Structural, Magnetic, Electrical, Pseudocapacitive, And Electrocatalytic Properties Of Bilayered Ruddlesden-Popper Oxides., Chandana Kananke-Gamage

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ruddlesden Popper (RP) oxides are perovskite-derived functional materials with the general formula An-1Aʹ2BnO3n+1, where A/Aʹ is often a lanthanide or alkaline earth metal, and B is usually a transition metal. These materials contain perovskite-like connectivity, where BO6 units share apexes to form layers that are stacked above each other. The number of layers in each stack is represented by n in the above formula. The spaces between stacks are often occupied by lanthanide or alkaline-earth metals (Aʹ-site metals), which also reside in intra-stack spaces (A-site) between the octahedra. Oxide materials derived from perovskites have been studied for a wide range …

Accurate Quantitation Of Hexavalent Chromium For Reference Standard Certification And Quality Control Testing Using Speciated Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry, James E. Henderson Dec 2020

Accurate Quantitation Of Hexavalent Chromium For Reference Standard Certification And Quality Control Testing Using Speciated Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry, James E. Henderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ability to perform accurate, repeatable, and defensible elemental and molecular speciated analysis is immensely significant for measurements that support human health, environmental science, and industry. This is especially true since trivalent chromium [Cr(III)] is necessary for proper nutrition, while hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is extremely toxic, genotoxic, and carcinogenic. The main challenges associated with speciated analysis are related to reactive species that are continuously transformed or converted to other species during sample processing. Accurate determination of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) species require a method that is capable of monitoring and correcting for interconversion, bias, and instrumental error. Traditional quantitative methods, such …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Heteronuclear Inorganic Complexes For The Photodegradation Of Persistant Organic Pollutants, Matthew A. Moyet Aug 2019

Synthesis And Characterization Of Heteronuclear Inorganic Complexes For The Photodegradation Of Persistant Organic Pollutants, Matthew A. Moyet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this thesis is to investigate the structural modification and characterization potential of common photocatalysts that have various uses for environmental remediation purposes. Pollution involving organic chemicals is one of the most common scenarios found in communities throughout the country. Efforts to rid contaminated drinking water supplies of these chemicals include physical and chemical filters, which have limited ability and efficacy. This lack of efficient filtration services has led to an increased demand for more effective treatment methods. Chemical species that react in the presence of light are known as photocatalysts and have been used in previous studies …

Development Of Bismuth Oxyhalide Photocatalysts For Environmental And Industrial Applications, Robert Arthur May 2019

Development Of Bismuth Oxyhalide Photocatalysts For Environmental And Industrial Applications, Robert Arthur

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heterogeneous semiconductor photocatalysis, of interest for water splitting and environmental remediation applications, uses light to drive reactions. Metal oxide and sulfide semiconductors have been previously studied but have limitations that include large band gap energies and high rates of recombination. Bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX) are an emerging class of photocatalysts with tunable band gaps and low rates of recombination due to their unique crystal structures. Studies of BiOX photocatalytic activity have largely focused on removal of azo dyes from aqueous solutions, with little attention paid to degradation byproducts. Furthermore, these catalysts have not been explored as a means to conduct organic …

Development Of Granulated Adsorbent For Clean-Up Of Water Contaminated By Cesium, Esther Alorkpa May 2019

Development Of Granulated Adsorbent For Clean-Up Of Water Contaminated By Cesium, Esther Alorkpa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study was conducted on sol-gel synthesis of an adsorbent (phosphotungstic acid embedded in silica gel, H-PTA/SiO2) of radioactive cesium. A novelty of this work is covalent bonding of PTA to the surface of solid support that prevents leaching from the surface of the material. The sample was granulated with a binder, aluminium oxide (γ-Al2O3). Solid-state NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy were used to confirm the presence of Keggin units of PTA in the bound materials. Thermal analysis of H-PTA/SiO2 - γ-Al2O3 (50 %) showed that the water content in the …

Steric Effects Of Alkyl Ammonium Salts On The Combustion Of Exchanged Smectite Clays, Celeste A. Keith Jun 2018

