Bps One-Branes In Five Dimensions, Moataz Emam

Moataz Emam

In a recent paper, we studied the scalar fields of the five dimensional N=2 hypermultiplets using the method of symplectic covariance. For static spherically symmetric backgrounds, we showed that exactly two possibilities exist and detailed one of them. In this paper, we present the second case: Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) one-branes carrying charge under the hypermultiplets. We find an explicitly symplectic solution of the fields in this background and derive the conditions required for a full spacetime understanding.

The Five Dimensional Universal Hypermultiplet And The Cosmological Constant Problem, Moataz Emam, Charles Canestaro Jan 2013

The Five Dimensional Universal Hypermultiplet And The Cosmological Constant Problem, Moataz Emam, Charles Canestaro

Moataz Emam

We model the universe as a 3-brane embedded in five dimensional spacetime with N=2 supersymmetry. The presence of the scalar fields of the universal hypermultiplet in the bulk results in a positive pressure effectively reducing the value of the cosmological constant and thereby providing a possible answer as to why the measured value of the cosmological constant is many orders of magnitude smaller than predicted from the vacuum energy. The solution allows for any number of parallel branes to exist and relates their cosmological constants (as well as matter densities and radiation pressures) to the value of the dilaton in …

Local Fractional Fourier Series With Application To Wave Equation In Fractal Vibrating String, Yang Xiaojun Nov 2012

Local Fractional Fourier Series With Application To Wave Equation In Fractal Vibrating String, Yang Xiaojun

Xiao-Jun Yang

We introduce the wave equation in fractal vibrating string in the framework of the local fractional calculus. Our particular attention is devoted to the technique of the local fractional Fourier series for processing these local fractional differential operators in a way accessible to applied scientists. By applying this technique we derive the local fractional Fourier series solution of the local fractional wave equation in fractal vibrating string and show the fundamental role of the Mittag- Leffler function.

Split-Complex Representation Of The Universal Hypermultiplet, Moataz Emam Jan 2011

Split-Complex Representation Of The Universal Hypermultiplet, Moataz Emam

Moataz Emam

Split-complex fields usually appear in the context of Euclidean supersymmetry. In this paper, we propose that this can be generalized to the non-Euclidean case and that, in fact, the split-complex representation may be the most natural way to formulate the scalar fields of the five dimensional universal hypermultiplet. We supplement earlier evidence of this by studying a specific class of solutions and explicitly showing that it seems to favor this formulation. We also argue that this is directly related to the symplectic structure of the general hypermultiplet fields arising from non-trivial Calabi-Yau moduli. As part of the argument, we find …

Commissioning And Performance Of The Cms Pixel Tracker With Cosmic Ray, Serguei Chatrchyan Muons, Stefan Spanier Jan 2010

Commissioning And Performance Of The Cms Pixel Tracker With Cosmic Ray, Serguei Chatrchyan Muons, Stefan Spanier

stefan spanier

The pixel detector of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment consists of three barrel layers and two disks for each endcap. The detector was installed in summer 2008, commissioned with charge injections, and operated in the 3.8 T magnetic field during cosmic ray data taking. This paper reports on the first running experience and presents results on the pixel tracker performance, which are found to be in line with the design specifications of this detector. The transverse impact parameter resolution measured in a sample of high momentum muons is 18 microns.

Observation Of Long-Range Near-Side Angular Correlations In Proton-Proton Collisions At The Lhc, Stefan Spanier Jan 2010

Observation Of Long-Range Near-Side Angular Correlations In Proton-Proton Collisions At The Lhc, Stefan Spanier

stefan spanier

Results on two-particle angular correlations for charged particles emitted in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 0.9, 2.36, and 7 TeV are presented, using data collected with the CMS detector over a broad range of pseudorapidity (eta) and azimuthal angle (phi). Short-range correlations in Delta(eta), which are studied in minimum bias events, are characterized using a simple "independent cluster" parametrization in order to quantify their strength (cluster size) and their extent in eta (cluster decay width). Long-range azimuthal correlations are studied differentially as a function of charged particle multiplicity and particle transverse momentum using a 980 inverse nb data set …

We describe results from a beam test of a telescope consisting of three planes of single-crystal, diamond pixel detectors. This telescope is a prototype for a small-angle luminosity monitor, the Pixel Luminosity Telescope (PLT), for CMS. We recorded the pixel addresses and pulse heights of all pixels over threshold as well as the fast-or signals from all three telescope planes. We present results on the telescope performance including occupancies, pulse heights, fast-or efficiencies and particle tracking. These results show that the PLT design meets all required specifications.

Measurement Of Cp Asymmetries In B0 --> KS0∏0∏0, B. Aubert, Stefan Spanier

stefan spanier

We present a preliminary measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry for the neutral B-meson decay into the CP = +1 final state K0 Sπ0π0, with K0 S → π+π− and π0 → γγ. We use a sample of approximately 227 million B-meson pairs recorded at the Υ(4S) resonance by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-Factory at SLAC. From a maximum likelihood fit we extract the mixing-induced CP-violation parameter SK0 Sπ0π0 = 0.84 ± 0.71 (stat) ± 0.08 (syst) and the direct CP-violation parameter CK0 Sπ0π0 = 0.27 ± 0.52 (stat) ± 0.13 (syst), where the first uncertainty is statistical …

Measurement Of Cp Asymmetries In B0 --> {Eff}K0 And B0 --> K+K-K0S Decays, B. Aubert, Stefan Spanier

stefan spanier

We measure the time-dependent CP asymmetry parameters in B0 --> K+ K- K0 based on a data sample of approximately 227 million B-meson pairs recorded at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II B-meson Factory at SLAC. We reconstruct two-body B0 decays to Phi(1020) K0S and Phi(1020)K0L, and the three-body decay K+ K- K0S with Phi(1020) K0S excluded. For the B0 --> Phi K0 decays, we measure sin(2 beta_{eff})(Phi K0) = +0.50 +/- 0.25(stat) +0.07/-0.04(syst). The B0 --> K+ K- K0S decays are dominated by K+ K- S-wave, as determined from an angular analysis; we measure sin(2 …
