Theses and Dissertations

The complexation properties of the two isomers of the cyclic polyether dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 are examined in aqueous solution for a series of metal ions at various reaction temperatures. The results are discussed in terms of size relationships and salvation characteristics of both polyether and metal ions. ΔCp° values are determined from the temperature dependence of the ΔH° values. A discussion of the errors involved in the determination of ΔH° from the temperature dependence of log K values is also included. Comparisons are made between the results of this study and those of a similar study by H. K. Frensdorff, E. I. …

Substituted ℓ-Dialkylaminomethyl-3-Phenyl-1-Naphthalenemethanols, Richard Elroy Davis Jan 1971

Substituted ℓ-Dialkylaminomethyl-3-Phenyl-1-Naphthalenemethanols, Richard Elroy Davis

Master's Theses

Malaria is still a world health problem. Established antimalarial drugs have become ineffective in many areas because of the emergence of resistant strains of malaria. New efforts have been initiated to study variations of new untried compounds and earlier structures shown to have activity. The 4-quinolinemethanols fall into the latter class. The great activity of the 4-quinolinemethanols is offset by their phytotoxic activity.

The possibility that substituted o(-dialkylaminomethyl-3-phenyl-1- naphthalenemethanols, as analogs of the 4-quinolinemethanols, would be effective antimalarials, yet not have the phototoxic side effect, is discussed in this paper. Synthetic pathways to the naphthalenemhethanols are discussed. Experimental procedures are …

The Chemistry Of Some Unusual Carbodiimides, Donald Melvin Plautz Jan 1971

The Chemistry Of Some Unusual Carbodiimides, Donald Melvin Plautz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several N1-alkyl-N2-(N,N-dialkylamino)carbodiimides, which were found to form dimeric species, were prepared, and the structure of the dimeric species determined. A study of the reaction chemistry of both the monomeric and dimeric carbodiimides led to the conclusion that dimerization occurred via a (π2s + π2a) ground-state, symmetry-allowed mechanism, and that thermal decomposition of the dimeric species occurred via a (π2s +-π2s) excited-state, symmetry-allowed mechanism. Although dialkylphosphoramidates have been shown to be useful intermediates in the preparation of unsaturated organic nitrogen compounds, N-acyl- and N-imino-dialkylphosphorohydrazidates were found to be too unstable, forming trialkylphosphates upon distillation, to be of …

A Study Of Productivity In Drosophila Immigrans, Lalita Helen Shenoy Waterman Jan 1971

A Study Of Productivity In Drosophila Immigrans, Lalita Helen Shenoy Waterman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In this study it has been demonstrated that Drosophila immigrans females begin laying fertile eggs on the third or fourth day following eclosion, with productivity reaching a peak between the fifth and sixth days of adult life. A delay in mating of even four days decreases the rate as well as the volume of productivity. Based on the evidence in the literature, it is suggested that the stimulus to oviposition may be mechanical or chemical on the corpora allata via the ventral nerve cord.

Fluorescence Lifetimes And Quantum Efficiencies Of Some 1,10-Phenanthrolines, Paul John Tabakian Jan 1971

Fluorescence Lifetimes And Quantum Efficiencies Of Some 1,10-Phenanthrolines, Paul John Tabakian

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Fluorescence properties of fourteen substituted 1,10-Phenanthrolines were determined using two different solvent systems. Hour different sets of experiments were performed in order to measure fluorescence lifetimes, quantum efficiencies, absorption and corrected fluorescence spectra, oscillator strengths, and Stoke’s shifts. Two of the phenanthrolines, the 5-Nitro-1,10-Phenanthroline and the 1,10-Phenanthroline-5,6-Dione, did not fluoresce.

