic sources can become toxic at high levels contributing to a host of human and animal health problems. The purpose of this work is to initially characterize toxic metals present in cigarette tobacco and ash using Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (ETAAS). The broader impact of this study is to assess the environmental effects of cigarette smoking around designated smoking areas on the Longwood University campus.
