Electroweak Interactions On The Deuteron, Jose Luis Bonilla Aug 2024

Electroweak Interactions On The Deuteron, Jose Luis Bonilla

Doctoral Dissertations

This research explores the intricacies of Electroweak Interactions on the Deuteron, with a particular focus on muon capture and the hyperfine shift in atomic and muonic deuterium. These processes are phenomena of significant importance in nuclear physics. Understanding these interactions is crucial for illuminating fundamental aspects of nuclear structure and providing insight into the fundamental forces and interactions governing atomic and nuclear systems, as well as related processes such as proton-proton fusion or other astrophysical reactions, which are phenomena that cannot be easily reproduced in a laboratory and require a theoretical treatment to predict observables. Through this research, we systematically …

Cross Section Measurements Of Deuteron Electro-Disintegration At Very High Recoil Momenta And Large 4-Momentum Transfers (Q2), Carlos Yero Jul 2020

Cross Section Measurements Of Deuteron Electro-Disintegration At Very High Recoil Momenta And Large 4-Momentum Transfers (Q2), Carlos Yero

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The 2H(e,e′p)n cross sections have been measured at negative 4-momentum transfers of Q2 = 4.5±0.5 (GeV/c)2 and Q2 = 3.5±0.5 (GeV/c)2 reaching neutron recoil (missing) momenta up to pr ∼1.0 GeV/c. The data have been obtained at fixed neutron recoil angles 5o ≤ θnq ≤ 95o with respect to the 3-momentum transfer q. The new data agree well with the previous data which reached pr ∼ 500 MeV/c. At θnq = 35o and 45o, final state interactions (FSI), meson exchange currents (MEC) and isobar configurations (IC) …

Inclusive Neutrino Scattering Off The Deuteron At Low Energies In Chiral Effective Field Theory, A. Baroni, R. Schiavilla Jan 2017

Inclusive Neutrino Scattering Off The Deuteron At Low Energies In Chiral Effective Field Theory, A. Baroni, R. Schiavilla

Physics Faculty Publications

Cross sections for inclusive neutrino scattering off the deuteron induced by neutral and charge-changing weak currents are calculated from threshold up to 150 MeV energies in a chiral effective field theory including high orders in the power counting. Contributions beyond leading order (LO) in the weak current are found to be small, and increase the cross sections obtained with the LO transition operators by a couple of percent over the whole energy range 0–150 MeV. The cutoff dependence is negligible, and the predicted cross sections are within ∼2% of, albeit consistently larger than, corresponding predictions obtained in conventional meson-exchange frameworks.

Nuclear Effects In The Deuteron And Global Pdf Fits, S. I. Alekhin, S. A. Kulagin, Roberto Petti

Faculty Publications

We present a detailed study of nuclear corrections in the deuteron (D) from an analysis of data from charged-lepton deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) off proton and D, as well as from dimuon pair production in pp and pD collisions and W± and the Z boson production at pp (p¯p) colliders. In particular, we discuss the determination of the off-shell function describing the modification of parton distributions (PDF) in bound nucleons in the context of global PDF fits. Our results are consistent with the ones obtained earlier from the study of the ratios of DIS structure functions A 2 / F …

Differential cross sections for elastic scattering of photons from the deuteron have recently been measured at the Tagged-Photon Facility at theMAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden. These first new measurements in more than a decade further constrain the isoscalar electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon and provide the first-ever results above 100 MeV, where the sensitivity to the polarizabilities is increased. We add 23 points between 70 and 112 MeV, at angles 60, 120, and 150. Analysis of these data using a chiral effective field theory indicates that the cross sections are both self-consistent and …

The electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon are fundamental properties that describe its response to external electric and magnetic fields. They can be extracted from Compton-scattering data—and have been, with good accuracy, in the case of the proton. In contradistinction, information for the neutron requires the use of Compton scattering from nuclear targets. Here, we report a new measurement of elastic photon scattering from deuterium using quasimonoenergetic tagged photons at the MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden. These first new data in more than a decade effectively double the world data set. Their energy range overlaps with previous experiments and extends …

Measurement Of Single And Double Spin Asymmetries In Semi-Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering On Proton And Deuteron, Suman Bandhu Koirala

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The EG1-DVCS experiment with CLAS at Jefferson Lab collected semi-inclusive pion electro-production data on longitudinally polarized solid state NH3 and ND3 targets with longitudinally polarized electrons of approximately 6 GeV energy. Data on all three pion channels, π +, π– and π0, were collected simultaneously. The charged pions were identified by their time-of-flight information whereas the neutral pions were reconstructed from the invariant mass of two photons. The experiment covered a wide kinematic range: 1 GeV 2Q2 ≤ 3.2 GeV2, 0.12 ≤ xB ≤ 0.48, 0.0 GeV ≤ Ph⊥ …

Energy Dependence Of Deuteron Induced Nuclear Reaction Cross Sections On Li, Be, B, C, N, O, And F, Mathew Parenti Jan 2014

Energy Dependence Of Deuteron Induced Nuclear Reaction Cross Sections On Li, Be, B, C, N, O, And F, Mathew Parenti

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Nuclear reactions induced by 1.2 MeV deuteron on 9Be and 19F are studied with the goal of developing a practical analysis method for these light elements. In addition, the energy dependence of deuteron induced nuclear reactions on 7Li, 9Be, 11B, 12C, 14N, 16O, and 19F was measured. The energy dependence of these nuclear reactions allows the nuclear reaction analysis for these light elements to be corrected for the energy loss of the incident deuteron ions in the analyzed film.

