Land Use Effects On Ground Water Quality In Carbonate Rock Terrain, Kenneth F. Steele, James C. Adamski Jun 1987

Land Use Effects On Ground Water Quality In Carbonate Rock Terrain, Kenneth F. Steele, James C. Adamski

Technical Reports

A control site with a natural setting and an experimental site with significant agriculture land use were studied in the Ozark Region of Arkansas in order to determine the effect of land use on water quality in a carbonate rock terrain. The vast majority of the two sites have the Boone Limestone exposed which combined with the underlying St. Joe is the major aquifer for drinking water in the area. The sites also are similar in terms of lineament patterns (number, length and orientation), soil, slope and vegetation. Ground water samples were collected primarily from springs during three seasons (late …

Growth Rate Of Stony Corals Of Broward County, Florida: Effects From Past Beach Renourishment Projects, Richard E. Dodge, Broward County Erosion Prevention District Environmental Quality Control Board

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

The skeletal growth of hermatypic (reef-building) corals is a sensitive indicator of environmental conditions and perturbations. In particular, excessive sedimentation and turbidity act to depress coral growth because energy expenditure is required to remove sediment and because turbidity reduces light energy necessary for coral health and nutrition.

Normalized annual growth (linear skeletal extension) rates of Broward County, Florida reef-building corals were over 16 years (1985-1970). Star corals (Montastrea annularis) and brain corals (Diploria labyrinthiformis) were collected from each of four reef sites at two depths (9m and 18m). Collection areas were located in the vicinity of …

Development Of A Combined Quanity And Quality Model For Optimal Groundwater Management, R. C. Peralta, J. Solaimanian, S. A. Prathapar, C. L. Griffis

Technical Reports

Presented is a procedure for incorporating solute transport as linear constraints within computer models for optimizing regional groundwater extraction strategies. The MODCON modelling procedure uses linear goal programming, embedded linearized equations for flow and solute transport and a MOC simulation model. Assumed is 2D flow and solute transport and a dispersed conservative contaminant. The MODCON procedure develops steady groundwater extraction strategies that will satisfy future groundwater quality constraints while simultaneously causing future piezometric heads to be as close to current heads as possible. The procedure is applied to a 160 square mile area in southeastern Arkansas.

Oil Spill Liability And Compensation: A Review Of The Existing Mechanisms And A Look At The Future, Gary A. Reiter

Theses and Major Papers

This study provides an examination of the existing United States Federal laws and international regimes regarding oil spill liability and compensation, and the manner in which they have been implemented by regulation and policy. The presentation concludes with discussion of and arguments concerning various proposed Federal comprehensive liability and compensation legislation. Emphasis is placed on the unsuccessful legislative proposals of the 99th Congress and the effects that similar legislation, if passed by the 100th congress, may have on current response policies and Federal and state governments. In particular, the effects of the proposed legislation on state's sovereignty and response operations …

Comparison Of Littoral And Limnetic Zooplankton Communities Of Lake Mead, Patrick Joseph Sollberger May 1987

Comparison Of Littoral And Limnetic Zooplankton Communities Of Lake Mead, Patrick Joseph Sollberger

Publications (WR)

Microfaunal communities were studied in littoral (inshore) and limnetic (offshore) areas of the lower basin in Lake Mead to compare species composition and abundance between the two zones. Planktonic forms (zooplankton) dominated inshore and offshore habitats and the occurrence of littoral species was low. Therefore, high similarity in zooplankton species composition was found among all sampling stations. This was perhaps due to two main factors: (i) the physical and chemical environment among the stations were very similar and (ii) the lack of aquatic vegetation in the littoral zone reduced the occurrence of littoral species.

