A Period Examination Through Contemporary Energy Analysis Of Kevin Roche’S Fine Arts Center At University Of Massachusetts-Amherst, L Carl Fiocchi Jr

L. Carl Fiocchi

Studies of buildings belonging to a subset of Modernist architecture, Brutalism, have included discussions pertaining to social and architectural history, critical reception, tectonic form and geometry inspirations, material property selections, period technology limitations, and migration of public perceptions. Evaluations of Brutalist buildings’ energy related performances have been restricted to anecdotal observations with particular focus on the building type’s poor thermal performance, a result of the preferred construction method, i.e. monolithic reinforced concrete used as structure, interior finish and exterior finish. A valid criticism, but one that served to dismiss discussion that the possibility of other positive design strategies limiting energy …

Archive - A Data Management Program, James H. Devilbiss, C. Steven Whisnant, Yasmeen Shorish

Yasmeen Shorish

To meet funding agency requirements, a portable data management solution is presented for small research groups. The database created is simple, searchable, robust, and can reside across multiple hard drives. Employing a standard metadata schema for all data, the database ensures a high level of standardization, findability, and organization. The software is written in Perl, runs on UNIX, and presents a web-based user interface. It uses a fast, portable log-in scheme, making it easy to export to other locations. As research continues to move towards more open data sharing and reproducibility, this database solution is agile enough to accommodate external …

Flow Of Dna Solutions In A Microfluidic Gradual Contraction, Shelly Gulati, Susan J. Muller, Dorian Liepmann Jan 2015

Flow Of Dna Solutions In A Microfluidic Gradual Contraction, Shelly Gulati, Susan J. Muller, Dorian Liepmann

Shelly Gulati

The flow of λ-DNA solutions in a gradual micro-contraction was investigated using direct measurement techniques. The effects on DNA transport in microscale flows are significant because the flow behavior is influenced by macromolecular conformations, both viscous and elastic forces dominate inertial forces at this length scale, and the fully extended length of the molecule approaches the characteristic channel length wc (L/wc ∼ 0.13). This study examines the flow of semi-dilute and entangled DNA solutions in a gradual planar micro-contraction for low Reynolds numbers (3.7 × 10−6 < Re < 3.1 × 10−1) and high Weissenberg numbers (0.4 < Wi < …

Determination Of Kinetic Parameters From The Thermogravimetric Data Set Of Biomass Samples, Karol Postawa, Wojciech M. Budzianowski

Wojciech Budzianowski

This article describes methods of the determination of kinetic parameters from the thermogravimetric data set of biomass samples. It presents the methodology of the research, description of the needed equipment, and the method of analysis of thermogravimetric data. It describes both methodology of obtaining quantitative data such as kinetic parameters as well as of obtaining qualitative data like the composition of biomass. The study is focused mainly on plant biomass because it is easy in harvesting and preparation. Methodology is shown on the sample containing corn stover which is subsequently pyrolysed. The investigated sample show the kinetic of first order …

Data Curation Is For Everyone! The Case For Master's And Baccalaureate Institutional Engagement With Data Curation, Yasmeen Shorish Dec 2012

Data Curation Is For Everyone! The Case For Master's And Baccalaureate Institutional Engagement With Data Curation, Yasmeen Shorish

Yasmeen Shorish

This article describes the fundamental challenges to data curation, how these challenges may be compounded for smaller institutions, and how data management is an essential and manageable component of data curation. Data curation is often discussed within the confines of large, research universities. As a result, master’s and baccalaureate institutions may be left with the impression that they cannot engage with data curation. However, by proactively engaging with faculty, libraries of all sizes can build closer relationships and help educate faculty on data documentation and organization best practices. Experiences from one master’s comprehensive institution as it engages with data management …

Review Of Treatment Of Error In Second Language Student Writing By Dana R. Ferris, Melanie C. González Aug 2012

Review Of Treatment Of Error In Second Language Student Writing By Dana R. Ferris, Melanie C. González

