Accounting For The Environmental Impacts Associated With Residual Products In A Comparative Life Cycle Assessment Of Systems With Multiple Products, Yasuhiro Fukushima, Satoshi Ohara Dec 2018

Accounting For The Environmental Impacts Associated With Residual Products In A Comparative Life Cycle Assessment Of Systems With Multiple Products, Yasuhiro Fukushima, Satoshi Ohara

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

In many production systems, multiple products are interactively produced. Therefore, an innovative technology that leads to changes in parts of such systems may influence both the unit environmental impacts associated with the products, and the productivity of multiple products. To compare alternative technologies on a common basis, we often account for the avoided or supplemented emissions associated with the residual (i.e. surplus and supplemented) products produced from within the considered system boundary. In this study, using an example of an innovative technology envisioned for use in sugar mills, we first demonstrate how comparisons can be made when the systems vary …

The Impact Of The Implementation Of Temporary Import Procedure On Electronic Products: Input--Output Analysis, Dedi Abdul Hadi, Toru Matsumoto Dec 2018

The Impact Of The Implementation Of Temporary Import Procedure On Electronic Products: Input--Output Analysis, Dedi Abdul Hadi, Toru Matsumoto

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Currently, imported electronic products enter the Indonesian market using general import procedures, where the importer has to pay the import duty and taxes in full rate. In the absence of proper recycling systems, the electronic products that have reached their end of life and those are no longer used, end up in the landfills. Some researchers found hazardous materials inside the electronic products that could contaminate water, soil and air. Therefore, another strategy is needed to avoid negative effects on the environment. The Temporary import policy is one of the import procedures under Customs administration control, which states that goods …

Waste Reduction Through Integrated Waste Management Modeling At Mustika Residence (Tangerang), Hendro Putra Johannes Dec 2018

Waste Reduction Through Integrated Waste Management Modeling At Mustika Residence (Tangerang), Hendro Putra Johannes

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

In Indonesia, there are classic issues about waste that are highlighted due to the country’s critical conditions. Uncontrolled population growth and regional development have led to massive waste production. One popular practice in waste management is located at integrated waste management site (TPST). This practice has been implemented successfully by TPST Mustika Iklhas, a small community operation in Tangerang. Though different from previous operations, its success is achieved by active community participation, far away from government intervention. This study looks at management practices in TPST Mustika Ikhlas. The method used to address real and complex problems is called system dynamics. …

The Welfare Of Elderly People In Rural West Java: Economy, Health And Vernacular Care, Kosuke Mizuno, Ekawati Sri Wahyuni, Taizo Wada, Kozo Matsubayashi

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

The universal health social security program in Indonesia began in 2014, and as of the present day, many people are now covered by it. However, many weaknesses in the system have been pointed out. Significantly, many people do not possess the necessary health cards to take advantage of the program due to the complicated process one must go through in order to obtain them. Even now, 60 million people have not joined the program. Many people do not rely solely on the universal social security program but may be supported primarily or additionally by the vernacular care system, whereby support …

When Lca Applies To Health Service Industry, Rr. Anggun Paramita Djati, Sherafina Reni Cahayanti, Ellyna Chairani, Raldi H. Koestoer, Djoko M. Hartono

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

The health service industry involves activities that provide medical services (hospital), manufacture of medical equipment or drugs, and medical insurance services. Options of research methods to measure the impact of services on environmental aspects are available. One among which is life cycle analysis (LCA), the recently popular practice in Indonesia. This paper attempts to explore whether LCA could be fitted to the health service industry. A literature review would help in procuring related references from various publications accompanied by several research results and related studies. For describing the application of LCA in hospitals, several articles were collected, which were later …

Keynote: Motivating Private Climate Governance: The Role Of The Efficiency Gap, Michael P. Vandenbergh Dec 2018

Keynote: Motivating Private Climate Governance: The Role Of The Efficiency Gap, Michael P. Vandenbergh

Arkansas Law Review

The topic of this symposium, “Environmental Sustainability and Private Governance,” is important and timely. In response to the shrinking federal role in environmental protection, many policy advocates have focused on the role of states and cities, but this symposium focuses on another important source of sustainability initiatives: the private sector, including corporations, households, civic and cultural organizations, religious organizations, private hospitals, colleges and universities, and other organizations. States, cities, and other subnational government responses are increasingly important, but the limited geographic reach of subnational governments constrains their ability to address many environmental problems. For instance, although twenty states have set …

Using Renewable Portfolio Standards To Accelerate Development Of Negative Emissions Technologies, Anthony E. Chavez Oct 2018

Using Renewable Portfolio Standards To Accelerate Development Of Negative Emissions Technologies, Anthony E. Chavez

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

As society continues to emit greenhouse gases, the likelihood of dangerous climate change occurring increases. Indeed, most analyses project that we must utilize negative emission technologies (“NETs”) to avoid dangerous warming. Even the Paris Agreement anticipates the implementation of such carbon dioxide (“CO2”) removal technologies. Unfortunately, NETs are not ready for large-scale deployment. In many instances, their technologies remain uncertain; in others, their ability to operate at the scale required is unknown. Other uncertainties, including their costs, effectiveness, and environmental impacts have yet to be determined.

