The Effects Of Sea Level Rise On Tidal Wetlands In The Lynnhaven River Watershed, Marcia Berman, Harry Berquist, Center For Coastal Resources Management, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science

This study classified tidal wetlands for the Lynnhaven Watershed using remote sensing techniques and high resolution imagery from 2007. This updated delineation of wetlands, was used in conjunction with a simplistic geospatial elevation model to quantify the potential loss of wetlands under various sea level rise scenarios.The study revealed that using conservative estimates of sea level rise, nearly all wetlands would be lost by the year 2100. Projecting sea level rise into the future can be considered speculative, nevertheless such predictions are necessary to begin managing for and planning for climate change impacts. The Chesapeake Bay Breakwater Database is being developed by personnel in the Virginia Institute of Marine Science’s (VIMS) Shoreline Studies Program for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) in order to:

1) document breakwater system performance around Chesapeake Bay relative to predictions

2) develop guidelines for breakwaters in sand limited and fetch limited systems such as estuaries, reservoirs, lakes and bays.

Over the past two years we have been developing computer programs to investigate various scientific visualization techniques as applied to estuarine data. The original impetus was to be able to visualize the results of the three-dimensional hydrodynamic model under development at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William and Mary (VIMS). We quickly recognized the superior ability of certain graphic approaches, especially pseudocolor animation, to efficiently transmit a tremendous amount of information to the viewer, allowing the scientist to gain an insight into the dynamics of the data not otherwise available.
