After creating the weapons that can destroy the world, the next challenge of man is not to win an enemy but to survive the disasters. The modern man realizes that the worst challenges to face are the manmade disasters. While the nature has given us a well-disposed atmosphere to grow we are spoiling the natural resources through various anti-environmental activities. Our partial knowledge on development has taken us through a so-called development, which is neither eco-friendly nor sustainable. It is therefore important to control our own activities and behavior to minimize their negative effects on other adjacent systems and environment. …

Aims: To determine the level of concentration of oxides (chemicals) and heavy metals in 6 soil samples. To further compare the results with acceptable soil quality standards to ascertain the status of soil quality within the study area. Study Design: Collection and analyses of soil samples from the vicinity of Dangote Cement factory, Yandev. Place and Duration of Study: A total of 6 soil samples were collected: using a 2-kilometer interval, five samples were collected within the study area starting from the center of the Cement factory while the sixth soil sample was collected from a Control Community (Tarhembe) located …

Multi-Temporal Change Detection At A Limestone Mining And Cement Production Facility In Central Nigeria, Fanan Ujoh Ph.D, Muhammad Mamman Alhassan Ph.D, Frederick Terkuma Ujoh Mr
Dr. Fanan Ujoh
Limestone mining and cement production at Yandev, Nigeria commenced in 1980 without an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to ascertain the extent of impact these activities could bring to bear on the physical and living conditions of the host environment. This study was carried out to assess the impact that mining of limestone and production of cement has inflicted on the quality and density of vegetation within the study area about 32 years since production commenced. Multi-temporal satellite imageries of the study area (Landsat for 1976, 1986, 1996 and Nigeriasat-1 for 2006), ILWIS Academia 3.3 and SPSS Version 15 were used …

Recovery of cellulose fibres from paper mill effluent has been studied using common polysaccharides or biopolymers such as Guar gum, Xanthan gum and Locust bean gum as flocculent. Guar gum is commonly used in sizing paper and routinely used in paper making. The results have been compared with the performance of alum, which is a common coagulant and a key ingredient of the paper industry. Guar gum recovered about 3.86 mg/L of fibre and was most effective among the biopolymers. Settling velocity distribution curves demonstrated that Guar gum was able to settle the fibres faster than the other biopolymers; however, …

Arsenic Removal From Soil With High Iron Content Using A Natural Surfactant And Phosphate, Soumyadeep Mukhopadhyay Dr, Mohd Ali Hashim Dr, Matthew Allen Mr, Bhaskar Sen Gupta Dr
Soumyadeep Mukhopadhyay Dr
An environment friendly arsenic removal technique from contaminated soil with high iron content has been studied. A natural surfactant extracted from soapnut fruit, phosphate solution and their mixture was used separately as extractants. The mixture was most effective in desorbing arsenic, attaining above 70 % efficiency in the pH range of 4–5. Desorption kinetics followed Elovich model. Micellar solubilization by soapnut and arsenic exchange mechanism by phosphate are the probable mechanisms behind arsenic desorption. Sequential extraction reveals that the mixed soapnut–phosphate system is effective in desorbing arsenic associated with amphoteric–Fe-oxide forms. No chemical change to the wash solutions was observed …

Estimating Plume Emission Rate And Dispersion Pattern From A Cement Plant At Yandev, Central Nigeria, Fanan Ujoh Ph.D, Olarewaju Oluseyi Ifatimehin Ph.D, Isa Dlama Kwabe Mr
Dr. Fanan Ujoh
Cement production at Yandev, Nigeria commenced in 1980 without an environmental impact assessment to ascertain the extent of damage production activities would bring to bear on the physical conditions of the host environment. This study was carried out to provide baseline data on the rate and pattern of plume rise from the factory. Field survey was employed for primary data collation, while secondary data (climatic and factory data) were acquired from NIMET Makurdi Office and Dangote Cement Plc. Plume rate was estimated using the Gaussian (Mathematical) Model; Kriging, using Arc GIS, was adopted for modelling the pattern of plume dispersion. …
Cities, Disaster Risk And Adaptation, Christine Wamsler
Cities, Disaster Risk And Adaptation, Christine Wamsler
Christine Wamsler
Worldwide, disasters and climate change pose a serious risk to sustainable urban development, resulting in escalating human and economic costs. Consequently, city authorities and other urban actors face the challenge of integrating risk reduction and adaptation strategies into their work, although related knowledge and expertise are still scarce.
Cities, Disaster Risk and Adaptation explores ways in which resilient cities can be ‘built’ and sustainable urban transformations achieved. The book provides a comprehensive understanding of urban risk reduction and adaptation planning, exploring key theoretical concepts and analyzing the complex interrelation between cities, disasters and climate change. It further provides an overview …
