Plastic Recycling Is Inefficient And Expensive, Clark S. Adomaitis
Plastic Recycling Is Inefficient And Expensive, Clark S. Adomaitis
Capstones
Plastics production and incineration contributes more than 850 million metric tons to the emissions that are causing climate change. Emissions are growing at a moment when scientists and world leaders are in agreement that they need to dramatically decrease. Environmentalists say that plastic production makes up 4.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. New plastic plants opening in the U.S. do not line up with emission reduction goals.
At the end of plastics’ lives, a lot of what we’re putting into our recycling bins isn’t getting recycled. In fact, only 18% of trash from New York City homes is actually recycled. …

Thin Safety Margin: The Sefor Super-Prompt-Critical Transient Experiments, Ozark Mountains, Arkansas 1970–1971, Jerry Havens, Collis Geren
Arkansas Scholarly Editions
Thin Safety Margin charts the history of SEFOR, a twenty-megawatt reactor that operated for three years in the rural Ozark Mountains of Arkansas as part of an internationally sponsored program designed to demonstrate the Doppler effect in plutonium-oxide-fueled fast reactors. Authors Jerry Havens and Collis Geren draw upon this history to assess the accidental explosion risk inherent in using fast reactors to reduce the energy industry’s carbon dioxide emissions.
If a sufficiently powerful fast-neutron explosion were to cause the containment of a reactor such as SEFOR’s to fail, the reactor’s radiotoxic plutonium fuel could vaporize and escape into the surrounding …

Impacts Of Oil And Gas Wastes On Landfill Leachate, Sewage Treatment Plants, And The Environment, Lauren Badertscher
Impacts Of Oil And Gas Wastes On Landfill Leachate, Sewage Treatment Plants, And The Environment, Lauren Badertscher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Between January 2011 and March 2021 oil and gas wells in Pennsylvania produced
305,637,795 barrels of liquid waste and 6,992,957 tons of solid waste with the majority from
Marcellus Shale unconventional wells. This waste is not considered hazardous and over 89% of
the solid waste generated by unconventional and conventional oil and gas extraction has been
disposed of in landfills over the past decade. This study examined trends in the quantity of waste
produced and methods of disposal. Landfills accepting this waste were identified and their
general method of leachate treatment, using onsite facilities or offsite at wastewater treatment
plants, …
Analysis Of Mexico City Transportation Systems To Address Climate Change, Traffic, Social Equity, Safety, And Air Pollution Health Risks, Rene Franco
Master's Projects and Capstones
This research presents an analysis of Mexico City's transportation systems and how they impact climate change, traffic, social equity, safety, and health risks. The purpose of this research is to propose transportation and energy management strategies to the government of Mexico City to reduce the effects of climate change, traffic, social equity, safety, and health risks. The methodology used in the research includes a traffic analysis, environmental and social impact analysis across Mexico City transportation, an equity analysis, and a SWOT analysis of policies. Through the traffic analysis of the research found that traffic congestion occurs in the northwest region …
Scan Of The Advantage Of Using Biofuels, Ethanol, Ana Carla Bueno
Scan Of The Advantage Of Using Biofuels, Ethanol, Ana Carla Bueno
Symposium of Student Scholars
The environment is the big sink where all the human waste produced is deposited, mainly the pollutant gases from cars. It is inevitable not to contaminate drinking water, air, and all other ecosystems on the planet, and it was from these concerns that scientists began to develop alternative ways to mitigate the side effects of pollution. Currently, there are many strategies to soften the emission of pollutant gases into the atmosphere, and the biggest competitor of traditional fossil fuel is biofuels. The big challenge in the production of this type of fuel is the competition with the conventional fossil fuel, …
Investigative Study Of Microalgal And Electrochemical Wastewater Treatment Systems And Modeling Of The Wafer-Enhanced Electrodeionization Using Supervised Learning, Humeyra Betul Ulusoy Erol
Investigative Study Of Microalgal And Electrochemical Wastewater Treatment Systems And Modeling Of The Wafer-Enhanced Electrodeionization Using Supervised Learning, Humeyra Betul Ulusoy Erol
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Wastewater has a serious impact on environment and public health due to its high concentration of nutrients and toxic contaminants. Without proper treatment, excess nutrients discharged in wastewater can cause a damage to the ecosystem such as undesirable pH shifts, cyanotoxin production, and low dissolved oxygen concentrations.
Main objectives of this dissertation work were to investigate i) the biofuel potential of P. cruentum when grown in swine wastewater, ii) the influence of four most commonly used ion exchange resins on the system efficiency and selectivity for the removal of sodium, calcium, and magnesium ions, and iii) the modeling of wafer-enhanced …
Pakistan's Ordeal Against Climate Change: The Main Contributors And The Way Forward, Fasih Zulfiqar
Pakistan's Ordeal Against Climate Change: The Main Contributors And The Way Forward, Fasih Zulfiqar
CBER Conference
This poster takes a detour through the challenges facing Pakistan in tackling climate change and progress hitherto. It analyzes the main culprits of air pollution in Pakistan and where Pakistan stands relative to other developing nations. The poster concludes on a hopeful note, given the recent government initiatives.

Policy Analysis Of Emissions Cap And Trade: The United State And The European Union, Drew Bealby
Policy Analysis Of Emissions Cap And Trade: The United State And The European Union, Drew Bealby
Master's Theses
Effects of climate change are appearing each day therefore proactive steps need to be made to reduce these effects. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) notes that humans producing greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane, and nitrous oxide are the main reason the Earth’s overall temperature is rising (NASA 2019). A policy analysis was done on the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) along with comparisons to the United States’ emissions policies that are in place currently. The European Union (E.U.) itself is both an economic and political union of 27 countries in …