A means to accelerate the development and implementation of NETs is a …

When The Well Runs Dry: Why Water-Rich States Need To Prepare For Climate Change And Protect Their Groundwater, Danielle Takacs Oct 2018

When The Well Runs Dry: Why Water-Rich States Need To Prepare For Climate Change And Protect Their Groundwater, Danielle Takacs

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

It may seem surprising to see such concern over groundwater usage in a state like Wisconsin. While known for its dairy and cheese production, Wisconsin is first in the nation for producing snap beans and cranberries. Agriculture contributes $88.3 billion annually to Wisconsin’s economy alone. In addition to bordering two of the Great Lakes, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, Wisconsin boasts that it is home to about 15,000 lakes. And this does not include the numerous rivers and streams throughout the state. These facts alone may make Wisconsin seem an unlikely place for disputes over groundwater, as water seems to …

Sea Squad, Liam Geary Baulch Sep 2018

Sea Squad, Liam Geary Baulch

The Goose

The Sea Squad is a band of cheerleaders against climate change. Taking action as a team in formation, they gather momentum, inviting all people to cheer with them, mimicking the infinitely expandable nature of the seas' molecular structure. The work was developed and performed as a bilingual project at Est-Nord-Est in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec, Canada, and has since been performed and exhibited internationally. The following poems are some of the chants that Sea Squad use to get a crowd cheering together against climate change.

After the design of hydro-meteorological stations and software for the collection, management and distribution of data, the study involves the installation of 30 stations in the Deduroya Oya river basin in Sri Lanka. The system will be analysed to fully understand the real cost of ownership, data quality and applicability in real situations. If properly validated, these systems can provide an alternative solution, effective and sustainable for the protection of property …

The Role Of The Local Community On Federal Lands: The Weaverville Community Forest, Erin C. Kelly May 2018

The Role Of The Local Community On Federal Lands: The Weaverville Community Forest, Erin C. Kelly

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

In the wake of the timber wars, communities across the American West have struggled to redefine their relationships to nearby federal forests. The timber-dependent model of the pre-Timber War era, with clear timber targets and economic outputs, has been replaced by more nuanced and less clearly-defined model: ecosystem management. This case study research uses interviews with participants in the Weaverville Community Forest (WCF) to explore the role of a community in managing its nearby federal lands. Momentum for the WCF flowed from a small group of citizens who were invested in the forest despite their cultural and ideological differences regarding …

Beyond 'Owls Versus Jobs': A Twenty-Year Retrospective Of The Headwaters Forest Controversy, Jennifer Bernstein May 2018

Beyond 'Owls Versus Jobs': A Twenty-Year Retrospective Of The Headwaters Forest Controversy, Jennifer Bernstein

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

In 1999, the Headwaters Forest Reserve was established in Humboldt County after more than 20 years of community activism, negotiations, and litigation. The ‘last stand’ of unprotected, privately-owned old growth redwood had finally been safeguarded, though many on the North Coast felt that the final deal fell far short of what was needed to protect the watershed’s ecological functioning. This article uses academic and journalistic research, supplemented by oral histories, to make three main points about the North Coast ‘post deal.’ One, forest management practices in the region have evolved to be more consistent with the practices of ecological forestry. …

An Opportunity To End The Timber Wars: How Collaboration In Southeast Alaska Has Helped To Dissipate Conflict, Diana K. Portner May 2018

An Opportunity To End The Timber Wars: How Collaboration In Southeast Alaska Has Helped To Dissipate Conflict, Diana K. Portner

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

Forest management in the Tongass National Forest has been a topic of controversy for decades, due to the result of intense timber extraction in the mid-twentieth century. In recent years, collaborative approaches to management, beginning with a federally chartered advisory committee, have offered opportunities to overcome the seemingly intractable conflict. While a new culture of collaboration is emerging in Southeast Alaska, the region still faces challenges associated with the implementation of these approaches. This commentary explores the history of the conflict, factors that contributed to the success of collaborative approaches to land management in the region, and continued challenges that …

Life Cycle Assessment Of Four Different Sweaters, Sarah Nolimal May 2018

Life Cycle Assessment Of Four Different Sweaters, Sarah Nolimal

DePaul Discoveries

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a methodological tool to describe the impacts of a product over its lifetime, from ‘cradle to grave.’ Despite increased employment of LCA, textile LCA studies are often private, outdated, not transparent, or lack accurate data. Further, we know of no LCA study specific to sweaters. This screening LCA combines published literature and data from OpenLCA databases (Ecoinvent 3.3 and GaBi Professional) to conduct a comparative LCA for four sweaters. To determine the composition of these sweaters, we massed and assessed the material composition of 117 sweaters in October 2015. Based on results, our study compares …

An Adapted Framework For Environmental Sustainability Reporting Using Mobile Technologies, Andre P. Calitz, Jaco F. Zietsman May 2018

An Adapted Framework For Environmental Sustainability Reporting Using Mobile Technologies, Andre P. Calitz, Jaco F. Zietsman

The African Journal of Information Systems

Corporate governance is the process by which organisations are directed and controlled. King IV is regarded as the cornerstone of corporate governance for businesses and emphasises the importance of sustainability reporting in South Africa. Sustainability reporting guidelines inform organisations how to disclose their most critical affects on the environment, society and the economy. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 sustainability reporting framework recommends the Standard Disclosures that all organisations should use to report their sustainability impacts and performance. Sustainability reporting frameworks proposed for the Higher Education sector require reporting principles specific to the needs of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The …

Place-Based Pedagogy And The Creative Writing Classroom, Jennifer Case Mar 2018

Place-Based Pedagogy And The Creative Writing Classroom, Jennifer Case

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

Although compositionists have long appropriated and discussed place-based pedagogy’s ability to encourage environmental awareness and engage community issues, creative writing as a discipline has largely ignored place-based philosophies and environmental education. In fact, creative writing pedagogy often undermines place-based pedagogy by encouraging students to “write what they know” while simultaneously encouraging work with national rather than regional appeal. This article takes the first major step toward addressing this oversight by exploring the field’s assumptions about “place,” how these assumptions are influencing our classrooms, and how place-based composition and pedagogy could—and should—challenge and expand the ways we teach creative writing.