Steric Effects Of Alkyl Ammonium Salts On The Combustion Of Exchanged Smectite Clays, Celeste A. Keith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bomb calorimetry was explored as a new method for determining the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of clays. Smectite clays were modified with several alkyl ammonium salts varying in number of carbons and the spatial orientation of the carbons about the central nitrogen atom. The clays used, standards purchased from the Source Clay Repository, have CECs of 44, 80, 88, and 120 meq/100 g. Theoretically, the combustion energy of the organo-clays should be approximately the same for each salt. Any differences in energy would be due to the different structures of the salts and how they are oriented in the interlamellar …

Exploring New Synthetic Strategies By Using Novel Manganese Carboxylate Complexes Along With Two Alkoxide Based Ligands, 2-(Hydroxymethyl)-Pyridine And 4,5-Bis(Hydroxymethyl)-2-Methylpyridin-3-Ol In The Area Of Polynuclear Coordination Chemistry, Michael A. Reagan Jan 2018

Reagan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Manganese carboxylate complexes have been well studied in the past, due to their relevance in bioinorganic chemistry and as well as their behavior as nanoscale magnetic materials that is called single-molecule magnets (SMMs). SMMs are special class of magnetic materials in which magnetism is intrinsic to the molecule. Polynuclear manganese clusters often possess high spin ground states as well as large and negative magnetoanisotropy, a combination which leads to an energy barrier for the reversal of the magnetization direction. The paramagnetic nature of manganese at its common oxidation states with an ample number of unpaired electrons often leads to high-nuclearity …

Controlled Electrochemical Synthesis Of Single One-Dimensional Metal Nanochains Across Microgap Electrodes., Amareshwari Konutham Aug 2017

Controlled Electrochemical Synthesis Of Single One-Dimensional Metal Nanochains Across Microgap Electrodes., Amareshwari Konutham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study mainly focuses on the fabrication of single one dimensional (1D) NP chains across the 5-micron gap of Au two electrode devices (TED). This has been achieved by electrochemical deposition of Ag onto the two electrodes, soaking the TED in 0.1 M Cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide for 2-3 hours, and then close monitoring of the current as a function of time while a voltage across the two Ag coated Au electrodes in air. One dimensional Ag nanoparticle chain formation occurred by oxidation of Ag to Ag+ at the positive electrode followed by movement of Ag+ ions to the …

Homogeneous Ligand-Centered Hydrogen Evolution And Hydrogen Oxidation : Exploiting Redox Non-Innocence To Drive Catalysis., Andrew Z. Haddad May 2017

Homogeneous Ligand-Centered Hydrogen Evolution And Hydrogen Oxidation : Exploiting Redox Non-Innocence To Drive Catalysis., Andrew Z. Haddad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hydrogen is a promising carbon-free fuel / energy carrier and is an essential building block for many industrial and agricultural processes. Rising energy demands have ignited interest in the development of carbon-free and carbon neutral energy sources. In this context, hydrogen is an attractive candidate—being energy-dense, carbon-free—and easily accessible through a two-electron reduction of water. Accordingly, many electrochemical homogeneous catalyst systems have been studied, with a focus on understanding the mechanism of hydrogen evolution proceeding through metal-hydride intermediates. However, there has been a renaissance in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst design, with many groups implicating ligand redox non-innocence as a …

Functionalized Silica Gel For Adsorption Of Cesium From Solution, Kenneth Marshall Seaton Iii May 2017

Functionalized Silica Gel For Adsorption Of Cesium From Solution, Kenneth Marshall Seaton Iii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mesoporous silica gel containing embedded phosphotungstic acid (PTA) was synthesized by sol-gel co-condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate with PTA in acidic media. The obtained material had high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller Theory (BET) surface area and pore volume. A characteristic band of the Keggin structure of PTA was present in its FT-IR spectrum while its X-ray diffraction patterns were absent. This proved the embedding of PTA on a sub-molecular level and not as a second phase. Acidic sites were determined by neutralization with base in aprotic solvent, followed by titration of the remaining base with an acid. The material demonstrated high adsorption capacity of …
