Measurements of the differential production cross sections d =dpB T and d =dyB for B0 mesons produced in pp collisions at ffiffi s p ¼ 7 TeV are presented. The data set used was collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 40 pb 1. A search for neutral minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) Higgs bosons in pp collisions at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The results are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb 1 recorded by the CMS experiment. The search uses decays of the Higgs bosons to tau pairs. No excess is observed in the tau-pair invariant-mass spectrum. The resulting upper limits on the Higgs boson production cross section times branching fraction to tau pairs, as a function of the pseudoscalar Higgs boson mass, yield stringent new bounds in the …

A search for Z bosons in the þ decay channel has been performed in PbPb collisions at √sNN = 2:76 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, in a 7:2 b 1 data sample. The number of opposite-sign muon pairs observed in the 60–120 GeV=c2 invariant mass range is 39, corresponding to a yield per unit of rapidity (y) and per minimum bias event of ½33:8 5:5ðstatÞ 4:4ðsystÞ 10 8, in the jyj < 2:0 range. Rapidity, transverse momentum, and centrality dependencies are also measured. The results agree with next-to-leading order QCD calculations, scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions.

Micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) have had a recent surge of interest due to their many commercial, military and scientific applications. Their wide range of uses, such as those intended for close proximity situations, could include search and rescue missions as well as reconnaissance and surveillance. The optimal Strouhal numbers, that is the dimensionless number describing oscillating flow mechanisms, obtained for a freely flying system are found to be in the range of 0.2≤ St≤ 0.35[5]. It has been proposed that Strouhal number selection in natural flight is not the result of an active feed back control mechanism but a limit cycle …

First measurements of dihadron correlations for charged particles are presented for central PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV over a broad range in relative pseudorapidity (∆η) and the full range of relative azimuthal angle (∆η). The data were collected with the CMS detector, at the LHC. A broadening of the away-side (∆ϕ ≈ π) azimuthal correlation is observed at all ∆η, as compared to the measurements in pp collisions. Furthermore, long-range dihadron correlations in ∆η are observed for particles with similar ϕ values. This phenomenon, also known as the “ridge”, persists up to at least |∆η| …

Low-Energy Electron Production By Relativistic Runaway Electron Avalanches In Air, Joseph R. Dwyer, Leonid P. Babich Jan 2011

Low-Energy Electron Production By Relativistic Runaway Electron Avalanches In Air, Joseph R. Dwyer, Leonid P. Babich

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the production of low-energy (few eV) electrons by relativistic runaway electron avalanches. This work is motivated by a growing body of literature that claims that runaway electron avalanches produce an anomalous growth of low-energy electrons and hence an anomalously large electrical conductivity, a factor of 50 larger than expected from standard calculations. Such large enhancements would have a substantial impact on properties of runaway electron avalanches and their observable effects. Indeed, these purportedly large conductivities have been used to argue that runaway electron avalanches result in a novel form of electrical breakdown called "runaway breakdown." In this …

Melting Kinetics In Microgravity, Martin E. Glicksman Jan 2011

Melting Kinetics In Microgravity, Martin E. Glicksman

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We analyzed the large data archive obtained from microgravity experiments called the Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE). The final orbital mission of the IDGE allowed streaming of real-time video of crystal growth and melting in low-Earth orbit of high-purity pivalic acid anhydride (PVA). Melting kinetics was observed in detail for the first time under microgravity conditions. Normally, terrestrial gravity precludes observation and analysis of conduction-limited melting by stimulating buoyancy flows and inducing collapse of the solid-liquid structure. The initial dendritic mushy zone melts under steady heating into isolated crystallite clusters that remain stationary within the melt, and eventually shrink toward …

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Measurements of primary charged hadron multiplicity distributions are presented for non-single-diffractive events in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 0.9, 2.36, and 7 TeV, in five pseudorapidity ranges from |η| < 0.5 to |η| < 2.4. The data were collected with the minimum-bias trigger of the CMS experiment during the LHC commissioning runs in 2009 and the 7 TeV run in 2010. The multiplicity distribution at √s = 0.9 TeV is in agreement with previous measurements. At higher energies the increase of the mean multiplicity with √s is underestimated by most event generators. The average transverse momentum as a function of the multiplicity is also presented. The measurement of higher-order moments of the multiplicity distribution confirms the violation of Koba-Nielsen-Olesen scaling that has been observed at lower energies.

The observed event yields are consistent with standard model backgrounds predicted using control samples obtained from the data. A measurement of the angular correlations between beauty and anti-beauty hadrons (BB¯) produced in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the CERN LHC is presented, probing for the first time the region of small angular separation. The B hadrons are identified by the presence of displaced secondary vertices from their decays. The B hadron angular separation is reconstructed from the decay vertices and the primary-interaction vertex. The differential BB¯ production cross section, measured from a data sample collected by CMS and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.1 pb−1, shows that a sizable fraction of the …

We present results from a study of hadronic event structure in high energy e+e− interactions using the L3 detector at LEP. A new class of event shape distributions are measured at and above the Z boson pole for light quark (u, d, s, c) flavours. Energy flow correlations are studied for all hadronic events. Next-to-leading-log QCD calculations and QCD models with improved leading-log approximations are compared to data and good agreement is found at the Z-pole whereas some discrepancies are observed at higher centre-of-mass energies.
