The f‒elements (lanthanides and actinides) have numerous applications and are critically important to many industries, including the energy, security, and medical industries. One of the barriers to increased use and availability of the f‒elements is the difficulty in separating them from each other due to their similar chemistries. This is especially true of the trivalent f‒elements (lanthanides and minor actinides). Hemimicelles and admicelles are well-investigated wonders in modern science; they are surfactant monolayers and surface adsorbed micelles, respectively. Capacitance measurements for monitoring the formation of dodecyl sulfate (DS) surfactant monolayer on positively charged gold substrates (planar gold) and the adsorbance of 2-naphthol onto DS surfactant monolayer were performed. The investigation of the electrical control of DS at various concentrations (4, 6, 16, and 32 mM) below and above the critical micelle concentration (CMC= 8 mM) on gold surfaces for analyte preconcentration, prior to chromatographic analysis, is presented. MIDA boronates (N-methylimidodiacetic boronic acid esters) serve as an increasingly general platform for building-block-based small molecule construction, largely due to the dramatic and general rate differences with which they are hydrolysed under various basic conditions. Yet the mechanistic underpinnings of these rate differences have remained unclear, hindering efforts to address current limitations of this chemistry. Here we show that there are two distinct mechanisms for this hydrolysis: one is base-mediated and the other neutral. The former can proceed more than three orders of magnitude faster, and involves rate-limiting attack at a MIDA carbonyl carbon by hydroxide. The alternative ‘neutral’ hydrolysis …

A series of silica nanoparticle-based fluorescent chemosensors were synthesized for the sensitive and selective detection of Cu2+ ions in aqueous solution and subsequent CN- ion detection. Silica nanoparticles (SNP) were modified with branching polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers, which function as selective turn-off Cu2+ ion chelators and platforms for the attachment of rhodamine isothiocyanate (RITC) or fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) fluorescent dyes. In the presence of Cu2+ ions, the emission of the fluorescent dye is quenched by Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) and is dependent upon dendrimer generation, pH, fluorescent dye, and surface charge. Researchers at Idaho National Labs have noted unexpectedly high Cd content in empty cladding hulls after processing in the Mark-IV ER. It has been theorized that Cd metal is transporting from the LCC pool through the eutectic LiCl-KCl salt bath to the anode baskets containing the empty hull where it is retained as a Zr-Cd intermetallic. This study sought to replicate the Cd contamination in a dry Ar glovebox using small-scale analogue of the Mark-IV ER salt-Cd metal system.

The title compound, sodium bis­(6-carb­oxy-1-hy­droxy-3-oxo-1,3-dihydro-2,1-benzoxaborol-1-yl)oxidanium, Na+·C16H15B2O13-, was prepared in two steps from 2-bromo-p-xylene. Its crystal structure was determined at 140 K and has triclinic (P) symmetry. The compound presents a unique structural motif, including two units of the cyclic anhydride of boronoterephthalic acid, joined by a protonated, and thereby trivalent, oxonium center. Association in the crystal is realized by complementary hydrogen bonding of the carboxyl groups, as well as by coordination of the sodium cations to the oxygen centers on the five-membered rings.

Nanostructured porous materials generally, and nanoporous noble metals specifically, have received considerable attention due to their superior chemical and physical properties over nanoparticles and bulk counterparts. This dissertation work aims to develop well-established strategies for the preparation of multifunctional nanostructured porous materials based on the combination of inorganic-chemistry, organic-chemistry and electrochemistry. The preparation strategies involved one or more of the following processes: sol-gel synthesis, co-electrodeposition, metal ions reduction, electropolymerization and dealloying or chemical etching. ZnO nanowires are a promising material with great semiconductor properties. ZnO nanowires were prepared by carbothermal reduction and vapor-liquid-solid growth mechanism. Altering a variety of parameters ranging from mole to mole ratio of ZnO to C all the way to gas flow rate was examined. The nanowires were then characterized and their morphology examined under a SEM to observe what effect the parameter had on the morphology of the nanowires. From the experiments and the parameters tested it was observed that in order to produce the highest quality straight nanowires one should use a mole to mole ratio of ZnO …