Double Spin Asymmetry In D →(E→E'P)N, Michael Mayer Apr 2013

Double Spin Asymmetry In D →(E→E'P)N, Michael Mayer

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab, double spin asymmetries (A ∥) for quasi-elastic electron scattering off the deuteron have been measured at several beam energies. The data were collected during the EG1 experiment, which scattered longitudinally polarized electrons with energies from 1.6 to 5.8 GeV off a longitudinally polarized cryogenic ND3 target. The double spin asymmetries were measured as a function of photon virtuality Q2 (0.13-3.17 (GeV/c)2), missing momentum (0.0-0.5 GeV/c), and the angle between the (inferred) "spectator" neutron and the momentum transfer direction (θng). The results from EG1b are compared with a recent model …

Nuclear Electromagnetic Currents In Chiral Effective Field Theory, Saori Pastore Apr 2010

Nuclear Electromagnetic Currents In Chiral Effective Field Theory, Saori Pastore

Physics Theses & Dissertations

A nucleon-nucleon potential and consistent nuclear electromagnetic currents are derived in chiral effective field theory retaining pions and nucleons as explicit degrees of freedom. The calculation of the potential is carried out up to next-to-next-to leading order (N2LO), while the currents include up to N3LO corrections. The potential at N2 LO and currents at N3LO consist of two-pion-exchange and contact contributions. The currents are then utilized to study a number of low-energy electromagnetic observables induced by magnetic dipole transitions, such as the deuteron and trinucleon magnetic moments and the np, nd and n …

Spin Structure Of The Deuteron, Nevzat Guler Jan 2009

Spin Structure Of The Deuteron, Nevzat Guler

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Double spin asymmetries for the proton and the deuteron have been measured in the EG1b experiment using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. Longitudinally polarized electrons at energies 1.6, 2.5, 4.2 and 5.7 GeV were scattered from longitudinally polarized NH3 and ND3 targets. The double spin asymmetry A|| for the proton and the deuteron has been extracted from these data as a function of W and Q2 with unprecedented precision. The virtual photon asymmetry A1 and the spin structure function g1 can be calculated from these measurements by using parametrization to the world data for the virtual …

The ²H(E, E'P)N Reaction At High Four-Momentum Transfer, Hassan F. Ibrahim

Physics Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation presents the highest four-momentum transfer, Q2, quasielastic (xBj = 1) results from Experiment E01-020 which systematically explored the 2H(e, e'p)n reaction ("Electro-disintegration" of the deuteron) at three different four-momentum transfers, Q2 = 0.8, 2.1, and 3.5 GeV2 and missing momenta, pmiss = 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 GeV including separations of the longitudinal-transverse interference response function, RLT, and extraction of the longitudinal-transverse asymmetry, ALT. This systematic approach will help to understand the reaction mechanism and the deuteron structure down to the short …

Spin Structure Functions Of The Deuteron Measured With Clas In And Above The Resonance Region, Kahanawita G. Vipuli G. Dharmawardane Apr 2004

Spin Structure Functions Of The Deuteron Measured With Clas In And Above The Resonance Region, Kahanawita G. Vipuli G. Dharmawardane

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Spin structure functions of the nucleon in the region of large x and small to moderate Q2 continue to be of high current interest. The first moment of the spin structure function g1, Γ1, goes through a rapid transition from the photon point (Q2 = 0), where it is constrained by the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule, to the deep inelastic limit where it is sensitive to the nucleon spin fraction carried by quarks. The interesting behavior in the transition region is dominated by baryon resonance excitations. We concluded an experiment to measure these observables …

We extract the Bjorken integral 𝚪1p-n in the range 0.17 < Q2 <1.10 GeV2 from inclusive scattering of polarized electrons by polarized protons, deuterons, and 3He, for the region in which the integral is dominated by nucleon resonances. These data bridge the domains of the hadronic and partonic descriptions of the nucleon. In combination with earlier measurements at higher Q2, we extract the nonsinglet twist-4 matrix element f2.

Spin Structure Functions Of The Deuteron, Junho Yun

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Inclusive double spin asymmetries have been measured in [special characters omitted] using the CLAS detector and a polarized [special characters omitted] target at. Jefferson Lab in 1998. The goal of these measurements is to study the spin structure of the deuteron and the neutron in the low Q2 transition region between the real photon point, where the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule is expected to be satisfied, and the deep inelastic scattering limit. The analysis and the results for virtual photon asymmetries, the spin structure function [special characters omitted] and its first moment within a Q2 range of 0.2 …

Precision Measurement Of The Spin Structure Of The Proton And The Deuteron, Frank R. Wesselmann Apr 2000

Precision Measurement Of The Spin Structure Of The Proton And The Deuteron, Frank R. Wesselmann

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Experiment E155 at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center measured the spin structure functions g1 and g2 of the proton and deuteron using deep inelastic scattering of 50 GeV polarized electrons from dynamically polarized, solid 15NH3 and 6LiD targets. Three independent spectrometers, covering a large kinematic region, 0.014 < xBjorken < 0.9 and 1 < Q2 < 40 (GeV /c)2, detected 200 million events. A fully self-consistent and statistically sound approach to calculating radiative corrections was developed, providing well-defined statistical errors for the E155 data set. Also, a comprehensive fit to the global data set was created which simultaneously …

The neutron longitudinal and transverse asymmetries A1n and A2n have been extracted from deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by a polarized 3He target at incident energies of 19.42, 22.66, and 25.51 GeV. The measurement allows for the determination of the neutron spin structure functions g1n (x,Q2) and g2n(x,Q2) over the range 0.032 of 2 (GeV/c)2. The data are used for the evaluation of the Ellis-Jaffe and Bjorken sum rules. The neutron spin structure function g1n(x,Q2) is small and …
