X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) at the cadmium L3 and oxygen K edges for CdO thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition method, is interpreted within the real-space multiple scattering formalism, FEFF code. The features in the experimental spectra are well reproduced by calculations for a cluster of about six and ten coordination shells around the absorber for L3 edge of Cd and K edge of O, respectively. The calculated projected electronic density of states is found to be in good agreement with unoccupied electronic states in experimental data and allows to conclude that the orbital character of the …

Zirconia is one of the most promising column packing materials for High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The perfect HPLC support material should be energetically homogenous, have a high surface area on which different chemical species can reversibly attach and be physically and chemically stable over a wide range of pH, temperature and solvent conditions. Most existing supports do not have all of these properties. This project is also focused on a proteomics study. Anatase to rutile transition in an unmodified synthetic titania usually occurs at a temperature range of 600 – 700 °C. Various methods such as addition of metallic and non-metallic dopants and modifying the precursor have previously been reported to influence the anatase to rutile transition temperature. A thin film sensor for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOC) was fabricated by deposition of oligo-aniline grafted tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) onto a glass substrate. The oligo-aniline motifs were conjugated onto the TMV surface by a traditional diazonium coupling reaction to tyrosine residues followed by Cu(I) catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. The modified TMV was easily fabricated into a thin film by directly drop coating onto a glass substrate. Upon integration of the glass substrate into a prototypical device, the virus-based thin film exhibited good sensitivity and selectivity toward ethanol and methanol vapour.

Coatings that demonstrate reduced attachment of crystalline precipitates and the medical device colonising Staphylococcus epidermidis were prepared by the immobilisation of silver doped perfluoropolyether–urethane siloxane thin films on glass substrates. The presence of stratified hydrophobic perfluoropolyether groups protects the coating surface from the attachment of crystalline hydrophilic species such as chlorides and phosphates, whilst silver ion release inhibited attachment of S. epidermidis and subsequent biofilm formation in vitro. The release of silver ions protects the perfluoro groups from the hydrophobic interactions of S. epidermidis cells, which can reduce the hydrophobicity of the protective coating. A microscopic spin model is proposed for the phenomenological Zimm-Bragg model for the helix-coil transition in biopolymers. This model is shown to provide the same thermophysical properties of the original Zimm-Bragg model and it allows a very convenient framework to compute statistical quantities. Physical origins of this spin model are made transparent by an exact mapping into a one-dimensional Ising model with an external field. However, the dependence on temperature of the reduced external field turns out to differ from the standard one-dimensional Ising model and hence it gives rise to different thermophysical properties, despite the exact mapping connecting them. …

The inclusion of zirconium precursors to prepare organosilane solgel coatings improves the corrosion protection performance of the coatings on aluminium and steel. The inherent differences in the hydrolysis rates of the silane and zirconium precursors, various ligands were used to control the hydrolysis by decreasing the number of reactive alkoxide group. Hybrid sols were synthesised using 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propylmethacrylate (MAPTMS) and zirconium n-propoxide chelated with organic ligands including different organic acids, acetyl acetone and 2 2’ bipyridyl. We investigate the possible structural transition of a planar Au10 cluster during its soft landing on a TiO2 (110) surface with or with no oxygen defects. The collision between the gold cluster and the oxide surface is simulated using the Car–Parrinello quantum molecular dynamics method. Both high-speed and low-speed conditions typically implemented in soft-landing experiments are simulated. It is found that under a high-speed condition, the gold cluster Au10 can undergo a sequence of structural transitions after colliding with a defect-free TiO2 (110) surface. When the TiO2 (110) surface possesses oxygen vacancies, however, chemical bonds …

Low-lying icosahedral (Ih) B12-containing structures of B80 are explored, and a number of core–shell isomers are found to have lower energy than the previous predicted B80 fullerene. The structural transformation of boron clusters from tubular structure to core–shell structure may occur at a critical size less than B80.

We present molecular dynamics simulation evidence for a freezing transition from liquid silicon to quasi-twodimensional (quasi-2D) bilayer silicon in a slit nanopore. This new quasi-2D polymorph of silicon exhibits a bilayer hexagonal structure in which the covalent coordination number of every silicon atom is four. Quantum molecular dynamics simulations show that the stand-alone bilayer silicon (without the confinement) is still stable at 400 K. Electronic band-structure calculations suggest that the bilayer hexagonal silicon is a quasi-2D semimetal, similar to a graphene monolayer, but with an indirect zero band gap.

Organic-inorganic polymers formed by hydrolysis/condensation reactions of alkoxide precursors, such as organically modified silanes (Ormosils) have found applications as electronic, optical and protective coatings. Such coatings possess important characteristics such as chemical stability, physical strength and scratch resistance. Further performance improvement is achieved through the incorporation of zirconium and titanium based nanoparticles, also formed through the sol-gel process. However due to the inherent difference in the reactivity of the precursors, the hydrolysis of each precursor must be carried out separately before being combined for final condensation. Silver nanoparticles were synthesised by a chemical reduction process in order to produce an aqueous colloidal dispersion. The resulting colloids were then characterised by a combination of UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy and the nanoparticles were found to have an average diameter of 20–22 nm. The Ag/polymer nanocomposites were then applied to platinum interdigital electrodes as sensor coatings and the capability of the resulting sensor as a humidity detector investigated. The binding interactions between aqueous copper (Cu2þ ) and lithium (Li þ ) ions and Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) multilayers have been investigated by studying surface pressure-area (Π-A) isotherms and surface potential-area (ΔV-A) behavior in order to find the effective dipole moment, μ^, of the calixarene molecules in the uncomplexed and complexed states. The orientation of both calix[4]arenes, namely, 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl- 25,27-diethoxycarbonyl methyleneoxy-26,28-dihydroxycalix[4]arene and 5,17-(9H-fluoren-2-yl)methyleneamino)- 11,23-di-tert-butyl-25,27-diethoxycarbonyl methyleneoxy-26,28-dihydroxycalix[4]arene, is such that the plane of the calix ring is parallel with the plane of the water surface regardless of the ion content of the subphase. Safe and cost-effective experiments were designed for high school students to enhance their laboratory skills and knowledge on polarity and separation of mixtures. Annatto, Spanish paprika and turmeric were extracted yielding red-orange, light red-orange and yellow color, respectively. These were combined with a blue aqueous solution made from food color resulting to green mixtures. These were all extracted with kerosene or oil/kerosene. The non-polar solutes for each mixture combined with the kerosene or oil/kerosene layer, making the polar phase blue again. Students gained a better understanding of the concepts as shown in their laboratory report and test results.
