Empirical Likelihood-Based Nonparametric Inference For The Difference Between Two Partial Aucs, Yan Yuan
Empirical Likelihood-Based Nonparametric Inference For The Difference Between Two Partial Aucs, Yan Yuan
Mathematics Theses
Compare the accuracy of two continuous-scale tests is increasing important when a new test is developed. The traditional approach that compares the entire areas under two Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves is not sensitive when two ROC curves cross each other. A better approach to compare the accuracy of two diagnostic tests is to compare the areas under two ROC curves (AUCs) in the interested specificity interval. In this thesis, we have proposed bootstrap and empirical likelihood (EL) approach for inference of the difference between two partial AUCs. The empirical likelihood ratio for the difference between two partial AUCs is …
Application Of The Green’S Function For Solutions Of Third Order Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems, Shannon Mathis Morrison
Application Of The Green’S Function For Solutions Of Third Order Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems, Shannon Mathis Morrison
Masters Theses
Green’s functions are used to prove a collection of existence and uniqueness theorems for third order nonlinear boundary value problems. Several examples of Green’s functions for both second and third order boundary value problems are given. Various applications of the existence theorems are presented in detail.
A Study Of The Homology Of Subset Spaces And Their Connection To The K-Sat Problem In Computer Science, Oliver J. Thistlethwaite
A Study Of The Homology Of Subset Spaces And Their Connection To The K-Sat Problem In Computer Science, Oliver J. Thistlethwaite
Masters Theses
It is the purpose of this thesis to introduce an idea for studying questions of computer science via topology. We begin by describing the homology of a certain space constructed from a given subset of the power set of any finite set. We then discuss how this relates to the k-SAT problem in computer science.
We shall use computers as a tool to calculate the homology groups as well as the Euler characteristic of some of these spaces. Due to the sheer number of calcu- lations needed, doing the necessary computations by hand is both impractical and impossible.

Transformations Of Differential Equations And Applications, Despina Andrea Stavri
Transformations Of Differential Equations And Applications, Despina Andrea Stavri
Masters Theses
The Sturm-Liouville problems introduced by Jacques Charles Francois Sturm and Joseph Liouville in the 19thcentury are very important in applied mathematics. Singular Sturm-Liouville problems and two physical problems are discussed. The two physical problems are solved using two methods: Exact and asymptotic solutions. Also, the Sturm-Liouville problem's are classified using the Weyl-Kodaira Theorem. A general transformation of a third order differential equation is introduced. Oscillation and non-oscillation theorems on an infinite interval for a third order differential equation are stated. New versions of these theorems are introduced for the special cases and examples are given to illustrate them. …
A Comparison Of The Deck Group And The Fundamental Group On Uniform Spaces Obtained By Gluing, Raymond David Phillippi
A Comparison Of The Deck Group And The Fundamental Group On Uniform Spaces Obtained By Gluing, Raymond David Phillippi
Doctoral Dissertations
We de…ne a uniformity on a glued space under uniformly continuous attachment maps. If the component spaces are uniform coverable then the resulting glued space is uniform coverable. We consider examples including the glued uniformity on a …nite dimensional CW complex which is shown to be uniformly coverable. For one dimensional CWcomplexes, the resulting deck group is equivalent to the fundamental group. Other properties of the deck group are explored.
Transmission Dynamics Of Avian Influenza Among Poultry With And Without Vaccination, Qiao Liang
Transmission Dynamics Of Avian Influenza Among Poultry With And Without Vaccination, Qiao Liang
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
The continuing avian influenza (AI) out break that began in late 2003 and early 2004 has been disastrous for the poultry industry worldwide. It has resulted in severe socio-economic damage, and it has raised serious concerns for general public health. In this research, we use mathematics to analyze transmission dynamics of AI among poultry. We use a status-based approach to construct systems of differential equations to describe virus transmission dynamics. We develop theoretical means to eradicate the spread of the disease, and we calculate the size of healthy and infected populations during an AI outbreak, and the final population size …
The Minimum Rank Problem Over Finite Fields, Jason Nicholas Grout
The Minimum Rank Problem Over Finite Fields, Jason Nicholas Grout
Theses and Dissertations
We have two main results. Our first main result is a sharp bound for the number of vertices in a minimal forbidden subgraph for the graphs having minimum rank at most 3 over the finite field of order 2. We also list all 62 such minimal forbidden subgraphs and show that many of these are minimal forbidden subgraphs for any field. Our second main result is a structural characterization of all graphs having minimum rank at most k for any k over any finite field. This characterization leads to a very strong connection to projective geometry and we apply projective …
Infinite Product Group, Keith G. Penrod
Infinite Product Group, Keith G. Penrod
Theses and Dissertations
The theory of infinite multiplication has been studied in the case of the Hawaiian earring group, and has been seen to simplify the description of that group. In this paper we try to extend the theory of infinite multiplication to other groups and give a few examples of how this can be done. In particular, we discuss the theory as applied to symmetric groups and braid groups. We also give an equivalent definition to K. Eda's infinitary product as the fundamental group of a modified wedge product.