A new equation was developed in order to extract the true fluorescence lifetimes τ from the observed fluorescence output f(t), and the lamp decay function I(t). This equation was [see PDF] where “A” was the weight factor or the normalization constant for the appropriate functions. A test of this equation …

Studies Of The Cleavages And Stabilities Of Carbohydrate Epoxides And Epimines, Curtis Alvin Johnson Jan 1971

Studies Of The Cleavages And Stabilities Of Carbohydrate Epoxides And Epimines, Curtis Alvin Johnson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A novel epoxide ring opening of benzyl 3,4-anhydro-2-benzylox-carbonylamido-2-deoxy-β-D-allopyranoside(I) was affected by phenylboronic anhydride in toluene. One of the products was demonstrated to be benzyl 2-benzyloxycarbonylamido-2-deoxy-4,6-0-phenylboronate-β-D-gulopyranoside. Another product isolated, while not identified, had the properties of an anhydro-sugar different from the starting compound(I). Benzyl 6-0-acetyl-2-benzyloxycarbonylamido-2-deoxy-β-D-allopyranoside(II) also underwent epoxide ring opening in a reaction with phenylboronic acid. An isolated product had the properties of a benzyl 2-benzyloxycarbonyiamido-2-deoxy-D-hexoside different from compounds isolate in the reaction of I with the phenyboronate. This indicated the necessity for an unsubstituted 6-OH group in order for the boron compound to be involved in the ring opening. Supporting …

Palladium(Ii) And Platinum(Ii) Complexes Of 2-Cyanophenyl Diphenylphosphine, David Harrison Payne Jan 1971

Palladium(Ii) And Platinum(Ii) Complexes Of 2-Cyanophenyl Diphenylphosphine, David Harrison Payne

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

There has been no successful chelation of any phosphorus-acetylenic or phosphorous-nitrile ligand. The objectives of this study were to synthesize such ligands and to study their chemistry and chelating tendencies. The best choice appeared to be the preparation of ortho-substituted triphenylphosphines similar to the chelating ligand allylphenyldiphenylphosphine. The Grignard reactions utilized in the preparation of the olefinic compound could not be used in most cases due to the high reactivity of the acetylene and nitrile function Bromobenzene and iodobenzene have been reacted with alkali metal phosphines under conditions that were probably too drastic for the acetylenic and nitrile functions. There …

The Effects Of Indomethacin On A Strain Of Fibroblasts Cultivated In Vitro, John Thomas Mccloskey

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Man has always searched for greater understanding of himself and his environment. As a result, much scientific investigation has been directed towards the understanding of the life process. In recent years, such scientific inquiry has become increasingly focused on the fundamental biochemical events taking place at the cellular, subcellular, and molecular levels. In the course of investigation into the nature of living things, research has often necessitated the development of new techniques and investigational tools to serve as experimental systems. Very often such new methods have made possible the discovery of previously unknown processes. One very interesting and useful investigational …

Bromination Of 1,2-Cyclononadiene And 1,3-Dimethylallene, Edward Benny Samuel Jan 1971

Bromination Of 1,2-Cyclononadiene And 1,3-Dimethylallene, Edward Benny Samuel

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Much information has been obtained on the orientation of unsymmetrical reagents about substituted allenes. Although hydrogen halide addition to 1,2-propadiene yields 2-halopropenes,20,31 it has been ample demonstrated, at least in the case of halogenation and oxymercuration of the 1,2-alkyl substituted allenes, that the attacking electrophile ends up in the product attached to the central carbon of the original allenic system. 20,22,31,34,38,39,40 Using optically active 1,3-dimethylallene(15) it has been shown that the bromination and oxymercuration of 15 is stereospecific. 22,39Knowledge of the absolute configurations of the optically active addition products have made it possible to propose a plausible mechanism …

Some Metal Complexes Of Dihydroxycyclobutenedione, Stewart Michael Condren Jan 1971

Some Metal Complexes Of Dihydroxycyclobutenedione, Stewart Michael Condren

Doctoral Dissertations

"This study involves an investigation of some of the physical and chemical properties of the trivalent metal squarate complexes of iron, vanadium, and indium in order to determine their structure. In this investigation studies were made of the infrared spectra, electronic spectra, x-ray diffraction powder photographs and diffractometer patterns, magnetic susceptibilities, and thermogravimetric patterns for the trihydrate, dihydrate, and anhydrous squarate complexes of vanadium(III) and iron (III) and the dihydrate squarate complex of indium(III). These studies suggest that the structures of the vanadium(III) and iron(III) squarate complexes are dimeric with hydroxyl bridges between the metal atoms. This is supported by …

