Statistical Analyses Of Hemp Cannabinoid Test Results, Rachel J. Stegmeier May 2022

Statistical Analyses Of Hemp Cannabinoid Test Results, Rachel J. Stegmeier

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

Cannabis sativa L. is a flowering plant used for recreational and industrial purposes that produces a class of compounds called cannabinoids. Industrial hemp is a strain of Cannabis sativa L. that has been propagated to have a low Δ 9 tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9THC) and a high cannabidiol (CBD) content. With recent advancements in legislation, farms are now growing hemp for fiber, CBD production and other hemp derived product purposes but crops risk being destroyed if THC content levels exceed the current maximum legal limit of 0.3%. For the present study hemp samples were dried, ground, extracted with various alcohols, …

Decrypting Female Attractivity In Garter Snakes, Holly Rucker May 2019

Decrypting Female Attractivity In Garter Snakes, Holly Rucker

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Pheromones are utilized by many species as sexual signals driving mate choice, and pheromone production in vertebrates hinges on sex hormone action. Female red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) produce a skin-based sex pheromone used by males for mate detection and selection. Estradiol is necessary for pheromone production, yet the specific mechanisms within the skin are unknown. Central to this is the metabolism of testosterone to estradiol via the enzyme aromatase. It is hypothesized that female garter snakes synthesize estradiol locally in the skin and maintain pheromone production via tissue-specific regulation of aromatase. Further, I hypothesize that female …

Quantifying The Use Of Chloroform Vapor Exposure To Improve The Adhesion Of Au Thin Films Onto Pmma, Kathleen T. Krist May 2016

Quantifying The Use Of Chloroform Vapor Exposure To Improve The Adhesion Of Au Thin Films Onto Pmma, Kathleen T. Krist

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The metallization of Au onto plastics is an important processing step in applications such as the aerospace and automotive industries, the field of microelectronics, and the fabrication of microfluidic devices. While its corrosion resistance and excellent electrical and thermal conductivity make Au a useful choice, its inertness results in poor adhesion to polymer surfaces. Previous studies have indicated that exposing commercially available poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) sheets to chloroform vapor following Au deposition significantly improves adhesion. In this study, we utilized electron-beam evaporation and magnetron sputtering to deposit Au thin films onto 1.50 mm thick PMMA and exposed the samples to …

Analysis Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus Nutrients In Lake Sediment, Kelsey L. Berrier May 2015

Analysis Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus Nutrients In Lake Sediment, Kelsey L. Berrier

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Analytical methods for the determination of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients (NO3-N, NH4-N and PO4-P) in sediment were studied with the goal of developing extraction steps compatible with analysis by ion chromatography (IC). Research focused on extractant solution composition, Dionex OnGuard® sample pretreatment cartridges for salt removal, and chromatographic resolution. Aqueous test samples, lake sediment samples and spiked lake sediment samples were analyzed. Dionex Ag, Ag/H, and H cartridges were studied for the pretreatment step. Silver (Ag) cartridges were found effective in removing >99% of interfering chloride ion to allow NO3-N determination …