Graduate Teaching Assistants' Statistical Knowledge For Teaching, Jennifer Ann Noll
Graduate Teaching Assistants' Statistical Knowledge For Teaching, Jennifer Ann Noll
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation explores graduate teaching assistants’ (TAs’) statistical knowledge for teaching. Data collection methods that enabled the exploration of TA s’ statistical knowledge for teaching include: (a) a task-based web survey administered to 68 TAs from 18 universities across the United States; and, (b) a series of three taskbased interviews with a subset of five TAs from the larger survey population. Through and Strauss, 1967), I investigated the ways in which TAs reason about sampling tasks, and how they think about teaching and student learning in relation to sampling ideas. Building on past research in statistics education on K-12 and …

Pipe Diagrams For Thompson's Group F, Aaron L. Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
We review the definition and standard description of Thompson's Group F. We define the set of pipe diagrams and show that this set forms a group isomorphic to F. We use pipe diagrams to prove two theorems about giving a minimal representation for an arbitrary element of F.
Stochastic Modeling Of Retail Mortgage Loans Based On Past Due, Prepaid, And Default States, Chang Liu
Stochastic Modeling Of Retail Mortgage Loans Based On Past Due, Prepaid, And Default States, Chang Liu
Doctoral Dissertations
Stochastic models were developed that provide important measures related to retail mortgages and credit cards for the management of a bank. Based on Markov theory, two models were developed that predict mortgage portfolio size and expected duration of stay in each of the states, which are defined according to the criteria of Basel Accord II and the Federal Reserve Bank. Also, to facilitate comparisons among different types of credit products and different time periods, a model was developed to generate a health index for a retail mortgage. This model could be easily extended, using multivariate regression or multivariate time series …
On The Use Of Quasi-Newton Methods For The Minimization Of Convex Quadratic Splines, William Howard Thomas Ii
On The Use Of Quasi-Newton Methods For The Minimization Of Convex Quadratic Splines, William Howard Thomas Ii
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
In reformulating a strictly convex quadratic program with simple bound constraints as the unconstrained minimization of a strictly convex quadratic spline, established algorithms can be implemented with relaxed differentiability conditions. In this work, the positive definite secant update method of Broyden, Fletcher, Goldfarb, and Shanno (BFGS) is investigated as a tool to solve the unconstrained minimization problem. It is shown that there is a linear convergence rate and, for nondegenerate problems, the process terminates in a finite number of iterations. Numerical examples are provided.
