Transmission of avian malaria in the Hawaiian Islands varies across altitudinal gradients and is greatest at elevations below 1500 m where both temperature and moisture are favorable for the sole mosquito vector, Culex quinquefasciatus, and extrinsic sporogonic development of the parasite, Plasmodium relictum. Potential consequences of global warming on this system have been recognized for over a decade with concerns that increases in mean temperatures could lead to expansion of malaria into habitats where cool temperatures currently limit transmission to highly susceptible endemic forest birds. Climate change, understood as a statistically significant variation in the mean state of the climate or its variability, is the greatest environmental challenge of this generation (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2001). Marshfield is already being affected by changes in the climate that will have a profound effect on the town’s economy, public health, coastal resources, natural features, water systems, and public and private infrastructure. A major economic constraint in the Bahamas, and other small carbonates islands world-wide, is the lack of fresh water resources. To better address socio-economic problems on San Salvador Island, the Bahamas, I sought to gain a more detailed understanding of the extent, behavior, and controls on the island’s fresh-water lens using DC electrical resistivity tomography and time-series geochemical data from the Line Hole well field, an inactive source water supply last used in December of 2006. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has selected the Saugatuck, Salmon, Eight Mile, Mount Hope / Natchaug, and Hollenbeck River watersheds for priority protection in Connecticut. A number of threats, including altered hydrology, have been identified in these watersheds. This project has been designed to better understand that threat and provide some context for future protection or restoration of the hydrology within those watersheds. The definition of altered hydrology is problematic, as the time at which the watersheds are considered unaltered is ambiguous and historic data is often unavailable. Wetland degradation and loss is the result of a combination of natural causes and anthropogenic activities and is a serious problem in coastal Louisiana, where approximately 80% of the total US coastal wetland loss since the 1930’s has occurred. One method currently used to address this wetland loss problem is structural marsh management,which is the use of levees and water control structures to control hydroperiod. The effects of structural marsh management on two managed marshes in Southern Louisiana (Unit 4 of the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge and the Fina LaTerre Mitigation Bank) were evaluated by comparing the soils and the dominant …
