Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1987 Annual Summary, James Whitcomb

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made on oyster shells strung on wire and suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells is counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur.

Simple analysis of our data clearly indicate that water quality conditions in north-eastern Tampa Bay has improved during our study. Further, there are no indications that this improvement has yet climaxed.

When the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council created the Agency on Bay Management, it charged the group with preparing an annual status of the condition of Tampa Bay, the state's largest open water estuary. Therefore, pursuant to the adopted rules of the Council's Agency on Bay Management, this document is the first State of Tampa Bay report. This report includes a discussion of the history of the Agency, an evaluation of how well the bay is doing environmentally and recommendations about what needs to be done in the work program aimed at improving Tampa Bay.

Flooding at the Great Slat Lake could become a major disaster through the high cost of coping with the rising level, sudden collapse of protective levees, failure of pumping to the West Desert to induce increased evaporation, or, fiscally, by a rapid drop in the lake level just after a large protective decision making in the private sector, provide for the design of hydrologically safe levees, and optimize pumping schemes for moving water within a partitioned lake. The Division of Water Resources is conducting a study of further water development in the Virgin River Basin. This report examines the effects of groundwater development as a part of the overall study. The study area includes about 1000 square miles in the Central Virgin River Basin east of the Hurricane Fault. The deeply incised Virgin River has cut a youthful drainage network with deep canyons and steep escarpments and drains out of southwest Utah across Arizona to Lake Mead in Nevada. Engineering Treatment Of Hazardous Wastewaters Utilizing Dye-Sensitized Photooxidation, Betty-Ann Naeger, R. Ryan Dupont, William M. Moore

Studies were conducted to determine the applicability of photooxidation for the degradation of selected hazardous and refractory organic compounds. These photochemical oxidation reactions occur through the transfer of energy from electronically excited sensitizer molecules which attain excited states by absorbing visible light energy. Optimum conditions for photooxidation were established based on sensitizer concentration and reaction pH for four polynuclear aromatic pollutants. The rate of photooxidation was found to be independent of the initial substrate concentration for methylene blue-sensitized reactions, and dependent on substrate concentration for solutions without a sensitizing dye. Internal anchor tags with external tubes were used to tag 1,986 striped bass in the James River in the Spring of 1987. The total number tagged was adjusted (at this time) to 823 because of observed and suspected tagging mortality. The available stock of striped bass in the Spring contained both young resident fish and mature nonresident fish which left the area of capture after spawning, presumably to migrate north in coastal waters. The exodus of the mature fish after spawning and the absence of a commercial fishery resulted in only 42 tag returns as of Spring 1988. This proportion …

In Summer, 1986 a field program was conducted in Ware Creek from its mouth at the York River to the dam at Richardson's Millpond. The data collected was combined with flow data from USGS and a tide record from NOAA and was used to calibrate and verify a one-dimensional, real-time, hydrodynamic and salinity intrusion model. The model has been applied to study the effect of the proposed dam and reservoir on the salinity distribution in Ware Creek.

This study was designed as a pilot study with the intent of identifying important considerations for the design and conduct of an investigation of forested buffer strip performance in Virginia's coastal plain. The approach 3 4' I was to conduct a small preliminary study on a single site using the opportunity to investigate a number of potential sampling methods.