The Fock Space And Related Bergman Type Integral Operators, Ovidiu Furdui
The Fock Space And Related Bergman Type Integral Operators, Ovidiu Furdui
Dissertations
In this thesis we study the boundedness of a general class of integral operators induced by the kernel functions of Fock spaces. More precisely, for a, b, and c real parameters we study the action of [Special characters omitted.] and [Special characters omitted.] on Lp ([Special characters omitted.] ,dvs ), where dvs ( z ) = [Special characters omitted.] is the Gaussian probability measure on [Special characters omitted.] . We prove that, when p > 1, respectively p = 1, these operators are bounded if and only if p satisfies a quadratic, respectively a linear, inequality. The …
Measures Of Travers Ability In Graphs, Futaba Okamoto
Measures Of Travers Ability In Graphs, Futaba Okamoto

For a connected graph G of order n ≥ 3 and a cyclic ordering sc : v 1, v2,..., vn, v n+1 = v1 of vertices of G, the number d(sc) is defined by d(sc) = i=1n d(vi, vi +1), where d(vi, vi +1) is the distance between vi and vi+1 in G for 1 ≤ i ≤ n. The Hamiltonian number h(G) and upper Hamiltonian number h +(G) of G are defined as h(G) = min{d(sc)} and h+(G) = max{d(sc)}, respectively, where the minimum and maximum are taken over all cyclic orderings s c of vertices of G. For …
Problems Related To Efficacy Measurement And Analyses, Sibabrata Banerjee
Problems Related To Efficacy Measurement And Analyses, Sibabrata Banerjee
Dissertations
In clinical research it is very common to compare two treatments on the basis of an efficacy variable. More specifically, if X and Y denote the responses of patients on the two treatments A and B, respectively, the quantity P(Y>X) (which can be called the probabilistic index for the Effect Size), is of interest in clinical statistics. The objective of this study is to derive an efficacy measure that would compare two treatments more informatively and objectively compared to the earlier approaches. Kernel density estimation is a useful non-parametric method that has not been well utilized as an applied …
Prediction Of Mrna Polyadenylation Sites In The Human Genome And Mathematical Modeling Of Alternative Polyadenylation, Yiming Cheng
Prediction Of Mrna Polyadenylation Sites In The Human Genome And Mathematical Modeling Of Alternative Polyadenylation, Yiming Cheng
Dissertations
Messenger RNA (mRNA) polyadenylation plays many important roles in the cell, such as transcription termination, mRNA stability and transportation, and mRNA translation in eukaryotic cells. A large number of human and mouse genes have multiple polyadenylation sites (referred to as poly(A) sites) that lead to variable transcripts, some of which are translated into various protein products with different functions. However, the details about when and where the polyadenylation occurs, and how pre-mRNA switches from one poly(A) site to another are still unknown. This kind of 3 '-end processing can be regulated by the cell environment, cell cycle stage, and tissue …
On Connections Between Univalent Harmonic Functions, Symmetry Groups, And Minimal Surfaces, Stephen M. Taylor
On Connections Between Univalent Harmonic Functions, Symmetry Groups, And Minimal Surfaces, Stephen M. Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
We survey standard topics in elementary differential geometry and complex analysis to build up the necessary theory for studying applications of univalent harmonic function theory to minimal surfaces. We then proceed to consider convex combination harmonic mappings of the form f=sf_1+(1-s) f_2 and give conditions on when f lifts to a one-parameter family of minimal surfaces via the Weierstrauss-Enneper representation formula. Finally, we demand two minimal surfaces M and M' be locally isometric, formulate a system of partial differential equations modeling this constraint, and calculate their symmetry group. The group elements generate transformations that when applied to a prescribed harmonic …
A Qualitative Analysis Of Hybrid Control Systems, Anca Georgeta Williams
A Qualitative Analysis Of Hybrid Control Systems, Anca Georgeta Williams
Dissertations and Theses
Hybrid Control Systems are increasingly investigated as models for control systems where the interaction between continuous and discrete processes is tightly integrated. As yet, there is no general agreement as to what constitutes a canonical hybrid system. Rather various subclasses of systems combining continuous evolution and discrete event characteristics are analyzed for each application. In this dissertation we first unify the presentation of hybrid systems with a rich model which encompasses most examples of interest. We classify the available results and show how they fit together within the different subcategories. In the main part of the dissertation we prove that …
Alliance Partitions In Graphs., Jason Lachniet
Alliance Partitions In Graphs., Jason Lachniet
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For a graph G=(V,E), a nonempty subset S contained in V is called a defensive alliance if for each v in S, there are at least as many vertices from the closed neighborhood of v in S as in V-S. If there are strictly more vertices from the closed neighborhood of v in S as in V-S, then S is a strong defensive alliance. A (strong) defensive alliance is called global if it is also a dominating set of G. The alliance partition number (respectively, strong …
Empirical Likelihood Confidence Intervals For The Sensitivity Of A Continuous-Scale Diagnostic Test, Angela Elaine Davis
Empirical Likelihood Confidence Intervals For The Sensitivity Of A Continuous-Scale Diagnostic Test, Angela Elaine Davis