Metal Salt Catalyzed Carbenoids, Billy W. Peace Jan 1971

Metal Salt Catalyzed Carbenoids, Billy W. Peace

Doctoral Dissertations

"The interaction of diazomalonic esters with olefins in the presence of homogeneous copper(I) and copper(II) catalyst has been examined as a function of olefin structure, solvent media, ionic strength, catalyst structure and catalyst concentration, using partial rate data. It has been possible to determine the fine mechanistic details of the cycloproponation, C-H insertion and "dimer" forming reactions. The initial step is displacement of a ligand from copper by diazo compound in a pre-equilibrium, loss of nitrogen in the rate determining step, return of the ligand, displacement of metal from the carbenoid by olefin, followed by collapse to products. Studies revealed …

The Halogen And Uranium Content Of Sedimentary Rocks, Tektites, Impact Glasses, And Obsidians, Victor J. Becker Jr. Jan 1971

The Halogen And Uranium Content Of Sedimentary Rocks, Tektites, Impact Glasses, And Obsidians, Victor J. Becker Jr.

Masters Theses

"The iodine and uranium concentrations in sedimentary rocks were measured by irradiating the samples in a neutron flux, radiochemically separating iodine, and ß-counting the resulting activity. The values obtained for uranium are in good agreement with previous estimates of the uranium content in sedimentary rocks. The values obtained for iodine define a distribution pattern similar to that reported for chlorine and bromine, in contrast with the distribution pattern previously reported for iodine in sedimentary rocks. The concentrations of chlorine, bromine, iodine and uranium were determined in tektites, obsidians and impact glasses by neutron activation. The uranium content found in tektites …

Mass Fraction And The Isotopic Anomalies Of Xenon And Krypton In Ordinary Chondrites, Edward W. Hennecke Jan 1971

Mass Fraction And The Isotopic Anomalies Of Xenon And Krypton In Ordinary Chondrites, Edward W. Hennecke

Masters Theses

"The abundance and isotopic composition of all noble gases are reported in the Wellman chondrite, and the abundance and isotopic composition of xenon and krypton are reported in the gases released by stepwise heating of the Tell and Scurry chondrites. Major changes in the isotopic composition of xenon result from the presence of radiogenic Xe¹²⁹ and from isotopic mass fractionation. The isotopic composition of trapped krypton in the different temperature fractions of the Tell and Scurry chondrites also shows the effect of isotopic fractionation, and there is a covariance in the isotopic composition of xenon with krypton in the manner …

The Oxidative Decarboxylation Of Aminopolycarboxylic Acids With Cerium (Iv) In Sulfuric Acid, Rita Kathleen Hessley Jan 1971

The Oxidative Decarboxylation Of Aminopolycarboxylic Acids With Cerium (Iv) In Sulfuric Acid, Rita Kathleen Hessley

Masters Theses

"The rates of oxidation of four chelating agents, NTA, EDTA CDTA, and DTPA with Ce(IV), in sulfuric acid media, were determined spectrophotometrically by a stopped-flow technique. The reductive ability is in the order CDTA>EDTA>DTPA>NTA. The influence of varying the acidity of the medium was studied, and in each case a maximum in the rate constant [H +] plot was observed. A possible interpretation of the reactivities and the influence of acidity is advanced"--Summary, page 1.

A Kinetic Study Of The Reductive Abilities Of Four Polyaminocarboxylic Acids (Edta, Cdta, Dtpa And Nta) Towards Cerium(Iv) In Perchloric Acid Media, Salem Ahmed Attiga

Masters Theses

"The reduction of Ce(IV) in HC10₄ solutions by four polyaminocarboxylic acids, which are commonly used as chelating agents, has been studied by the stopped-flow technique. The rates of reduction first increase with increasing acidity, reach maxima which are characteristic of the chelating agent and the medium, then progressively decrease with increasing the acid concentration in the media. At their maximum reactivities, trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane tetraacetic acid (CDTA) shows the highest reductive ability; this is followed by ethylenedinitrilotetraacetic acid (EDTA), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), and finally nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA). The observed maxima can be qualitatively explained in terms of a mechanism which involves unhydrolyzed …
