Spatial Analysis Of Dumpsites Volumes From Rural Territory Case Study: Neamt County, Romania, Florin C. Mihai, Andreea Lămășanu
Spatial Analysis Of Dumpsites Volumes From Rural Territory Case Study: Neamt County, Romania, Florin C. Mihai, Andreea Lămășanu

Open dumps was the main option of the local communities in household waste management, this practice being banned after July 16, 2009. The paper examines the correlation between dumpsites volumes, population density and local geographical conditions in the context that in most rural administrative-territorial units of the county there were no facilities for waste collection. The geographical distribution of dumpsites volumes reflects the disparities between different areas of the county and on the other hand, it highlights the spaces exposed to pollution. Also, the comparative analysis between 2004 (pre-accession) and 2009 (post-accession) reflects a rudimentary waste management system in this …
Tourism Implications On Local Waste Management. Case Study: Neamț County, Florin C. Mihai
Tourism Implications On Local Waste Management. Case Study: Neamț County, Florin C. Mihai
Florin C MIHAI
The paper examines tourism as potential source of waste generation in urban and rural areas of Neamt county. An assessment method is proposed and the final result is mapping the process at local scale. In order to analyze the tourism impact on local waste management system, the waste generated by tourists (estimated values) is related to local household waste generation. This paper outlines the disparities within cities and communes and it also analyses the bad practices of tourists supported by field observations
Performance Assessment Method Of Urban Waste Management Systems From Neamț County, Romania, Florin C. Mihai
Performance Assessment Method Of Urban Waste Management Systems From Neamț County, Romania, Florin C. Mihai
Florin C MIHAI
This paper proposes a performance assessment method (PAM) at urban scale, based on five specific waste indicators such as: population access to waste collection services (%), separate collection (%), reuse & recycle (%), landfilling (%) and amounts of waste uncollected (Qwu-%). Values of each indicator are correlated to an assessment table for three different years (2004, 2007, 2010) highlighting the disparities between urban localities of Neamt county. The paper also examines the changes and dysfunctions of urban waste management systems between preaccession vs post-accession period. PAM should be a necessary tool for environmental authorities or decision-makers for monitoring process of …

Landfills As Anthropogenic Landforms In Urban Environment From Neamţ County., Florin C. Mihai, Liviu Apostol, Adrian Ursu, Pavel Ichim

Landfills are the most common and easiest methods to dispose the municipal waste in Romania and still prevails in current waste management options. This type of critical infrastructure was designed to dispose urban waste generated over years or even decades and ultimately led to create new landforms in urban landscape. On the other hand, these sites are major sources of complex pollution unfulfilling EU regulations, being scheduled to be closed. This paper aims to analyze landfills as anthropogenic landforms by applying GIS techniques emphasizing them in a geographical context and not only in situ. The location of these sites usually …
Population Access To Waste Collection Services: Urban Vs Rural Areas In Romania,, Florin C. Mihai
Population Access To Waste Collection Services: Urban Vs Rural Areas In Romania,, Florin C. Mihai
Florin C MIHAI
This paper aims a comparative analysis at county level concerning urban and rural population access to sanitation services in the context of EU accession. Partially coverage of population to such services contributes to illegal dumping of waste generated and uncollected.Furthermore, waste management facilities are inappropriate, particularly in small cities or rural areas. Comparative analysis of urban vs. rural population served by waste collection services using thematic cartography highlights on the one hand the existing disparities within a county and on the other hand reflects the regional disparities across Romania. The demographic, socioeconomic and geographic differentiations between urban and rural areas amplify …
Improper Household Waste Disposal In Rural Territory.Case Study: Neamt County, Florin C. Mihai
Improper Household Waste Disposal In Rural Territory.Case Study: Neamt County, Florin C. Mihai
Florin C MIHAI
Open dumping of waste generated and uncollected is the most common option in waste management schemes from rural areas. Lack of sanitation services or rudimentary waste management systems favored this practice. This paper proposes a method to estimate the amounts of household waste uncontrolled disposed at local administrative unit level (commune) for 2003 and 2010. Based on estimating the amounts of waste generated and uncollected are introduced new indicators in the quantitative analysis taking into account the household waste composition, individual composting of biodegradable waste or recyclable waste from households for a more proper assessment of waste disposed. Usually household …
Geography Of Waste As A New Approach In Waste Management Study,, Florin C. Mihai
Geography Of Waste As A New Approach In Waste Management Study,, Florin C. Mihai
Florin C MIHAI
Municipal waste management in the last two decades has become a global environmental priority in the context of increasing amounts of waste generated due to the development of a mass consumer society. Various issues of waste management , territorial and temporal variability, spatial analysis of treatment or disposal facilities, systemic implications on the environment, the harmonization of international policy at national, regional and local level are solid arguments for studying this field by geography. Mostly technical or economic studies, lacking a vision of territory are supplemented in the conceptual and methodological level by geographers. This paper performed on the one …
The Usage Of Natural Fertilizers - A Practice That Favors The Ecological Agriculture Development In Romania, Andreea Ghiurcă, Andreea Lămășanu, Florin C. Mihai
The Usage Of Natural Fertilizers - A Practice That Favors The Ecological Agriculture Development In Romania, Andreea Ghiurcă, Andreea Lămășanu, Florin C. Mihai
Florin C MIHAI
Natural fertilizers were used in agriculture since ancient times and are still the best method of soil fertilization. Traditional agriculture, practiced in rural areas of Romania, contributes to the maintenance of soils fertilization ecological practices. Our research shows the evolution of the quantity of natural fertilizers used in the past 20 years at the national level and at the level of NeamŃ County captures the evolution over the seven years of natural fertilizers areas. In the analyzed period, the quantity of natural fertilizers on agricultural land is growing, but fertilized land record low values, showing that it has increased the …
Development Of Waste Collection Services On Rural Territory From Neamț County, Florin C. Mihai, Liviu Apostol
Development Of Waste Collection Services On Rural Territory From Neamț County, Florin C. Mihai, Liviu Apostol

This paper analyzes the expansion of sanitation services in rural areas after the closure and rehabilitation of rural dumpistes having as deadline July 16, 2009. Following this period local authorities are forced to collect and dispose the waste generated in urban landfills from proximity until the transfer stations will be operational. Most of the rural population has no access to waste collection services, waste generated and uncollected are uncontrolled disposed polluting the local environment. Development of sanitation services is a basic condition for an efficient implementation of integrated waste management system at county level.
The Process Of Closing Down Rural Landfills Case Study : Neamț County, Liviu Apostol, Florin C. Mihai
The Process Of Closing Down Rural Landfills Case Study : Neamț County, Liviu Apostol, Florin C. Mihai

Landfilling is the main method for municipal waste disposal in Romania. Access to sanitation services are limited on rural territory and that leads to uncontrolled waste disposal with negative implications on the geosystem. Implementation of EU acquis on waste disposal from rural areas requires local authorities to close the landfills by July 16, 2009 . Following this deadline, municipalities are obliged to provide waste collection and transportation to the existing urban landfills. Under these conditions, this article is proposing a territorial review of closing and rehabilitation of rural landfills from Neamt county. Also, this paper analyzed the existing environmental dysfunctions supported …