Mathematics Theses
Diagnostic testing is essential to distinguish non-diseased individuals from diseased individuals. More accurate tests lead to improved treatment and thus reduce medical mistakes. The sensitivity and specificity are two important measurements for the diagnostic accuracy of a diagnostic test. When the test results are continuous, it is of interest to construct a confidence interval for the sensitivity at a fixed level of specificity for the test. In this thesis, we propose three empirical likelihood intervals for the sensitivity. Simulation studies are conducted to compare the empirical likelihood based confidence intervals with the existing normal approximation based confidence interval. Our studies …
An Extension Of Ramsey's Theorem To Multipartite Graphs, Brian Michael Cook
An Extension Of Ramsey's Theorem To Multipartite Graphs, Brian Michael Cook
Mathematics Theses
Ramsey Theorem, in the most simple form, states that if we are given a positive integer l, there exists a minimal integer r(l), called the Ramsey number, such any partition of the edges of K_r(l) into two sets, i.e. a 2-coloring, yields a copy of K_l contained entirely in one of the partitioned sets, i.e. a monochromatic copy of Kl. We prove an extension of Ramsey's Theorem, in the more general form, by replacing complete graphs by multipartite graphs in both senses, as the partitioned set and as the desired monochromatic graph. More formally, given integers l and k, there …
Bayesian Approach To Three-Arm Non Inferiority Trials, Marcus Chenier Britton
Bayesian Approach To Three-Arm Non Inferiority Trials, Marcus Chenier Britton
Mathematics Theses
In non-inferiority trials, the goal is to show how an experimental treatment is statistically and clinically not inferior to the active control. The three-arm clinical trial usually recommended for non-inferiority trials by the FDA. The three-arm trial consists of a placebo, reference, and an experimental treatment. The three-arm trial shows the superiority of the reference over the placebo and comparison of the reference to an experimental treatment. In this paper, I will assess a non-inferiority trial with Bayesian methods. By employing Bayesian analysis, the parameters are random and assign vague prior distributions. I will compare the models involving different prior …
Omnibus Tests For Comparison Of Competing Risks With Covariate Effects Via Additive Risk Model, Duytrac Vu Nguyen
Omnibus Tests For Comparison Of Competing Risks With Covariate Effects Via Additive Risk Model, Duytrac Vu Nguyen
Mathematics Theses
It is of interest that researchers study competing risks in which subjects may fail from any one of K causes. Comparing any two competing risks with covariate effects is very important in medical studies. This thesis develops omnibus tests for comparing cause-specific hazard rates and cumulative incidence functions at specified covariate levels. In the thesis, the omnibus tests are derived under the additive risk model, that is an alternative to the proportional hazard model, with by a weighted difference of estimates of cumulative cause-specific hazard rates. Simultaneous confidence bands for the difference of two conditional cumulative incidence functions are also …
Spectrally Arbitrary And Inertially Arbitrary Sign Pattern Matrices, Nilay Sezin Demir
Spectrally Arbitrary And Inertially Arbitrary Sign Pattern Matrices, Nilay Sezin Demir
Mathematics Theses
A sign pattern(matrix) is a matrix whose entries are from the set {+,-,0}. An n x n sign pattern matrix is a spectrally arbitrary pattern(SAP) if for every monic real polynomial p(x) of degree n, there exists a real matrix B whose entries agree in sign with A such that the characteristic polynomial of B is p(x). An n x n pattern A is an inertialy arbitrary pattern(IAP) if (r,s,t) belongs to the inertia set of A for every nonnegative triple (r,s,t) with r+s+t=n. Some elementary results on these two classes of patterns are first exhibited. Tree sign patterns are …
Analyzing The Behavior Of Rats By Repeated Measurements, Kenita A. Hall
Analyzing The Behavior Of Rats By Repeated Measurements, Kenita A. Hall
Mathematics Theses
Longitudinal data, which is also known as repeated measures, has grown increasingly within the past years because of its ability to monitor change both within and between subjects. Statisticians in many fields of study have chosen this way of collecting data because it is cost effective and it minimizes the number of subjects required to produce a meaningful outcome. This thesis will explore the world of longitudinal studies to gain a thorough understanding of why this type of collecting data has grown so rapidly. This study will also describe several methods to analyze repeated measures using data collected on the …

Sas Macro For Hierarchical Dependence In Meta Analysis, Matthew Wayne Maw
Sas Macro For Hierarchical Dependence In Meta Analysis, Matthew Wayne Maw
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This project implemented a simple and useful SAS (Statistical Analysis Software) macro for meta-analysis. The macro was specifically designed for hierarchically dependent meta-analysis but may also be used for independent meta-analysis. Two data files are necessary for this macro. One data file contains the study names, control and treatment group sizes with corresponding means and standard errors, covariates to be tested, an indicator variable noting hierarchically dependent study groups, and a variable providing the degrees of freedom for interdependent studies. The second file contains a variance/covariance matrix for the studies. The macro returns useful information such as study estimates and …
