Artificial General Intelligence And The Mind-Body Problem: Exploring The Computability Of Simulated Human Intelligence In Light Of The Immaterial Mind, Caleb Parks
Senior Honors Theses
In this thesis I explore whether achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI) through simulating the human brain is theoretically possible. Because of the scientific community’s predominantly physicalist outlook on the mind-body problem, AGI research may be limited by erroneous foundational presuppositions. Arguments from linguistics and mathematics demonstrate that the human intellect is partially immaterial, opening the door for novel analysis of the mind’s simulability. I categorize mind-body problem philosophies in a manner relevant to computer science based upon state transitions, and determine their ramifications on mind-simulation. Finally, I demonstrate how classical architectures cannot resolve so-called Gödel statements, discuss why this inability …

Artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on society have received a great deal of attention in the past five years since the first Stanford AI100 report. AI already globally impacts individuals in critical and personal ways, and many industries will continue to experience disruptions as the full algorithmic effects are understood. However, with regard to education, adopting in disciplines remains limited largely to Computer Science and Information Technology in postsecondary education. Recent advances with technology are especially promising for their potential to create and scale personalized learning for students, to optimize strategies for learning outcomes, and to increase access to …

Machine Learning Prediction Of Hea Properties, Nicholas J. Beaver, Nathaniel Melisso, Travis Murphy
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
High-entropy alloys (HEA) are a very new development in the field of metallurgical materials. They are made up of multiple principle atoms unlike traditional alloys, which contributes to their high configurational entropy. The microstructure and properties of HEAs are are not well predicted with the models developed for more common engineering alloys, and there is not enough data available on HEAs to fully represent the complex behavior of these alloys. To that end, we explore how the use of machine learning models can be used to model the complex, high dimensional behavior in the HEA composition space. Based on our …

Building on the work done initially as a SURP 2021 project and continued through 2021-23, the focus for this summer project will be on the use of computer technology for locating a missing person. Over the last year, we developed the digital equivalents of about 30 paper-based S&R forms and the infrastructure to collect the respective information. In their current use, these paper forms are filled out by search teams, collected in a command post, and reviewed by search coordinators. This process is time-consuming, prone to errors and loss of information, and relies heavily on the experience, skills, and mental …

Ethics And Social Justice For Ai In Data Science, Arya Ramchander, Kylene Nicole Landenberger
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
The advances of AI raise several critical questions about human values and ethics, highlighting the need for researchers and developers to consider the ethical implications and the risks of neglecting them. In the past few years, student researchers have developed an AI model that allows users to test their surveys for possible breaches of subject confidentiality. This allows the users to gauge the ethicality of their proposal. This summer, we have expanded on this research and launched an interactive model for students and researches to assess their current work for ethical and social justice implications. Using Langchain and Figma, we …

Agent decision making using Reinforcement Learning (RL) heavily relies on either a model or simulator of the environment (e.g., moving in an 8x8 maze with three rooms, playing Chess on an 8x8 board). Due to this dependence, small changes in the environment (e.g., positions of obstacles in the maze, size of the board) can severely affect the effectiveness of the policy learned by the agent. To that end, existing work has proposed training RL agents on an adaptive curriculum of environments (generated automatically) to improve performance on out-of-distribution (OOD) test scenarios. Specifically, existing research has employed the potential for the …
Automatic Identification Of Jetting Behavior In 3d Printing With Binary Classification And Anomaly Detection, Alexander Chandy
Automatic Identification Of Jetting Behavior In 3d Printing With Binary Classification And Anomaly Detection, Alexander Chandy
Honors Scholar Theses
Consistently jetting different materials from the print head of a 3D printer is a key, yet challenging task in manufacturing processes. By using active machine learning, we can efficiently predict complex diagrams that illustrate the region of printing conditions under which “desirable jetting”, “jetting”, and “no jetting” of ink occurs for different substances. However, labeling the images of printed ink droplets that are fed to the active learning model can be time intensive. Therefore, it is ideal to use computer vision to automate the classification of this image data. This classification can be broken down into two steps. In the …

