Paired Positive Carbonate Carbon Isotope, Organic Carbon Isotope, And Oxygen Isotope Composition Study Across The Lower Mississippian Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion, Southeastern Nevada, Usa, Robert Alan Henry
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
A prominent positive carbonate carbon isotope (delta13Ccarb) excursion of Early Mississippian age (ca 351 Ma) has been documented by previous studies from numerous sites globally. This delta13Ccarb excursion has been interpreted as resulting from enhanced organic carbon burial that removed 13C-depleted carbon from the ocean and atmosphere. Anticipated outcomes from enhanced organic carbon burial would include a similar positive excursion in organic carbon isotopes (delta13Corg) and a global cooling event resulting from reduced CO2 in the atmosphere and ocean. These predictions, however, were not tested sufficiently in previous studies. This research has tested these predictions through an integrated study of …
Structural And Stratigraphic Relationships Near The Southern Terminus Of The Pulaski Fault, Northeast Tennessee, Phillip Michael Derryberry
Structural And Stratigraphic Relationships Near The Southern Terminus Of The Pulaski Fault, Northeast Tennessee, Phillip Michael Derryberry
Masters Theses
The Pulaski fault is one of the master thrust faults in the Appalachian Alleghanian fold-thrust belt. Detailed geologic mapping of Cambrian and Ordovician strata in northeastern Tennessee revealed key structural and stratigraphic characteristics for distinguishing the Pulaski thrust sheet from its footwall, the Saltville thrust sheet. Unlike most thrust systems in the Valley and Ridge, the Pulaski records at least two deformation phases. Geometric and crosscutting relationships along parts of the Pulaski thrust sheet in this study area and in southwestern Virginia suggest hanging wall and possibly some footwall deformation prior to the emplacement of the thrust sheet. The initial …
Late Pleistocene And Holocene Hydroclimate Change In The Southeastern United States: Sedimentary, Pedogenic, And Stable Carbon Isotope Evidence In Tennessee River Floodplain Paleosols, James Joseph Kocis
Masters Theses
In order to understand hydroclimate variability of future climate change, it is important to know the timing and range of natural climate change in the past. The Southeastern United States (SE) is situated along the poleward extent of projected subtropical drying, where the expression of past hydrological balances remains unclear. The lack of high-resolution paleohydroclimate records in the SE forces climate modelers to base interpretations on better-understood regions of North America. The SE likely experienced significant changes in precipitation regimes resulting from its position at the convergence of several oceanic and continental air masses. To reconstruct precipitation variability, this study …

Stratigraphic evidence is found for two coseismic subsidence events that underlie a floodplain 20 km south of Padang, West Sumatra along the Mentawai segment (0.5°S–0.3°S) of the Sunda subduction zone. Each earthquake is marked by a sharp soil‐mud contact that represents a sudden change from mangrove to tidal flat. The earthquakes occurred about 4000 and 3000 cal years B.P. based on radiocarbon ages of detrital plant fragments and seeds. The absence of younger paleoseismic evidence suggests that late Holocene relative sea level fall left the floodplain too high for an earthquake to lower it into the intertidal zone. Our results …
Stratigraphic Analysis And Regional Correlation Of Isolated, Top-Truncated Shallow Marine Sandstone Bodies Within The Upper Cretaceous Frontier Formation, Bighorn And Washakie Counties, Wyoming, Andrew J. Hutsky
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A detailed sedimentologic and stratigraphic analysis facilitated interpretations of depositional environment, sequence stratigraphy, and sandstone body geometry for isolated, top-truncated, shallow marine sandstone bodies of the Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian-Turonian) Frontier Formation, northeast Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. The Frontier Formation interval is ~160 meters thick and was deposited as a complex clastic wedge that prograded into Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway (KWIS). The vertical interval comprises several incomplete coarsening-upward cycles, composed of basal offshore marine and prodeltaic shales progressively overlain by proximal shallow marine/fluvial facies that are capped by pebble lags. Sedimentary structures, vertical stacking patterns, and lateral variability within these cycles record …
Geochemical And Petrographic Analysis Of Gore Mountain Garnets, Adirondacks Ny, Elizabeth R. Morgan
Geochemical And Petrographic Analysis Of Gore Mountain Garnets, Adirondacks Ny, Elizabeth R. Morgan
Honors Theses
The mine at Gore Mountain is famous for its giant garnets and long history of garnet abrasive production. This location, Warrensburg (Wall St.), and others were examined to attempt to better understand the petrogenesis of these remarkable rocks. Our studies have emphasized the geochemistry of bulk rocks and rock and mineral separates (122 analyses), thin section petrology, and thermodynamic modeling of mineral assemblages. At Gore Mtn. the ore has the assemblage hornblende-plagioclase-garnet-OPX-biotite, and formed over a ~2 m thick transition zone from a layered olivine corona gabbro, metamorphosed at granulite facies. Petrographically the delicate corona structures and fine-grained garnets were …
Taxonomic Composition, Paleoecology And Biostratigraphy Of Late Cretaceous Diatoms From Devon Island, Nunavut, Canadian High Arctic, Jakub Witkowski, David M. Harwood, Karen Chin
Taxonomic Composition, Paleoecology And Biostratigraphy Of Late Cretaceous Diatoms From Devon Island, Nunavut, Canadian High Arctic, Jakub Witkowski, David M. Harwood, Karen Chin
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Upper Cretaceous sediments of the Kanguk Formation exposed in Eidsbotn and Viks Fiord grabens on Devon Island, Nunavut, Canadian High Arctic, yielded 91 fossil marine diatom species and varieties (including indeterminate taxa), representing 41 genera. Excellent preservation of the assemblages was aided by shallow burial, protection in downfaulted linear grabens, and the presence of abundant volcanic material. Planktonic species and resting spores comprise nearly 70% of the diatom assemblage, and provided abundant food resources for the Late Cretaceous Arctic ecosystem. Deposition of the approximately 225 m-thick stratigraphic sequence was predominantly in a shallow marine neritic setting, with an upward progression …
Lateral Variability Of Facies And Cycles In The Furongian (Late Cambrian) Carbonate Platform: An Example From The Big Horse Member Of The Orr Formation In Western Utah, U.S.A., Ratna Widiarti
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Carbonate depositional cycles and sequences have been proposed to be formed by glacioeustatic sea-level changes. This mechanism would be questionable during times of high atmospheric CO2 and negligible continental ice sheets such as the supergreenhouse time in the Furongian (late Cambrian), during which limited glacioeustatic sea-level changes would be expected. A detailed sedimentological study of the Furongian Orr Formation in western Utah is aimed at testing the hypothesis that, under supergreenhouse climate conditions, most meter-scale carbonate cycles may have been formed through autocyclic processes and thus they should be laterally variable. The research was conducted in a small area ( …
Trace Element Analysis Of Rutile And Zr-In-Rutile Thermometry For Southern Appalachian Pelitic Schists, Kathryn A. Eccles
Trace Element Analysis Of Rutile And Zr-In-Rutile Thermometry For Southern Appalachian Pelitic Schists, Kathryn A. Eccles
Honors Program Projects
Over the past decade, geochronology studies in the southern Appalachians have focused on zircon, monazite, and mica ages to confirm the occurrence of a major Taconic event (~460‐450 Ma) affecting the Western and Central Blue Ridge, followed by a younger NeoAcadian (~360‐345 Ma) event affecting the Eastern Blue Ridge and Piedmont. Peak conditions of granulite facies metamorphism are estimated at ~850°C (garnet‐biotite) and 7‐9 kbar (GASP) for sillimanite schists at Winding Stair Gap (WSG), but thermobarometric studies of metasedimentary rocks in the region are limited and consequently Pressure‐Temperature‐time‐Deformation (P‐T‐t‐D) paths are poorly understood. Many details of the orogenic processes in …