Melanie González

Many people are familiar with the saying “anything worth doing is worth doing well.” Writing and composition teachers could argue the same could be said of handling errors in students’ writing. In the second edition of Treatment of Error in Second Language Student Writing (2011), Dana R. Ferris provides a valuable handbook for teachers of second language (L2) writers on how to effectively treat errors in L2 student compositions and develop their accuracy and independence as writers. Throughout the book, Ferris delivers a clear and evidence-based argument that providing corrective feedback united with instruction and self-editing strategies improves student writing. …

Hydrogen Production From Biogas By Oxy-Reforming: Reaction System Analysis, Aleksandra Terlecka, Wojciech M. Budzianowski Dec 2011

Hydrogen Production From Biogas By Oxy-Reforming: Reaction System Analysis, Aleksandra Terlecka, Wojciech M. Budzianowski

Wojciech Budzianowski

Oxy-reforming is emerging as an interesting alternative to conventional methods of hydrogen generation. The current article characterises this process through analysis of individual reactions: SMR (steam methane reforming), WGS (water gas shift) and CPO (catalytic partial oxidation). Analyses relate to optimisation of thermal conditions thus enabling cost-effectivenes of the process.

Fractional Trigonometric Functions In Complex-Valued Space: Applications Of Complex Number To Local Fractional Calculus Of Complex Function, Yang Xiao-Jun

Xiao-Jun Yang

This paper presents the fractional trigonometric functions in complex-valued space and proposes a short outline of local fractional calculus of complex function in fractal spaces.

Problems Of Local Fractional Definite Integral Of The One-Variable Non-Differentiable Function, Yang Xiao-Jun Dec 2008

Problems Of Local Fractional Definite Integral Of The One-Variable Non-Differentiable Function, Yang Xiao-Jun

Xiao-Jun Yang

It is proposed that local fractional calculas introduced by Kolwankar and Gangal is extended by the concept of Jumarie’s fractional calculus and local fractional definite integral is redefined. The properties and the theorems of local fractional calculus are discussed in this paper.

Report Of The Commission To Assess The Threat To The United States From Emp Attack: Critical National Infrastructures, William R. Graham Jul 2008

Report Of The Commission To Assess The Threat To The United States From Emp Attack: Critical National Infrastructures, William R. Graham

George H Baker

The physical and social fabric of the United States is sustained by a system of systems; a complex and dynamic network of interlocking and interdependent infrastructures (“critical national infrastructures”) whose harmonious functioning enables the myriad actions, transactions, and information flow that undergird the orderly conduct of civil society in this country. The vulnerability of these frastructures to threats — deliberate, accidental, and acts of nature — is the focus of greatly heightened concern in the current era, a process accelerated by the events of 9/11 and recent hurricanes, including Katrina and Rita. This report presents the results of the Commission’s …

Thermal Roots Of Correlation-Based Complexity, Philip Fraundorf Dec 2007

Thermal Roots Of Correlation-Based Complexity, Philip Fraundorf

Phil Fraundorf

Bayesian maxent lets one integrate thermal physics and information theory points of view in the quantitative study of complex systems. Since net surprisal (a free energy analog for measuring “departures from expected”) allows one to place second law constraints on mutual information (a multimoment measure of correlations), it makes a quantitative case for the role of reversible thermalization in the natural history of invention, and suggests multiscale strategies to monitor standing crop as well. It prompts one to track evolved complexity starting from live astrophysically observed processes, rather than only from evidence of past events. Various gradients and boundaries that …

Solving Ill-Posed Problems With Artificial Neural Networks, Arun D. Kulkarni Dec 1990

Solving Ill-Posed Problems With Artificial Neural Networks, Arun D. Kulkarni

Arun Kulkarni

With many physical problems, measurement of spectral distribution, cosmic radiation, aerial and satellite imaging indirect sensing/recording devices are used. In many of these cases, the recording systems can be modeled by a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind. An inversion of the kernel representing a system, in the presence of noise, is an ill-posed problem. The direct inversion often yields an unacceptable solution. In this paper, we suggest an artificial neural network (ANN) architecture to solve certain kinds of ill-posed problems. The weights in the model are initialized using eigen-vectors and eigen-values of the kernel matrix that characterize the …
