For every β ∈ (0,∞), β ≠ 1, we prove that a positive measure subset A of the unit square contains a point (x0, y0) such that A nontrivially intersects curves y − y0 = a(x −x0)β for a whole interval I ⊆ (0,∞) of parameters a ∈ I . A classical Nikodym set counterexample prevents one to take β = 1, which is the case of straight lines. Moreover, for a planar set A of positive density, we show that the interval I can be arbitrarily large on the logarithmic scale. These results can …

We study optimal polynomial approximants (OPAs) in the classical Hardy spaces on the unit disk, Hp (1 < p < ∞). For fixed f ∈ Hp and n ∈ N, the OPA of degree n associated to f is the polynomial which minimizes the quantity ∥qf −1∥p over all complex polynomials q of degree less than or equal to n. We begin with some examples which illustrate, when p ≠ 2, how the Banach space geometry makes the above minimization problem interesting. The University of Omaha math department's Problem of the Week was taken over in Fall 2019 from faculty by the authors. The structure: each semester (Fall and Spring), three problems are given per week for twelve weeks, with each problem worth ten points - mimicking the structure of arguably the most well-regarded university math competition around, the Putnam Competition, with prizes awarded to top-scorers at semester's end. The weekly competition was halted midway through Spring 2020 due to COVID-19, but relaunched again in Fall 2021, with massive changes.

This work investigates several geometric properties of the solutions of the multi-affine polynomials. Chapters 1, 2 discuss two different notions of invariant circles. Chapter 3 gives several loci of polynomials of degree three. A locus of a complex polynomial p(z) is a minimal, with respect to inclusion, set that contains at least one point of every solution of the polarization of the polynomial. The study of such objects allows one to improve upon know results about the location of zeros and critical points of complex polynomials, see for example [22] and [24]. This thesis deals with the problem of approximating germs of real or complex analytic spaces by Nash or algebraic germs. In particular, we investigate the problem of approximating analytic germs in various ways while preserving the Hilbert-Samuel function, which is of importance in the resolution of singularities. We first show that analytic germs that are complete intersections can be arbitrarily closely approximated by algebraic germs which are complete intersections with the same Hilbert-Samuel function. The intricate monochromatic embroidery that graced the collars and cuffs of Renaissance nobility and domestic materials from that era has been little studied beyond the historical costuming and crafting communities. This style, known as blackwork, for it was traditionally done in black silk on white linen, exemplifies how complex and visually-appealing designs can arise from repetition of simple forms, often demonstrating the fractal property of self-similarity. Though most blackwork patterns are not true fractals, fractal analysis offers a means of objectively quantifying their complexity and new lens through which to examine this embroidery technique. In Calculus we learned that Sum^{n}_{k=1} k = [n(n+1)]/2 , that Sum^{n}_{k=1} k^2 = [n(n+1)(2n+1)]/6 , and that Sum^{n}_{k=1} k^{3} = (n(n+1)/2)^{2}. These formulas are useful when solving for the area below quadratic or cubic function over an interval [a, b]. This tedious process, solving for areas under a quadratic or a cubic, served as motivation for the introduction of Riemman integrals. For the overzealous math student, these steps were replaced by a simpler method of evaluating antiderivatives at the endpoints a and b. From my recollection, a former instructor informed us to do the value of memorizing these formulas. …

We examine two dimensional properties of vortex shedding past elliptical cylinders through numerical simulations. Specifically, we investigate the vortex formation length in the Reynolds number regime 10 to 100 for elliptical bodies of aspect ratio in the range 0.4 to 1.4. Our computations reveal that in the steady flow regime, the change in the vortex length follows a linear profile with respect to the Reynolds number, while in the unsteady regime, the time averaged vortex length decreases in an exponential manner with increasing Reynolds number. The transition in profile is used to identify the critical Reynolds number which marks the …

In recent work, two new cohomologies were introduced for almost complex manifolds: the so-called J-cohomology and N-cohomology [CKT17]. For the case of integrable (complex) structures, the former cohomology was already considered in [DGMS75], and the latter agrees with de Rham cohomology. In this dissertation, using ideas from [CW18], we introduce spectral sequences for these two cohomologies, showing the two cohomologies have natural bigradings. We show the spectral sequence for the J-cohomology converges at the second page whenever the almost complex structure is integrable, and explain how both fit in a natural diagram involving Bott-Chern cohomology and the Frolicher spectral sequence. …

Knot polynomials are polynomial equations that are assigned to knot projections based on the mathematical properties of the knots. They are also invariants, or properties of knots that do not change under ambient isotopy. In other words, given an invariant α for a knot K, α is the same for any projection of K. We will define these knot polynomials and explain the processes by which one finds them for a given knot projection. We will also compare the relative usefulness of these polynomials.

For any half-space containing the point $c$, the amount of points in that half-space is no bigger than $\frac{1}{d+1}$ of the whole set. This can be related to how close can any hyperplane containing the point $c$ comes to equipartitioning for a given shape $S$. The objective of the study is to investigate the behaviour of the inner products of vector-valued Poincare series, for large weight, associated to submanifolds of a quotient of the complex unit ball and how vector-valued automorphic forms could be constructed via Poincare series. In addition, it provides a proof of that vector-valued Poincare series on an irreducible bounded symmetric domain span the space of vector-valued automorphic forms.

In this article, we study the fractional diffusion equation with spatial Riesz fractional derivative. The continuation of the solution of this fractional equation to the solution of the corresponding integer order equation is proved. The series solution is obtained based on properties of Riesz fractional derivative operator and utilizing the optimal homotopy analysis method (OHAM). Numerical simulations are presented to validate the method and to show the effect of changing the fractional derivative parameter on the solution behavior.

Two Riemann surfaces S1 and S2 with conformal G-actions have topologically equivalent actions if there is a homeomorphism h : S1 -> S2 which intertwines the actions. A weaker equivalence may be defined by comparing the representations of G on the spaces of holomorphic q-differentials Hq(S1) and Hq(S2). In this note we study the differences between topological equivalence and Hq equivalence of prime cyclic actions, where S1/G and S2/G have genus zero.

Atanassov introduced the degree of non membership/falsehood (f) in 1986 and defined the intuitionistic fuzzy set. Smarandache introduced the degree of indeterminacy/neutrality (i) as independent component in 1995 (published in 1998) and defined the neutrosophic set on three components (t,i,f) = (truth, indeterminacy, falsehood). The words “neutrosophy” and “neutrosophic” were coined/invented by F. Smarandache in his 1998 book.
