Using Materialized Views For Answering Graph Pattern Queries, Michael Lan Dec 2022

Using Materialized Views For Answering Graph Pattern Queries, Michael Lan

Dissertations

Discovering patterns in graphs by evaluating graph pattern queries involving direct (edge-to-edge mapping) and reachability (edge-to-path mapping) relationships under homomorphisms on data graphs has been extensively studied. Previous studies have aimed to reduce the evaluation time of graph pattern queries due to the potentially numerous matches on large data graphs.

In this work, the concept of the summary graph is developed to improve the evaluation of tree pattern queries and graph pattern queries. The summary graph first filters out candidate matches which violate certain reachability constraints, and then finds local matches of query edges. This reduces redundancy in the representation …

Muse: A Genetic Algorithm For Musical Chord Progression Generation, Griffin Going Dec 2022

Muse: A Genetic Algorithm For Musical Chord Progression Generation, Griffin Going

Culminating Experience Projects

Foundational to our understanding and enjoyment of music is the intersection of harmony and movement. This intersection manifests as chord progressions which themselves underscore the rhythm and melody of a piece. In musical compositions, these progressions often follow a set of rules and patterns which are themselves frequently broken for the sake of novelty. In this work, we developed a genetic algorithm which learns these rules and patterns (and how to break them) from a dataset of 890 songs from various periods of the Billboard Top 100 rankings. The algorithm learned to generate increasingly valid, yet interesting chord progressions via …

Neural Approaches For Language-Agnostic Search And Recommendation, Hamed Rezanejad Asl Bonab Oct 2022

Neural Approaches For Language-Agnostic Search And Recommendation, Hamed Rezanejad Asl Bonab

Doctoral Dissertations

There are significant efforts toward developing better neural approaches for information retrieval problems. However, the vast majority of these studies are conducted using English-only data. In fact, trends and statistics of non-English content and users on the Internet show exponential growth and that novel information retrieval systems need to be language-agnostic; they need to bridge the language barrier between users and content, leverage data from high-resource settings for lower-resourced settings, and be able to extend to new languages and local markets easily. To this end, we focus on search and recommendation as two vital components of information systems. We explore …

Robustness And Cross-Lingual Transfer: An Exploration Of Out-Of-Distribution Scenario In Natural Language Processing, Yu, Sicheng Sep 2022

Robustness And Cross-Lingual Transfer: An Exploration Of Out-Of-Distribution Scenario In Natural Language Processing, Yu, Sicheng

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Most traditional machine learning or deep learning methods are based on the premise that training data and test data are independent and identical distributed, i.e., IID. However, it is just an ideal situation. In real-world applications, test set and training data often follow different distributions, which we refer to as the out of distribution, i.e., OOD, setting. As a result, models trained with traditional methods always suffer from an undesirable performance drop on the OOD test set. It's necessary to develop techniques to solve this problem for real applications. In this dissertation, we present four pieces of work in the …