Conservation and Survey Division
Acidic weathering of the sulfidic Upper Cretaceous Carlile and Pierre Shales in Nebraska has led to the precipitation of the Al sulfate–hydroxide minerals aluminite, alunite, “basaluminite”/felsöbányaite (e.g.,), the aluminum hydroxides gibbsite and bayerite, and the rare Al phosphate hydroxide vashegyite. Kaolinite has also been produced as a result of this acidic weathering. These minerals do not appear as neoformed constituents in any extant soils in the region, and their existence underscores the ability of pyrite oxidation to produce major changes in mineralogy on a Holocene to Recent time scale. Jarosite, hydronium jarosite, gypsum, halotrichite, and melanterite also appear as secondary …

This field trip examines contrasting lines of evidence bearing on the timing and structural style of Cenozoic (and perhaps late Mesozoic) extensional deformation in northeastern Nevada. Studies of metamorphic core complexes in this region report extension beginning in the early Cenozoic or even Late Cretaceous, peaking in the Eocene and Oligocene, and being largely over before the onset of “modern” Basin and Range extension in the middle Miocene. In contrast, studies based on low- temperature thermochronology and geologic mapping of Eocene and Miocene volcanic and sedimentary deposits report only minor, localized extension in the Eocene, no extension at all in …
Geochemistry, Geothermobarometry And Geochronology Of High-Pressure Granulites And Implications For The Exhumation History Of Ultrahigh-Pressure Terranes: Dulan, Western China, Benjamin David Joseph Christensen
Geochemistry, Geothermobarometry And Geochronology Of High-Pressure Granulites And Implications For The Exhumation History Of Ultrahigh-Pressure Terranes: Dulan, Western China, Benjamin David Joseph Christensen
All Master's Theses
The Dulan ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) rocks of the North Qaidam terrane, Western China, represent continental crust that has been subducted ~100 km during continental collision. Adjacent granulites representing burial to ~50 km could either be overprinted eclogites or a separate high-pressure-high-temperature (HP-HT) granulite unit. Overprinted eclogites and HP-HT granulites imply different P-T-t paths for UHP rocks. Metamorphic conditions for the granulites are 750–880 °C and 14–17 kbar. Zircon U-Pb geochronology, REE patterns and Ti-in-zircon thermometry indicate an increase in temperature from ~800 °C (449 Ma) to ~900 °C (418 Ma). This temperature increase could explain the presence of granulite leucosomes and …
Relationships Between Snake River Paleofloods, Occupational Patterns And Archaeological Preservation At Redbird Beach Archaeological Site In Lower Hells Canyon, Idaho, Tabitha Trosper
All Master's Theses
The Snake River basin drains 282,000 km2 of the northwestern U.S. and is the largest tributary to the Columbia River. Redbird Beach, an archaeological site located in the lower Hells Canyon reach of the Snake River, contains extensive vertical exposures of archaeological materials interbedded with Snake River flood sediments. Redbird Beach formed in the lee of the Redbird Creek debris fan, is composed of interfingering deposits from large floods on the Snake River and locally-derived alluvial sediments from Redbird Creek. Through stratigraphic analyses of slackwater deposits, this study compares the temporal and spatial patterns of human occupation at Redbird …