The rapidly increasing number of drones in the national airspace, including those for recreational and commercial applications, has raised concerns regarding misuse. Autonomous drone detection systems offer a probable solution to overcoming the issue of potential drone misuse, such as drug smuggling, violating people’s privacy, etc. Detecting drones can be difficult, due to similar objects in the sky, such as airplanes and birds. In addition, automated drone detection systems need to be trained with ample amounts of data to provide high accuracy. Real-time detection is also necessary, but this requires highly configured devices such as a graphical processing unit (GPU). …
Identity Term Sampling For Measuring Gender Bias In Training Data, Nasim Sobhani, Sarah Jane Delany
Identity Term Sampling For Measuring Gender Bias In Training Data, Nasim Sobhani, Sarah Jane Delany
Conference Papers
Predictions from machine learning models can reflect biases in the data on which they are trained. Gender bias has been identified in natural language processing systems such as those used for recruitment. The development of approaches to mitigate gender bias in training data typically need to be able to isolate the effect of gender on the output to see the impact of gender. While it is possible to isolate and identify gender for some types of training data, e.g. CVs in recruitment, for most textual corpora there is no obvious gender label. This paper proposes a general approach to measure …

The emergence of e-Commerce imposes a tremendous strain on urban logistics which in turn raises concerns on environmental sustainability if not performed efficiently. While large logistics service providers (LSPs) can perform fulfillment sustainably as they operate extensive logistic networks, last-mile logistics are typically performed by small LSPs who need to form alliances to reduce delivery costs and improve efficiency, and to compete with large players. In this paper, we consider a multi-alliance multi-depot pickup and delivery problem with time windows (MAD-PDPTW) and formulate it as a mixed-integer programming (MIP) model. To cope with large-scale problem instances, we propose a two-stage …

Currently, the most widely used diagnostic tool for COVID-19 is the RT-PCR nasal swab test recommended by the CDC. However, some studies have shown that chest CT scans have the potential to be more accurate and are also capable of detecting the virus in its earlier stages. Unfortunately, CT results are not instantaneously available as it may be days before a radiologist can review the scan. This delay is one of the factors preventing the widespread use of CT scans for COVID detection. To address the delay, this project investigated Convolutional Neural Networks, an advanced form of machine learning used …

It is often the case with new technologies that it is very hard to predict their long-term impacts and as a result, although new technology may be beneficial in the short term, it can still cause problems in the longer term. This is what happened with oil by-products in different areas: the use of plastic as a disposable material did not take into account the hundreds of years necessary for its decomposition and its related long-term environmental damage. Data is said to be the new oil. The message to be conveyed is associated with its intrinsic value. But as in …

Clinical decision support systems have the potential to improve work flows of experts in practice (e.g. therapist's evidence-based rehabilitation assessment). However, the adoption of these systems is challenging, and the gains of these systems have not fully demonstrated yet. In this paper, we identified the needs of therapists to assess patient's functional abilities (e.g. alternative perspectives with quantitative information on patient's exercise motions). As a result, we co-designed and developed an intelligent decision support system that automatically identifies salient features of assessment using reinforcement learning to assess the quality of motion and generate patient-specific analysis. We evaluated this system with …

Many websites remain non-ADA compliant, containing images which lack accompanying textual descriptions. This leaves sight-impaired individuals unable to fully enjoy the rich wonders of the web. To address this inequity, our research aims to create an autonomous system capable of generating semantically accurate descriptions of images. This problem involves two tasks: recognizing an image and linguistically describing it. Our solution uses state-of-the-art deep learning: employing a convolutional neural network that "learns" to understand images and extracts their salient features, and a recurrent neural network that learns to generate structured, coherent sentences. These two networks are merged to create a single …

Abso2luteu-Net: Tissue Oxygenation Calculation Using Photoacoustic Imaging And Convolutional Neural Networks, Kevin Hoffer-Hawlik, Geoffrey P. Luke
ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)
Photoacoustic (PA) imaging uses incident light to generate ultrasound signals within tissues. Using PA imaging to accurately measure hemoglobin concentration and calculate oxygenation (sO2) requires prior tissue knowledge and costly computational methods. However, this thesis shows that machine learning algorithms can accurately and quickly estimate sO2. absO2luteU-Net, a convolutional neural network, was trained on Monte Carlo simulated multispectral PA data and predicted sO2 with higher accuracy compared to simple linear unmixing, suggesting machine learning can solve the fluence estimation problem. This project was funded by the Kaminsky Family Fund and the Neukom Institute.
