Eurasian Journal of Physics and Functional Materials

The phase composition of several fragments of the ancient ceramic of the early medieval settlement of Asusay and burial ground Eleke Sazy in the modern Republic of Kazakhstan has been studied using neutron diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The quartz, calcite, and feldspar minerals are dominant phases in the studied ceramic fragments. The fractions of those phases were obtained. The spatial arrangement of inner components inside volumes of fragments was determined using neutron tomography. The pores in the ceramic fragments were segmented, and the porosity for each sample was obtained. The phase composition and internal pores are discussed within the framework …

Magnetic Structures Of Sawtooth Olivines Mn2six 4 (X = S, Se) Determined Through Neutron Powder Diffraction, Melaku Sisay Tafere Dec 2022

Magnetic Structures Of Sawtooth Olivines Mn2six 4 (X = S, Se) Determined Through Neutron Powder Diffraction, Melaku Sisay Tafere

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In olivine chalcogenide Mn2SiX 4 (X = S, Se) compounds, the Mn lattice produces a sawtooth, which is of critical significance in magnetism due to the potential for manifesting at bands in the magnon spectrum, a crucial component in magnonics. The compounds Mn2SiS4 and Mn2SiSe4 in Mn2SiX 4 family undergo antiferromagnetic phase transitions at T â?? 85 K and â?? 66 K, respectively, as determined from the specific heat, Cp(T). The average and local crystal structuresare determined using synchrotron X-ray, neutron diffraction, and X-ray total scattering data followed by Rietveld and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. It is found from …

Magnetism Of Novel Rare-Earth-Free Intermetallic Compounds, Haohan Wang Jun 2022

Magnetism Of Novel Rare-Earth-Free Intermetallic Compounds, Haohan Wang

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Rare-earth-free magnets have drawn lots of interest because of their low cost, and the production is not limited by the shortage of rare-earth elements. This dissertation focuses on three rare-earth-free materials, Fe-Co-Ti alloys, Fe-Ni-B alloys, and Co-Si. All of them are synthesized by arc melting followed by melt-spinning. Fe3+xCo3−xTi2 (x = 0, 2, 3) alloys exhibit hexagonal crystal structures and show non-collinear spin structures according to neutron diffraction. The magnetic moments have projections on both the c-axis and basal plane, and the corresponding misalignment angle exhibits a nonlinear decrease with …

Structural, Magnetic, And Transport Properties Of Zr-Substituted La₀.₇ Sr₀.₃ Mn O₃, Minseob Kim, Jinbo Yang, Qingsheng Cai, William Joseph James, William B. Yelon, Paul Ernest Parris, Satish K. Malik May 2007

Structural, Magnetic, And Transport Properties Of Zr-Substituted La₀.₇ Sr₀.₃ Mn O₃, Minseob Kim, Jinbo Yang, Qingsheng Cai, William Joseph James, William B. Yelon, Paul Ernest Parris, Satish K. Malik

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Zr-substituted perovskites La0.7Sr0.3 Mn1-x Zrx O3 with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.20 were investigated by neutron diffraction (ND), magnetization, electric resistivity, and magnetoresistance measurements. ND refinements reveal that substituted Zr4+ goes only to the Mn site. Because of its large size, this leads to a Zr-solubility limit at x ≤ 0.10. The x ≤ 0.10 samples exhibit a rhombohedral structure (R3c) from 10 K to room temperature. For the x ≤ 0.10 samples, the cell parameters a and c, and volume increase continuously with increasing Zr content. In addition, the structural distortion of …

An Improved Flexible Neutron Detector For Powder Diffraction Experiments, Thomas Kevin Mcknight Jul 2005

An Improved Flexible Neutron Detector For Powder Diffraction Experiments, Thomas Kevin Mcknight

Theses and Dissertations

Large amounts of money are being applied to the construction of the next generation of spallation sources for neutron scattering. Neutron powder diffraction instruments will be an important element of these facilities and the incorporation of detectors into these instruments with a high neutron capture efficiency is desirable. A new detector design named the Flexible Embedded Fiber Detector (FEFD) has been developed and tested for this thesis. This detector is based on wavelength shifting fibers embedded in a zinc-sulfide lithium-fluoride based scintillator. The virtue of this design is that the detecting surface can be curved around the Debye-Scherrer rings. This …

Magnetic And Crystallographic Order In Α‐Manganese, A. C. Lawson, Allen C. Larson, M. C. Aronson, S. Johnson, Z. Fisk, Paul C. Canfield, J. D. Thompson, R. B. Von Dreele Jan 1994

Magnetic And Crystallographic Order In Α‐Manganese, A. C. Lawson, Allen C. Larson, M. C. Aronson, S. Johnson, Z. Fisk, Paul C. Canfield, J. D. Thompson, R. B. Von Dreele

We have made time‐of‐flight neutron diffractionmeasurements on α‐manganese metal. Powder diffraction measurements were made at 14 temperatures between 15 and 305 K, and single crystalmeasurements were made at 15 and 300 K. We found that the crystal structure of α‐Mn is tetragonal below its Néel point of 100 K, with crystal symmetryI4̄2m and magnetic (Shubnikov) symmetry P I 4̄21 c. In agreement with the earlier results of Yamada et al., there are six independent magnetic atoms, and we found that their moments are weakly temperature dependent. The onset of magnetic order causes slight changes in the atomic positions and in …