Although species composition did not vary …

The Military Sealift Command: Their Potential Role In Providing Military Logistic Support To The Persian Gulf, Kevin W. Nicholas Apr 1987

The Military Sealift Command: Their Potential Role In Providing Military Logistic Support To The Persian Gulf, Kevin W. Nicholas

Theses and Major Papers

The ultimate goal of the U.S. Maritime Strategy is to project power into all the oceans of the world. By projecting power over this vast a geographic area, the U.S. is able to provide a deterrent force that will inhibit the development of a significant hostile military action, anywhere in the world. The ability to support this global peacekeeping force hinges on the capability of the U.S. to provide a strong logistic support organization. From a waterborne perspective, the Indian Ocean is the one geographic area of the world that presents the greatest logistic challenge. The U.S. Navy and the …

A Simple Numerical Model For The Study Of Baroclinic Estuarine Shelf Interactions, Thomas J. Berger Apr 1987

A Simple Numerical Model For The Study Of Baroclinic Estuarine Shelf Interactions, Thomas J. Berger

OES Theses and Dissertations

A one and a half layer nonlinear f-plane numerical model was used to study estuarine-shelf interactions. The single active layer covered a domain consisting of a 100 km long by 20 km wide channel discharging onto a 100 km wide by 300 km long shelf. Channel and "western” shelf boundaries were no-slip, "eastern" or oceanic boundary was free-slip and "northern" and "southern" shelf boundaries were open. The channel was forced with a constant inflow velocity spun up from 2 cm s-1 to 27 cm s-1over five days. The model initial conditions were a flat interface at …

Groin-Associated Rip Currents Measured Using A New Digital Current Meter, Dennis L. Lundberg Apr 1987

Groin-Associated Rip Currents Measured Using A New Digital Current Meter, Dennis L. Lundberg

OES Theses and Dissertations

Rip currents have often been noted in physical model studies of groins and their effectiveness. Nevertheless, detailed field investigations of rip currents along a groin wall have not been heretofore conducted. A new digital current meter system was designed and built to study the groin-associated rip currents in a test groin compartment at Willoughby Spit, Norfolk, VA. Six ducted impeller current meters are controlled by a data acquisition system that utilizes an onboard microprocessor and solid state memory. The new system provides high quality data on horizontal water velocities associated with wave action. The velocities stored are time mean velocities …

Response Characteristics Of A Short Range, High Resolution, Digital Sonar Altimeter, Malcolm O. Green, John D. Boon Mar 1987

Response Characteristics Of A Short Range, High Resolution, Digital Sonar Altimeter, Malcolm O. Green, John D. Boon

Reports

The Datasonics Model ASA-920 digital sonar altimeter (DSA) is a compact, high frequency (1 MHz), short range (0.5 to 5 m) underwater sonar device originally designed as an altimeter for submersib1es. Wright et al. (1986) have used the DSA successfully to measure changes in relative bed elevation at a point on the shoreface prior to and during a storm. Fixed to a rigid mounting on the seabed, the DSA produces a digital output that is proportional to the transducer elevation above the bed. The purpose of this report is to describe the response characteristics of the DSA.

Evaluation Of New Pasture Legume Species In Terms Of Summer Feeding Value And Effects On Wool Production., S E. Flecker, C W. Thorn, J. B. Rowe, Tess Casson

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

86KA71, Pasture legumes improve the feeding value of summer pastures in a mediterranean-type environment by maintaining the protein intake of grazing animals over the dry summer period, much of which comes from the ingestion of legume burr (A.D. Wilson and N.L. Hindley, 1968). Some of the most important species of pasture legumes to have been released commercially are Trifolium subterraneum (sub.clover), Medicago truncatula (barrel medic) and Medicago polymorpha (burr medic) (D.B. Purser, G.B. Taylor and W.J. Collins, 1987). What little information is available on the feeding value of these species suggests that barrel medic pod (H. Brownlee, 1973) and dry …

The Effect Of Soil Acidity On Barley, P J. Dolling, T. D. Haines Jan 1987

The Effect Of Soil Acidity On Barley, P J. Dolling, T. D. Haines

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Three liming experiments were established to confirm previous estimates of the critical soil acidity level for barley. Two experiments studying the effect of depth of incorporation on the effectiveness of lime, established in 1986, were continued in 1987.
The results from the three liming experiments established this year supported the conclusion that barley is affected by soil acidity at pH's around 4.2 and 4.3 (CaC12) and that depth of this acid layer is important.
Significant lime responses were obtained at the Katanning depth of lime incorporation site but conclusions can not be made because of possible mixing of …
