The lipid membrane is the first component necessary to sustain life. To maintain homeostasis, segregate cellular machinery, provide protection from the environment, and reproduce, an organism must establish a boundary in which the processes can occur. Throughout the last two decades, research has propelled our knowledge of lipid membranes much beyond original hypotheses. The fundamental motivations for scaling existing technological platforms down to lab on chip dimensions are applicable in nearly all scientific disciplines. These motivations include decreasing waste, improving throughput, and decreasing time consumption. Analytical tools, such as chromatographic separation devices, can additionally benefit from system miniaturization by utilizing wafer-level fabrication technology, allowing for the rational design and precise control of variables which ultimately affect separation performance. With the use of microfabrication techniques, we have developed an original processing sequence for the fabrication of silicon oxide enclosed pillar arrays integrated within a fluidic channel. Many mixtures important to research consist of hundreds or even thousands of individual components of interest. These types of mixtures are far too complex to separate by a single chromatographic dimension in any reasonable amount of time. However, if a multidimensional approach is used, where a complex mixture is separated by an initial dimension, simpler fractions of that separation are collected and each of those fractions are analyzed individually, highly complex mixtures can be resolved in relatively short amounts of time.
